There was a time when Marvel Studios was developing an Inhumans movie, but it appears that was forced upon Kevin Feige and company by Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter and his now-defunct Creative Committee. When the studio gained autonomy, the project fell by the wayside and ended up becoming a Marvel Television/IMAX production.
We had high hopes for the big budget TV series, but it was a complete and utter disaster. Failing to do the characters justice and looking more like a knockoff Syfy movie than a superhero blockbuster, no one was surprised when the plug was pulled on Inhumans after a single season.
Marvel Studios appears to have no plans to revisit the Inhumans, and based on comments from Eternals writers Kaz and Ryan Firpo, they won't even consider shooting in the show's setting of Hawaii!
"In the Marvel Universe there's a lot of synergy, but also individuals telling great stories. There isn't this algorithm that makes Marvel movies great. They hire people who love what they do and let them do what they love. For us, Inhumans was part of that conversation only insofar as — this is a true story — they said, 'You can't go to Hawaii,'" Kaz reveals. "Nobody gets to go to Hawaii because Inhumans totally burned that bridge."
"Beyond that, there wasn’t someone saying like, 'We can’t do this, can’t do that,'" the writer adds. "The door really was open for us."
Ryan added to that point, revealing that Marvel Television already exploring the concept of aliens hiding on Earth never factored into their approach to Eternals. "I didn't know about Inhumans. When we first went in, they were telling us about Eternals. I was like, 'This would be a good TV show.' Later I learned they kind of tried it on TV already. I don't know how much it influenced [the film.] It was just a different era, a different team, a totally different project."
Marvel Television is no more, and Marvel Studios is now in charge of everything we see. Ms. Marvel is moving away from making Kamala Khan an Inhuman (which has proven controversial among some fans), and it's looking like Black Bolt and company won't be making their way into any future stories.
Eternals is now playing in theaters.
