Eternals may not have received the warmest of responses from critics, but there's still a lot of interest in the divisive Marvel Studios movie. With 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, Chloé Zhao's big budget blockbuster is the only "Rotten" MCU title, but does it deserve to be? We don't think so, and more fans than ever now appear to be tuning into the movie on Disney+ to find out for themselves.
During its first five days on Disney+, Eternals drew a larger audience than Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. According to Samba TV, the movie managed to draw in at least 2 million households during that period, topping the previous Marvel Studios movie's 1.7 million.
This sets a new record, and now makes it the biggest MCU movie debut on Disney's streaming platform.
Eternals was released in theaters last November at a time there was still some uncertainty surrounding the theatrical experience thanks to the pandemic. The movie grossed $402 million at the global box office compared to Shang-Chi's $432 million, but in North America (where these Samba TV figures come from), Eternals made $164 million in comparison to its predecessor's $224 million.
In other words, a lot of people decided not to see the movie on the big screen, so we're not surprised there was so much interest on Disney+, especially when you factor in fans eager for a rewatch. Hopefully, these viewing figures will help ensure an Eternals sequel does eventually become a reality.
