The CBM debacle

The CBM debacle

Let's think the unthinkable, let's do the undoable, let's prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.

Dear CBM community,

Tension and infighting on this website, as of late, has turned me from a devout and loyal contributor into a casual member. Today on comicbookmovie.com there are so many disputes, many of which stem from content being posted which isn't comic book or comic book movie related. I, personally, am not just sick of seeing news about movies which have absolutely no comic link but just outright have no relevance to the website. And not just have they been written but I've seen these article posted on the main page. A spot once reserved for pressing, hard hitting news or for mammoth efforts in fan fic or even brilliant editorial pieces. But now it seems our plethora of over enthusiastic editors just love seeing their names on the main page so much that they will post just about anything.

So some things I feel need clearer definitions for both users and editors when it comes to posting articles:

Comic Book Movie: is a movie that is either an adaption or loose translation of an already existing comic book or comic book character.

Movie Comic Book: is a comic based on an existing movie that due to marketing or popularity of story and/or characters has had a comic book produced.

Superhero movie: a movie that uses comic book superhero lore to create a wholly new character that personifies characters that exist in comics or comic book movies.

To me these are the only topics that should be covered on this site. At least generally. Notable exceptions of course would be: CBM directors/producers new projects, television shows based on comics or with tie-in comics, comicbookmovie.com related articles, fan fic, polls, and even loose connections between actors portraying a character in a film that is similar to a comic book character they played. I can handle all of these things and considering what this site is and what it's designed for you would think these would be the only types of article we see. But I have seen articles that flat out have no connection to comics and have clearly just been written for the sake of new content. I miss the days where only a handful of articles would be written each day but each article would be so good that the comments thread would be massive and spark real debate between users.

It would really sadden me to see this website lose integrity and quality because of a mentality to try and make the site like a tabloid newspaper. This will only serve to alienate and anger the loyalists and as we've seen from the comic book movies of late when the loyal fans are given what they want and the CBM stays true to what it should be it thrives. We're always complaining that FOX, Sony and Warner Bros should take note of this and create things that the fans will love and not just produce crap for the sake of money, well shouldn't we ask this of ourselves? I believe that quality and relevance should be valued higher over the quantity of articles. We have our fan base, let's give them content they can respect and be proud of.

And if you have news that is brilliant and that fanboys will love but isn’t CBM related…then post it on Earths Mightiest. That’s what that site’s there for.

Sincerely,

Benjamin Boekelaar

I enjoy having things not related to comicbook movies posted, it'd be really boring if it were just CBM news all day every day. I would go to Earth's Mightest more often, but the comment sections seem very quiet. I see this site as being more about nerdy things than just comics in particular, and I am completely fine with that, and boobs, it's not CBM without boobs. ;P

there are always going to be people who want only Comic Book Movie related content on this site only. Me and a few others do comic book reviews and they don't get taken down since they are "comic" related. If people want to get news for video games, theres plenty of sites dedicated to that. Comic book movie is a great sight that filters out the other stuff CBR posts and gives them in a much fresher, easy to read format

I didn't realise it was all that bad.

In fact, sometimes this site seems so quiet with news that there is always the risk of something not specifically CBM related will get a look in.

This is a stupid article. I will tell you why I think this. Galactus(Jim) co-owns and co-created this website. He gets to decide what is allowed on this site. This site wouldn't exist with out him. If he thinks an article isn't appropiate for this website, he would delete the article. You have to remember ComicBookMovie is just the title of this website. I would have to agree with Dane when I say this website is more about nerdy things. I mean, video games, popular action movies, and comic book news all get posted here frequently non of which are CBM's. Apparently, Galactus thinks it's appropiate for this site.

@Boekelaar: get over it dude. For the most part, everything on this site is related to movies based on comics. However, I don't mind seeing news about let's say a new James Bond movie or The Terminator and RoboCop, because these franchises have a following equivalent to any comic book character. Sorry, but your in the minority here.

I think you're slightly missing the point, I don't have a major issue with non related materials. But for instance when rors article about the title of Tarantinos new film gets put on main you have to wonder why that is. I'm not asking for a major overhaul but news that isn't CBM related should probably stay in the other sections. That in the least is what I think should happen, the site wasn't that flexible on content a year ago and people (who I no longer see commenting weirdly) would be outraged by all this non-cbm stuff being posted.

And it's not that stupid, Galactus also gets money from this website and the more people who visit the better for him. I'd hate to question his integrity but he probably isn't that worried what gets posted as long as the traffic is good. It's therefore up to our editors to monitor and decide which content is good for the site and at the moment it's pretty much whatever they can get their names on. I think a new method should be devised for the delivery of non-CBM related news to be delivered to the fanboys. Perhaps a whole new tab, because whether you think the websites name is immaterial or not this site is dedicated to CBMs and in the least the main page should only feature comic book movie related content.

Galactus has gone over this point many many times. This site is called Comic Book Movie, but its really open to any interests that might gain the attention of fans.

The best example can think of is comic conventions. Go to a comic book convention. There are tons of non-comic related things there, simply because many comic fans are also into video games, animation, tv shows, and movies.

Why limit your site to one type of fan when you can have one stop shopping for a whole lot more people? Its actually smart.

So my advice, is if you don't like an article thats posted...don't read it. Its that simple. In fact, its a whole lot easier NOT to click on the article, than it is to click it and get mad.

I see your point. I find it a little bit annoying when something like Cars 2 makes the main page (which hasn't been much of a proble recently) and people use excuses like "There was a comic made based on this movie." Yeah, and there are comics based on Glee too. Doesn't mean that should be on the main page of this site. However, covering stuff like Harry Potter, LOTR, MIB and other franchises that fit with the tastes of a decent amount of this website's membership is reasonable.

Think of it this way, Jiffy Lube doesn't just lube up your car right? They add windshield wiper fluid, clean your windows, check your A/C and rotate your tires.

Just because the title is ComicBookMovie doesn't mean that it has to be strictly comics.

Ever been to a comic con? You see a ton of shit that isn't comic book related. That's because the majority that are into comics are also into, games, anime, or whatever. It's a business man.

The easiest thing to do, is make your own fansite and filter what news is put on your page.

I kind of agree with this actually, but instead of keeping the content of this website strictly comic book movie-related, perhaps the name and the premise of the website could be changed to incorporate all things "nerd-related".
