Marvel Studios may be ramping up Eternals' marketing campaign, but very little has been revealed about the movie thus far. Clearly, there will be a lot of surprises in store for fans, but when a select number of journalists visited the set of the latest Phase 4 adventure in January 2020, producer Nate Moore did share some fresh intel on Angelina Jolie's Thena.

The longtime Marvel Studios producer confirmed that the Eternal suffers from "Mahd Wy'ry," a concept lifted straight from the pages of the comic books that's equivalent to dementia.

"[Thena] has a tragic story in our film in that she comes down with something called Mahd Wy’ry. If you guys are fans of comics, Mahd Wy’ry is something that can beset an Eternal. It's a version of dementia," he explained. "Because of the amount of memories they have, they become unstuck in their own mind, so she starts to forget exactly when she is, so through the course of the movie, Gilgamesh becomes her protector."

"And when we find them in the modern day, they're living off the grid in a cabin in Australia because she's too dangerous to have around humans, so it's a fun arc for Angelina to play."

This is definitely an unexpected twist, but one that gives Jolie a lot to sink her teeth into as Thena. Because of this affliction, chances are the hero will add a uniqueness to the team dynamic, and it sounds like an interesting way to address the age of these characters.

It will also be interesting to see whether any of the other Eternals might be suffering from "Mahd Wy'ry" to some degree and what this means for Thena in the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward.

Eternals is set to be released in theaters on November 5.

That is a really interesting dynamic.

Intrigued to know how other Eternals have coped having lived for thousands of years.

@Carnage1991 - Maybe she's the oldest Eternal on the team. She is similar to an elderly person who has Alzheimer's. I think this is what attracted Angelina.

Haha Feige has the snipers out 24/7 keeping everything under wraps, meanwhile Nate Moore just casually dropping key story points.

I'm not sure if I've just been spoilt on a potentially cool concept for Marvel films? When does a revelation become a spoiler?

Is this important if its so casually revealed? It's probably one piece of many. So long as they don't give the whole kit & caboodle.

@Waddles - Good point. I think it's all part of the world building. All the characters will have a lot of detail painted on to them.

I just wonder if it will be anything substantial? I liked rhodey's disability arc, but felt a little superficial in the avenger films (but given everything going on = makes sense). Maybe they'll really delve into it in Armor Wars. Would love something akin to Winter Soldiers Veteran support group scenes.

Need to check out Nomadland, but Chloe Zhao seems to have really given this film & the MCU in general a lot of thought (akin to the Russo Bros for Avengers), so I'm really looking foward to it.

@Waddles - It's a difficult topic to broach (especially when the people making the content aren't genuine or even close to representative), especially with people with disabilities.

I've seen some content here & there that was pretty interesting: An old show called 'switched at birth' (ABC?) that really highlighted the deaf community. There's a foreign film about deaf youth gangs, I need to find that's apparently incredible. A Quiet Place touches on some of this & is one of my favourite films.

Breaking Bad had a wheel-chair bound recurring supporting character & there's a great french film called The Intouchables, that I really enjoyed about a rich disabled man who gains an appreciation for life through another persons eyes. It also launched Omar Sy to stardom (Bishop in DofP): and speak of the devil, there's also an American remake with Bryan Cranston & Kevin Hart.

I recommend people check out the Paralympics, which got a massive boost after 2012 when London held it to sold out stadiums. Absolutely incredible stories & genuine people: who just wanted to be treated like anyone else, warts & all. Trophies included.

As to Rhodey, I'm at least grateful that his character represents one of 15% of the entire planet's population. Civil War started the conversation & I think Endgame had a scene between him & Nebula remarking to the fact, but I'd like to see more.

I agree 100% with everything you said, also the reason I brought up Veterans who tend to fight for country, but rarely acknowledged for those who lose more, than most can imagine. The Paralympics was born from celebrating athleticism of British veterans who were disabled - & eventually all who are differently abled.

There's a powerful, diametrically opposed story in Rhodey dealing with disability & yet facing armies & wars fought by automated/advanced robotics. Not sure Marvel can pull it off though - there's a fine line between highlighting, interweaving & telling a story about someone disabled & not exploiting that (e.g. Sexuality in Beauty & Beast). They need to allow such characters struggles to feel real. It's especially problematic, imo if the arc isn't fleshed out & given time.

- I feel FatWS tried to deal with this issue of superpowers & Sam remaining normal, but there's a lot more for Don Cheadle to deal with here: ignoring the rather profound racial aspect involving Isaiah Bradley - whose ridiculously relegated to a few words in the cast description on the wiki page. WTF! - hence my hesitance on how effective Marvel will be with all of this.

Sorry about another Essay :D, but felt there was a lot to talk about here. I barely remember my wheelchair bound gran, so not much real experience with disability other than some of the stuff I mentioned above. Must be a difficult transition for you & your family. Do you & they have people to talk to? Sometimes it helps just knowing you're not alone. I hope & wish you & your family well.

@Waddles - Support groups are great. You yourself may wish to get involved with spousal support groups?

I was surprised by the Switched at Birth tv shows emphasis on how important 'deaf community' was & the shared sense of identity. Very deaf positive - which isn't the same as the difficulties your family will or does face - but a very interesting show nonetheless (especially dealing with disability for newbies), if not a little melodramatic: teen drama, love triangles, cheating that sort of stuff. Might be fun for you & the missus/family? Recommend giving it a watch.

@Waddles -

Also - Oh WOW! I just re-watched a few episodes of the show I mentioned, on Dailymotion (its freeform/ABC but not on Disney+ for some weird reason)... & I kind of regret my recommendation xD

It's way more teen drama then I remembered - CW show meets a Telenovela (akin to the O.C.), but with more boy drama! I guess that made the more serious family drama & genuine look into deaf culture more poignant & memorable, but woof. If you can get past the all the drama, it might make a good guilty pleasure watch/insightful look into deaf culture.

Don't hate me if you ever see it. xD

@LeBronStan - think a lot of ot comes down to watching it. I had the same with the TLOU2 leaks. Really wasn't happy with what I read, but when I played it I was blown away by how good it is (once I looked past the things I didn't like)

I think The Eternals may be related to Atlantis. Perhaps Oceanus the Eternal founded the Kingdom of Atlantis. So there are Atlanteans who inherited the blue skin of the Eternal. They are "the children of Oceanus". So there is a race war in Atlantis and Attuma leads the children of Oceanus.

@Repian - I like it. And even if it's not gonna be that, I do think they are gonna tie Atlantis to the Celestials as another race of human(-like) creatures they experimented on

That sounds like a pretty interesting concept to explore. Guess that's yet another reason why this movie is above average long

If they are comfortable in revealing this flaw in the lives the Eternals have lived on so far it is because it won't be necessarily be a game changing spoiler.

Looking forward to see what ends up happening to Thena.
