Doctor Who Movie Fancast: Part 1/3 - Cast & Crew

With 10 days to go until Matt Smith departs the show, this will be the first part in a trilogy of articles where I'll be going over who I'd like to be in front and behind the camera for a Doctor Who film. Let's begin...

For those who aren't familiar with this show; Google it and watch a few episodes as one story can't justify how great it is unless you see "Blink". For those of you who are; this is going to be a three part article with this part being centred around cast and crew, the second being around story and plot points, and the third being where I'd like the franchise to go and anything that sticks out to me.

Breif Synopsis: Molly's life as a car salesman pays for the food, and bills; but with all the good and fortune in her life, one thing it doesn't cover is the gap in her life that she feels will never be fullfilled. On an average rainy day, a mysterious man who goes by "the Doctor" starts snooping around the show room looking for "Cybermats". What Molly didn't know was from that moment onwards, her life was going to take a total 180.

The Doctor:

James McAvoy - "Hello, there! I'm the Doctor"

Anyone who's seen X-Men: First Class will know that McAvoy can achieve a range of emotions and characteristics while mashing them into one consistent character. From fun playboy to teacher to father figure and that screams the Doctor to me. He's an adventurer who will hear about an erupting volcano and want to run into it and help all the innocents who could be killed. His relationship with Magneto in FC really screams the love-hate relationship between the Master and the Doctor to me. Typing it right now makes me smile with what could happen if this became a reality. I genuinely think that James would be the perfect choice to kick start what could be a brand new franchise.

Alternate Choice 1:

Richard Armitage - "Hi, I'm the Doctor."

One thing that really annoyed and stopped me from watching Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. was the lack of diversity between the main cast. All of them are attractive, all of them have nice hair, and not one of them sticks out in my mind as a complex character. Simple characters can also be great if there's a wonderful actor or actress to back it up, but the characters and actors (apart from Clark Gregg) are so forgettable that continuing to watch the show after two episodes was no longer a possibility for me because of the been-there-done-that attitude I had. Although Armitage is a great looking guy, he actually has eyes that can give you commands and a rich voice that will give you orders. This is a bit of a darker choice and I haven't seen much of Richard's work, but from what I have seen, I can picture a Christopher Eccleston kind of vibe with him. Just mess his hair up, give him great lines and we have the Doctor for the silver screen.

Alternate Choice 2:

Unknown - "Hello, I'm the Doctor"

Matt Smith was relatively unknown and turned out a success, so when it comes to casting decisions, getting an unknown actor can help not restrain them to a certain role in the past.

Molly:

Emily Blunt - "Hiya, sir. How can I help?"

If you ask any Whovian one of the traits of being a companion, they will no doubt come to the word 'feisty' and Emily Blunt is just that. Blunt is a great actress and after watching the Adjustment Bureau, she pulls off genuine chemistry very well, and I'm picturing her and McAvoy bantering in and out of the TARDIS and I can see a brilliant friendhsip.

Alternate Choice:

Emma Watson - "No, sir. We're not that kind of show room."

I don't have a lot to say on this one, but Watson is a great character actress and I think she'd pull it off.

The Master:

Orlando Bloom - "Trust me. I AM the Master."

(The Master doesn't actually appear in the first story but I thought I'd show who I want because he's pretty vital) Before anybody turns around and slaps me for the Three Musketeers in 2011 or not picking Benedict Cumberbatch; I once again have faith and can see the potential if this was to form in the real world of entertainment. I didn't even consider typing Benedict Cumberbatch's name because although he is one of Britain's modern treasures, he's way too obvious. Orlando and James can have a love-hate relationship that would work just as well with Benedict, but Sherlock is just too much of a no-brainer that it would come as no surprise to anyone. Doctor Who is all about creativity.

Director: Gore Verbinski

Verbinski captures a sense of quest and adventure that is a key element if you're in a box that can travel anywhere in all of space and time. Gore also seems to handle characters well and balances them out so that the final product you have is not a team movie, but a group one.

Cinematographer: Roger Deakins

The man has worked on The Shawshank Redemption, A Beautiful Mind, Skyfall just to name a few and with Deakins' style, you have great images that are never to flashy or cocky, but the right balance between under and overwhelming where it comes across as plain and simple confidence.

Writers: Neal Purvis, John Logan, Simon Nye

The first two names belong to the writers who worked on Skyfall, and the third name belongs to the man who wrote one of if not the best Matt Smith DW episode, Amy's Choice. Neal Purvis, and John Logan gave Skyfall themes about quitting while you're ahead, the online world, and enough questioning old fashioned espionage, that the film carefully answered the relevance of the 50 year long franchise itself. Simon Nye was able to fit in in so many questions and dark topics about the Doctor in a 45 minute runtime, that I was starting to wonder if he should be show runner. I really hope these three collaborate as they've all taken part in franchises with big legacies.

So those are my ideas for the cast and crew of a Doctor Who film. List your thoughts down below as they're always appreciated. Thanks for reading, cheers...
