Reports are coming in that Reg Cathey, best known for his role as Freddy on House of Cards, has died aged 59.

Cathey's friend and collaborator David Simon, creator of HBO drama The Wire and miniseries The Corner, broke the sad news in a Tweet earlier tonight:

Cathey, who also appeared in the likes of The Wire, Oz, and the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot as Dr. Franklin Storm, won an Emmy for outstanding guest actor in a drama series in 2015 for his work on House of Cards.

The much-loved actor is said to have passed away at his home in New York, surrounded by friends and family.

@NinnesMBC - he was my choice for the voice of darkseide when he inevitably showed up down the line in the DCEU. He had a extremely strong voice and it’s a shame he wasn’t in more things.

@warmachinerocks - I worked in downtown LA. And I was waiting for the bus and this guy just parked next to me and said if I needed a ride.

@TheIlluminati - Did you know who he was at the time? Did you ask him anything about his career as an actor?

As much as I hated Fan4stic, I definitely thought he was the best part of the movie.

geez. this guy was always one of those actors that goes unnoticed, even though they’re immensely talented. hopefully with his untimely passing, people will finally begin to explore his body of work and respect what he brought to his craft. RIP.
