Cate Blanchett, Ken Stott, Sylvester McCoy and Mikael Persbrandt and have joined the cast of Peter Jackson’s highly anticipated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic "The Hobbit." Also joining them are Ryan Gage, Jed Brophy and William Kircher.

Jackson, who directed all three "Lord of the Rings" films, will helm the two films back-to-back, telling the story of "The Hobbit" in two parts from a screenplay by Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro.

Cate Blanchett ("Lord of The Rings" trilogy, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") will reprise her role from "Lord of The Rings" trilogy as Galadriel, the Lady of Lothlorien. Ken Stott ("Charlie Wilson’s War", TV’s "Rebus") will play the Dwarf Lord Balin, Sylvester McCoy (TV’s "Doctor Who") will play the wizard Radagast the Brown and well-known Swedish actor, Mikael Persbrandt ("Everlasting Moments", "Day and Night") will play the shape-shifter Beorn. British actor Ryan Gage ("Outlaw", TV’s "Doctors") will play Drogo Baggins, with New Zealand actors Jed Brophy ("Lord of The Rings" trilogy, "District 9") playing the role of the dwarf Nori, and William Kircher ("Out of the Blue"; TV’s "Legend of the Seeker") rounding out the company of Thorin Oakensheild in role of the dwarf Bifur.

Peter Jackson welcomed the news of Cate Blanchett’s return to Middle-earth "Cate is one of my favorite actors to work with and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have her reprise the role she so beautifully brought to life in the earlier films" On the casting of Scottish actor Ken Stott, Jackson commented "Fran and I have long been fans of Ken’s work and are excited he will be joining us on this journey." Jackson also welcomed the addition to the cast of Swedish actor, Mikael Persbrandt "The role of Beorn is an iconic one and Mikael was our first choice for the part. Since seeing him read for the role we can’t imagine anyone else playing this character."

These actors will join Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Aidan Turner, Rob Kazinsky, Graham McTavish, John Callen, Stephen Hunter, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Adam Brown, and James Nesbitt. The Hobbit is set to be released in 3D in December 2012 and December 2013.

now we're just waiting on McKellen and Mortenson's confirmations, cant wait. Im interested to see this take already because it already includes more characters from the LOTR than the Hobbit.

@ckal Tom Bombadil was never in the Hobbit although he should have been in the extended of the fellowship. Jackson claims that T Bombadil doesn't "have a significant role in the war of the ring and Frodo's journey to murder". I for one call that horse shit! Tom Bombadil is the greatest tolkein character there is, nuff said =D

Ya im really pumped for this, im just glad pretty much everyone important is back. Cant wait to see Andy Serkis doing Goluum's riddles in the dark. How are the 2 movies being set up, is it two movies telling the Hobbit's story (kinda like with harry potter n the deathly hallows) or is it the first movie is strictly the Hobbit and the other tells the events that take place during the 60 years between the Hobbit and the fellowship. I remember hearing rumors of both so idk how its gonna play out. anyone know?

WTF is Galadriel doing in the Hobbit? She has NOTHING to do with that story! It looks to me like they're just finding ways to squeeze in a bunch of popular characters from LOTR to find ridiculous ways to pad this out to two bloated movies instead of one fairly long but complete telling of The Hobbit's story. As much as I love The Hobbit- and it is one of my all-time favorite books- this movie is sounding more and more like an epic failure- a crushing disappointment that may even surpass the Watchmen. The Hobbit is an epic adventure that has a really cool dragon and some fantastic adventures. WHY must it be corrupted with characters that don't appear in it?

Adding characters that don't belong in a story is like remaking the first Star Wars and adding Yoda because everybody loves him.

Bitch, bitch, bitch, here we go again. As a huge LOTR fan, Jackson and company couldn't have done a better job. It was amazing. The biggest disappointment to me wasn't Bombadil or the Barrows, but leaving out the scouring of the Shire. I think it would have been awesome to see the Hobbits return to an overrun Shire only to kick ass and take it back!!! Relax everyone, PJ will make another epic masterpiece.

radagast was only mentioned. maybe a thought bubble scene?? as long as they put the whole book in, and any additions or changes are minor, ill be happy. they did fine with lotr, so this should be a cake walk for them

This is looking awesome. Can't wait to see who'll play Bard and Thranduil...I wonder if they'll add in a Legolas cameo in Thranduil's halls and get Orlando Bloom to return.

ok... just read all 4 books within the last year and literally just watched the entire extended trilogy last weekend........

so..... galadriel will most likely show up during the battle with the necromancer who turns out to be sauron trying to take over mirkwood; again..... events that apparently took place while bilbo and co. were making there way to lonely mountain, sans mithrandir...

sansClaymore
sansClaymore - 12/7/2010, 5:43 PM
heh like intruder said lol...
anyway movie one is a toss up as far as where it will end. 1)where they meet beorn after the tactical eagle squadron rescue or 2)when smaug takes bards flaming super punch to the chest.
regardless movie two will have a killer ending showing the battle of the five armies(dwarves, orcs, men, elves, beorn shows up with bears and shit, bilbo's out cold, eagles, wolves, probably talking trolls lol)
should be an all-around good wholesome family movie.

awesome news @JOSH!

I agree with sansClaymore and intruder.

I want to see the badass side of Galadriel. I was a little put off by how she was portrayed in LOTR. If i didn't know who she was and capable of I would have thought she was this weird, old elf chick who "passed the test." Showing who she is will make her parts in LOTR make more sense.

At least give us news of Ian Mckallen, Andy Serkis, and Hugo Weaving reprising their roles which were actually in the book instead of some of the characters mentioned.

Damn. This is a good thing. I mean, did anybody really know Andy Serkis, Karl Urban, Billy Boyd or Dom Monaghan before LOTR? They seem to cast who's best for the part, not the box office. Worked before....

And sad that CBM.com is now getting spammed with ad's. Yes, I'm talking to you, dfserercdg. What a username...

as long as they do the battle with the necromancer in Mirkwood, Rhadaghast, Saruman, Galadriel, Elrond, and others can all be in it. Im guessing this will be one of those 2 battle endings where you've got characters in one place doing that and the main event, the battle under the lonely mountain.

ckal: I know I've heard of several other popular characters from LOTR showing up in the movie adaptation of The Hobbit, including Galadriel, Legolas, the Sorcerer of Dol Guldur(revealed in LOTR to be Sauron, but who doesn't actually appear in The Hobbit), and one or two others whose name escapes me at the moment. I do remember seeing that it was resolved they would NOT have Aragorn appear, which is good. Just because these characters were alive at the time of The Hobbit doesn't mean we need to see them. The Hobbit should only involve the adventures of a company of dwarves, a wizard, and one initially reluctant hobbit on their way to the Lonely Mountain to confront a dragon, and the various characters that cross their paths on that journey. We don't need to see the battle against the Sorcerer of Dol Guldur or anything directly associated with that, since its only purpose in the story (at that time) is to separate Gandalf from the dwarves and Bilbo for a while. It will prove to be important in LOTR, but that's another story.

Intruder: While it has been admittedly a year or so since I last read The Hobbit, I don't remember Galadriel being specificially named in it. I DO remember seeing her in the Silmarillion, which I haven't pulled out in a while.

@ Comicbookguy

Theres actually a lot of ongoing events in the Hobbit if you read the appendixes in Return of the King. I think Peter is fleshing out the 2nd movie more into those ongoing events so for one, we/he can say farewell to the original cast how he wants and to fill in the backstory. You have to recall that this was supposed to be 3 movies when Deltoro was running the show. The 3rd was all inbetween stuff from the books, leading up the the Fotr. Now its 2 movies again and all the extra story has gotten pushed into the Hobbit sequel. Saying your sticking to the Hobbit is one thing but its narrowminded and your missing the bigger picture that is the War of The Ring starting.
comicb00kguy
comicb00kguy - 12/8/2010, 3:41 PM
Intruder: You are correct that Galadriel was active behind the scenes in some of the peripheral events of The Hobbit. I just don't see any point to her appearing in the movie outside of because some people who go to the movie who haven't read the book will be wondering where the other hobbits are and what's up with all those dwarves.

Weaponx: I'm not saying that there WEREN'T other events going on during the time of The Hobbit, many of which would ultimately lead up to the events of LOTR. The appendices in Return of the King hold some truly great stories that really flesh out the world of Middle-Earth and its fascinating history.

I guess the big thing here with my fussing about all this is that I don't want to see one of my favorite books corrupted by another writer adding things that may not be what Tolkien envisioned. I've seen too many other stories that I love ruined that way by people that are disrespectful towards the source material. The Hobbit's story could be told just fine in one three-hour or so movie.

thisheart - 12/8/2010, 8:26 PM
weaponxcustoms, I think it was always going to be 2 movies, as that was Del Toro's intention (although I could be wrong). I trust Jackson's vision and think it will be done tastefully, if they do edit the book to expand on events that were happening during The Hobbit, but might not have been in the forefront.

And I'm with SFCamerica, the scouring of the shire was the most important part that was left out of RotK, not Tom Bombadil.
comicb00kguy
comicb00kguy - 12/9/2010, 6:37 AM
ckal: Now I honestly hadn't considered that. That would be fine- using Galadriel to do a voiceover or in a similar role. I'm just worried about the story being changed too much to fit in all this additional material it sounds like they want to do.

I must also say that I was sorely disappointed not to see the scouring of the Shire in Return of the King, at least in the expanded edition on DVD. That was an important part of the story that showed how the four hobbits had changed and matured as a result of their adventures and experiences. Tom Bombadil was a lot of fun, but not as much a key part of the character development of the four hobbits.

@comicb00kguy

it is because of people like you, that cannot handle other people's adaptations, that give comic book/sci-fi fans a bad name.

Will this be perfect? No, I am sure that all Tolien fans, like most fans of a certain genre, will find some reason to not like an adaptation befcause a character was left out or a line was given to another key player or something like that.

I am a giant LOTR fan...I had a giant map of middle earth in my room in college. But as longas the essence of the story is still in tact and there are not any MAJOR changes then I will be happy. If we get to see some things on screen that were merely mentioned in the book or went on in the background you have to admit will be cool to see.

Just relax, man.
