Zack Snyder Says He "Tried Like Crazy" To Keep Superman's Classic Look For MAN OF STEEL

Some fans were annoyed with the changes made to the character's costume for Snyder's upcoming reboot - particularly in the red underwear area! Now in another excerpt from his interview with NYP, the director reveals that he actually wanted the classic outfit himself at first..

It seems Zack Snyder originally wanted the same thing a lot of fans do - to see Superman wearing his red trunks on the outside of his costume. It's deemed a bit silly by some these days, but it is has been a part of the character's iconic look for a very long time, and although the new outfit sported by Henry Cavill for the movie has mostly been met with fan approval, many purists were up in arms that this latest incarnation of Superman has finally learned that underwear is supposed to be worn UNDER the pants. In the following excerpt from his interview with The New York Post, Snyder reveals that he fought to keep the classic look, but suggests that he might have been overruled by certain other parties..

"The costume was a big deal for me, and we played around for a long time. I tried like crazy to keep the red briefs on him. Everyone else said, ‘You can't have the briefs on him.' I looked at probably 1,500 versions of the costumes with the briefs on. If you look at the costume, it's very modern, but the relationship to the original costume is strong."

Henry Cavill adds - "You come onto a project like this, and you hear about modernization and you hear about bringing things forward to today, and all you can do is hope that it's going to look cool and different from anything you've seen before." Personally I like the new look a lot, but what about you guys? Still missing the red briefs?

Glad it's the way it is. I wish he did have a bit of red on the belt though, instead of just that gold buckle.

Just a heads up Ror, the last part, the:

"You come onto a project like this, and you hear about modernization and you hear about bringing things forward to today, and all you can do is hope that it's going to look cool and different from anything you've seen before."

Is Cavill's quote, not Snyders. The article says after the quote: Cavill says of the suit.

I actually thought he had the red trunks in that very first promo pic that came out... I actually think that they would've worked in a Snyder film.

The new suit is cool. The old one would be too silly.

Eitherway both looks good (classic or movie version) and if this will make Supes received seriously and sincerely by the new generations and new audience to acknowledge who he is and what he meant in the history of comic book, then it is fine by miles :)

Good thing they left the boxers off, look at The Reeve and Routh suits, they looked terrible, I'm surprised they kept them so long in the comics

I'm glad that they ditched the briefs. They look fine in comics, animation, etc., but they don't really work in live action IMO. The new suit looks excellent.

Far and away the best Superman costume on film or tv to date! This movie is going to be badass.

Come on! IT IS NOT UNDERWEAR!!! Underwear goes UNDER the suit. The red trunks are there to balance the colors. How hard is it to understand! My god you people... Underwear.. geez give me a break. I'm rarely vocal on this site but this thing about the suit, it drives me insane. Am I the only freakin' one to undertand this? Really?!I'll miss the classic look for sure but it won't prevent me from enjoying MOS. Most anticipated movie of 2013.

GordonShumway , thanks..didn't realize as I picked up the story from io9 and they ran it all as one quote. I'll change it now.

I think the suit looks cool.

Although, from seeing some set pics it seems like someone wanted to emphasize a bulge or Henry is just packin.

I'm sure they'll make a good parody porno with this.

Ok.. I think I need boobs now. That was too much talk about junk for me.

The suits cool but maybe they couldve had a red belt or something to go around the waist just to balance out the colors.

i was against it at first, but love what they have come up with for the movie. it looks awesome. The red trunks did help draw attention away from the groin area though, will be interesting to see if a superman in a blue one-zie won't look too 'naked'!

Quite right, it is not & never was underwear. Originally I believe superhero costumes were supposed to evoke circus performers, acrobats, strong men etc.
I'm looking forward to seeing some of the rejected designs with the trunks at some point.

I don't hate the new look but...I'd take the original anyday. I've always seen the suit, everybit of it, as iconic, timeless, and perfect. Thats how I see Superman himself. If the cosmetic changes are just a byproduct of a half-assed and poorly executed reimagining/relaunch like the comics, then I want no part of it.

SuperSomething616 - 11/26/2012, 7:38 AM
Sans red trunks was defo the way forward...and Im one of the purists...however the yellow areas where the belt should be are not prominent enough so it looks like a onesie...

Make the belt more solid and it would have worked perfectly...though still looks good enough and will likely look better in action...

BobGarlen - 11/26/2012, 7:41 AM
Just change those weird silver lines on his hip around his "belt" and legs to red, and we have a fine suit. The suit is just way too bland. It lacks color, it lacks a type "Pop-out" factor. The red is needed in that area to introduce more color.

Goyer

David S. Goyer is a HACK!

While people are worried about the trunks/underwear, those are just the beginning of our problems. The biggest problem lays with the screenplay. It was written by a guy with so much disdain for Superman that he had him renounce his American citizenship in his nine page contribution to a 96 page book back in Action Comics #900.

Superman

I guess we don't need "The never ending battle for truth, justice, and the American way" either.

The guy sucks at directing, producing, and writing; and, he has a few hits and a GIANT LOAD resume full of misses. This hack knows nothing about the heroes he writes, nothing at all, or what makes them special.

Forget the trunks, reboot the script.

Because you can have a flowing red cape, a gigantic "S" on your chest, and blue spandex, but red below the waste is just silly, right?

This discussion makes me think of the old 'Stupor-Man' parodies from the sixties. That guy's costume had red boxers on the outside. Just the look of him was enough to crack me up. Probably why I started smoking crack.

NO! I keed, I keed!

They were trunks not underware! s someone else said. The new suit is not bad, but it does need some redin the middle to balance it out. That being said MOS FTW! I just feel they are putting a lot of effort to make this a great CBM.
BruceWayneNewton
BruceWayneNewton - 11/26/2012, 7:58 AM
Just because the costume has been that way for a long time doesn't make it better...

I think everybody will be pleased when they see a Superman movie with action and will not even notice a missing red speedo

"...this latest incarnation of Superman has finally learned that underwear is supposed to be worn UNDER the pants." Haha.

I still and will always miss the red briefs - in the context of the classic costume as a whole - but at least this new costume isn't bad at all. I understand that redesigning Superman is difficult, but it will just happen in days full of modernizations like these, and I'm glad with what they came up with. It's that rare Superman redesign that actually works.

@TheBigBoss917

When David S. Goyer goes back to writing rubbish (see: KickBoxer 2, Demonic toys, Ghost Rider 2, etc) and leaves comic properties that I like alone (see: Batman and Superman). I'll stop.

He leaves a taint of failure with everything that he does.

Obviously Superman doesn't see them as underwear! But that's just the joke associated with that look.
