BOX OFFICE: FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot Expected To Debut At #1; Will It Top ANT-MAN?

There's a lot of negative buzz surrounding Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot, but will that negatively impact its chances at the box office this weekend? Early tracking indicates that the movie is going to open at #1, so perhaps not! Hit the jump for further details...

According to Deadline, Fantastic Four is likely to take the #1 spot at the North American box office this weekend. With Shaun the Sheep its only real competition and Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation expected to drop around 50%, the Josh Trank helmed reboot is taking aim at a $40 million - $50 million debut. The trade adds that Fantastic Four is currently tracking better than Ant-Man across all demoes apart from older males and females. How that will translate when it comes to ticket sales is hard to say, and its success will likely depend on the first wave of reviews - which are expected online tomorrow - and that always all important word of mouth/CinemaScore.

Regardless, this news no doubt comes as something of a surprise. Of course, with tracking and early estimates so often being incorrect, it might be too soon at this point to declare Fantastic Four a hit! We'll have a better idea on Thursday evening when the reboot opens in North America anyway. How do you think the movie is going to end up performing this weekend? Sound off below...

I don't put too much faith into Box Officie analysts, their track record isn't the strongest.
But we shall see. It's a shame people on here can't keep an open mind and won't even give it a shot, sigh.

I actually hope it does well in the box office. My thinking is, what's the point in hoping it bombs?

I know that there are quite a few out there that hope the film bombs and are under the impression that if it does, then the rights will go back to Marvel/Disney. Well, the FF aren't like Daredevil, so there's a pretty good chance that Fox will hold on to this property regardless of how this weekend turns out. They'll wait a few years, recast, reboot and try again. That being said, why bother to go through all that?

Of course it would track better with the younger demos. The bullshit sensing part of their brains is still developing.

@joshwilding

How come you were so positive with your Ant-Man reporting (citing heavy competition, it's "modest" budget of $130 mil + $100 mil for marketing, etc.), but for this you are so negative (the word negative is literally in the teaser twice, this is a surprise, not a hit, etc.)?

I know the answer, I'm just curious if you'll actually address it.

@staypuffed sees it today. No idea when though but looking forward to his reaction.

The only other person I know is @MrSotoMan but I'm positive he saw a very early cut.

Well I guess those box office analysts haven't seen the comments from the General Audience they also don't care about the new Fantastic Four movie.

Will it top Ant Man. Ant Man is the second lowest grossing Marvel Studios movie and it couldn't use the TIH excuse of not having the privilege of riding the wave of several popular high grossing Marvel movies. I predicted that Ant Man wouldn't gross over $300 mil domestically and was right. I predict that F4 will gross at least $600 mil worldwide.

Dear Lord, at this point I'm looking forward to there not being any more stories on Fantastic four... wait, I'm sorry. On Fant4stic.

My prediction is still south of $25 mil. Between 12 and 18, probably. After France's reaction, we'll have a better idea, but man, it's not looking good.

Well despite being well received, Chronicle did only a little over $100 mill, and considering the negativity......idk lol

Overseas totals will probably be higher than domestic, but even that can only do so much..........
If it does well we get:

FF 2
FF/X MEN CROSSOVER
Possible Galactus and Silver Surfer rebirth

If it sucks

Sequel is cancelled and like Sony, Fox scrambles for new ideas, and FF is put on backburner.

Fox sells FF to Marvel in 5-10 years

I'm just speculating lol
