Dragonball Fancast pt.1

To many times have I stumbled upon a Dragonball fancast with a predominately white cast. So I decided to do a more diverse fancast, working my way up from Dragonball to DBZ.

To many times have I stumbled upon a Dragonball fancast with a predominately white cast. So I decided to do a more diverse fancast, working my way up from Dragonball to DBZ.

First off is our young hero Goku I chose...
Brandon Soo Hoo!


You may recognize him from films such as Tropic Thunder as drug lord Tran and GI.Joe as a young Storm Shadow. He's around the right age and is a phenomenal actor considering how old he is. Martial arts wise he is a blackbelt in Tae Kwan Do and is currently practicing extreme martial arts and wing chun kung-fu. He also has training in bo-staff forms...power pole anyone? haha.

Now for an older Goku I chose...
Jon Foo

He's an upcoming martial arts star/actor, you may have seen him in such films as Tom-Yum-Goong,Tekken as Jin Kazama, Street fighter legacy as Ryu, and Batman Begins. To me he is almost a spitting image of Goku and martial arts wise he is WAY more then qualified. He has experience in Karate and Judo (from his father), but began focusing on kung-fu and wushu as he grew older.

I found it hard to find the right actress for Bulma. In the end though I ended up choosing Kat Denninngs. She is a great actress and gorgeous to boot!


For Krillin I found it hard to find a younger actor for the first half of Dragonball, butfor after the time skip I found someone who I think fits the role pretty well. Aljin Abella

He's a fairly decent actor and is the right height for Krillin.

Puar and Oolong I think should be done in CGI and it would be awesome to get the voice actors from the anime to return.

Yamcha was a fairly easy character to cast, I chose Shin Koyamada .

I first saw him in the Last Samurai. He is a 3rd degree blackbelt in Keishinkan karate, a blackbelt in taekwando, and is an accomplished practitioner of Northern fist Shaolin Kung-fu.

For the role of Master Roshi I chose a personal (acting wise)hero of mine, Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa.

He has starred The Last Emperor, Mortal Kombat, Memoirs of a Geisha, Hachiko: A dog's Story, and Tekken.Yes he's a great actor but just as visual aid...give Cary a beard and some red sunglasses...

For Tien I chose Vin Diesel, I mean cmon look at the man he's perfect. And he's a nerd so I feel that he won't let Hollywood botch Dragonball. As for his sidekick Chiaotzu I feel like he should be in CGI.

In my opinion Sammo Hung is a great (realistic)choice for the Ox King.

Jamie Chung should be given a chance to redeem herself for the mess that was Dragonball Evolution.




Piccolo/Kami was actually a pretty easy choice...Samuel L.Jackson

Some CGI and make up and BAM you got yourself Demon Lord Piccolo.

I've always had one person in mind for Piccolo Jr., Djimon Hounsou!

The man has been nominated for two academy awards!and he has that tall and imposing figure that Jr is known for. Fans may recognize him from Gladiator, Tomb Raider, and Blood Diamond.

For Bulma's dad Dr.Briefs only one person came to mind, Christopher Lloyd.

Lloyd is no stranger from playing weird, eccentric, scientists.

The Saiyan Saga

I've never seen Donnie Yen in a villainous role so I think playing a character like Raditz would be refreshing for him.

Films you might have seen him in include, IP man 1 and 2, Iron Monkey, Dragon Tiger Gate, and Hero.

While researching the right actor Nappa I came across one Bill Goldberg

I mean look at him, do I even need to explain this choice?

I chose Rain to play Vegeta, he proved that he could kick some ass in Ninja Assassin and has proven himself as an actor in the various dramas and movies he has starred in.


And just because I can't help myself...

Dave Batista as Brolly XD

I will be casting characters from later arcs in a couple more articles, soo take a look and leave a comment below :D

Very cool. Personally I think that all the Saiyans should be white because they are aliens but all the other characters should be Asian. Solid cast tho.

@SUPERBATSPIDERMAN- I don't think they should be default white just because their aliens. Goku was just an asian kid with a tail until dragonball z.

Plus when you think about it in Dragonball Goku basically came from the asian influenced part of his world. Yes there isnt any of our countries in the dragonball world, but there were races (Caucasian, African, Asian, etc).

I have always seen Goku and Vegeta as white and maybe Yamcha. I would cast Jared Padalecki as Goku because he can get big and ripped like Goku, and Ben Foster as Vegeta. He can do the angry and Badass. Jackie Chan should be Master Roshi.

@HailToTheKingBaby- drawn white?, I hate it when people say that.Okay show me white guys named Roshi and Gohan, or goku for that matter. People argue that Goku's eyes are to big to be asian...show me a white guy with eye's that big...anyone with eyes that big.
Goku is the Japanese name for the Monkey King...a Chinese figure, Goku is based on the M.King.plus he's an alien what makes him white?, by that logic an Asian guy can play Goku. And we all know that people would lose their shit over that. BUT superman is default white and it would be weird to portray him as anything else. Goku is the Asian superman, do you really think a Japanese guy put a white guy as the main character of his comic that was based on the Journey to the west?

Truthfally though white actors get more chances for roles then minority actors. It's sad but true,even when it's a distinctivly minority role. For instance Hollywood is making a movie based on the novel All you need is kill, the main character is Japanese. The director said in the interview that he isn;t going to cast an Asian actor for the role he's going straight for a white actor. Changing his name from Keiji Kiriya to Billy Cage?,cmon.OH and Bane in the Dark Knight Rises, in the comics he's hispanic, so who does hollywood cast as him? flipping Tom Hardy. The 47 ronin starring Keanu Reeves?? with the actually Japanese people in the background?. Hollywood's reasoning is that an audience can't connect with an Asian actor,so things like white washing happens. Minority actors always get robbed of roles, most casting calls ask for white actors with minority actors as a side note, prime example Akira.

Totally agree with KamenRider. I'm not saying you guys are being racist but since when is it normal for a white guy to walk around in karate gis with Japanese symbols on them and eat his food with chopsticks from a bowl. Its getting kind of annoying to see Asian actors overlooked for characters that are originally written to have Asian backgrounds. Just like with Akira. If you're gonna make an Akira movie Takeda better be Japanese and it better take place in Neo-Tokyo.

@MrGrayson- Thanks for the support :D,the stuff happening with Akira is insane, neo-manhattan?, changing Takeda and co into people of Caucasian descent?, and the production co. is courting only white actors for the main roles. Hollywood always says theres no bankable Asian actors in these situations (dragonball,avatar,etc), well that's not surprising when all our roles are being given to Caucasian actors because their more "mainstream"

I love the cast for an all Asian Cast but I'm with most as far as casting Whites as Saiyans.

I personally would cast all the Saiyans to look Mediterranean.

The Asian cast would be;
Krillin
Yamcha
Chi Chi
Master Roshi
Grandpa Gohan
Maybe Tien
Maybe Gohan (preferably Caucasian & Asian mixed)
Maybe Yajirobe

The Caucasian Cast would be;
All Saiyans (I would prefer Multi-ethnic actors)
Bulma and her Family
Maybe Tien
Maybe Gohan (preferably Caucasian & Asian mixed)
King Kai
Maybe Yajirobe

It's funny that you point out Dean Cain because since he is of Mixed Ethnicity I thought he was perfect for Superman and I always thought a light latino, Mediterranean, or mixed Caucasian/Asian actor make for the best Superman.

I also feel mixed ethnicity would make for a good Namor as well.

Batista as Broly? No. I can live with Goldberg as Nappa, but Broly's supposed to dwarf HIM. I'd go with Nathan Jones.

Yajirobe should be Asain, btw. The name alone is pretty much a deal sealer on that.
