Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

TRANSCENDENCE - directed by Wally Pfister, from a screenplay written by Jack Paglen. Christopher Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas are Executive Producers. The cast includes: Johnny Depp Paul Bettany, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy, Clifton Collins, Jr., and Morgan Freeman. In theaters and IMAX on April 18.

Wow. Why has no one ever thought to have Morgan Freeman narrate stuff before? He's quite good at it.

Loved the first trailer with Depp narrating, but this trailer is what has really sold me on the movie. This was like an intro to a Through the Wormhole episode.

Between this and Interstaller, I love that Nolan is going a more sci-fi route.

I have a feeling that this film with popularize the subject enough to warrant a Ghost In The Shell live action movie. Not that GITS isn't awesome enough to do it on its own, but this film, if successful, will surly set the tone. Only sad part is Depp is the lead. I don't dig Depp.

You know, this goes back to that discussion about Shia's plagiarism and the distinction between using a theme/genre and literally stealing a script and putting your name on it.

Here is a movie about Artificial Intelligence.

Not an original premise for films, but it could be original in it's storytelling an execution.

TheIronStomach's very own list proves that (even though he intended it as a rebuke of this film), because none of the films he listed are identical in their approach to a story involving an AI. They're all different from one another.

Terminator isn't Wargames. The Matrix isn't 2001.

These creators took an old sci-fi theme and gave it their own twist. Made it unique and original. That's actually cool, especially when it works. That's what you strive for as a creator.

Now what Shia did was none of that.
He took an old script, erased the characters names, wrote in his own and starting shooting the storyboards for that script. That's what you avoid as a creator. That's being lazy. Being a leech. That's stealing.

That's the difference right there.
A point that fell on deaf ears with the Shia-apologists.
