Marcus Nispel's Conan remake is currently filming in Bulgaria. The film stars Jason Momoa as the title character, Stephen Lang, Rachel Nichols, Ron Perlman and Rose McGowan. Fans of the original Conan films, books and comics are fairly split as to their feeling about this new take on the character. It's still too soon to say whether this franchise relaunch will meet or exceed expectations.

Courtesy of the ConanMovieBlog, we now have our first look at the new Conan in action:

The studio has yet to set an official release date for this film.

I'm with those that anticipate a very big fail. Something just doesn't seem right about this one and I can't help but conjure up images of 10,000 BC and Troy, both of which were big fails in my book.

Hello, ladies, look at your man, and now back to Conan. Now back at your man, and now back to Conan. Sadly, he isn’t Conan...

I'm not ready to call FAIL just yet.

I am still planning on giving this a chance just because I really love Conan.

This guy could be the best actor on earth and it wouldn't matter because he doesn't look like Conan. He looks scrawny by comparison. Just take a moment and google image Conan. Frazetta's work and Schwarzenegger are what Conan looks like... not this guy. He has the hair, the face and the sword, but not the build. I'd be complaining all the same if this guy was suppose to be the Incredible Hulk. Conan is all about mass. He is suppose to tower above his enemies.

I agree Conan should be way Bigger but if the story and acting are good it will make up for it. Not to compare to the original but Not only did A.S. look the part but the whole tone of that movie felt like what conan should be.is def one of my fav. movies.

Well, I'll go on record as being the one swimming upstream because everything I'm seeing on this movie looks good to me. Arnold had Conans size, thats all, nothing else, noda, zilch.

Momoa may not be gigantic but he has a pretty damn good build to him and he can act a Hell of a lot better than Arnold could when he played the part.

Between this and the Spidey film and First Class which I agree are all iffy, I'm beginning to think everyone on here wants exactly what they want, the way that they want it, when they want it. Just try a little bit to wait untill you see the finished product before pronouncing it shit.

I was a huge comic fan for years before we started getting overloaded with CBM's and I find that I have enjoyed them all, (even the bad ones) for the simple fact that I never imagined any of them being made years ago.

I'm not saying you should condone crap movies but at least try watching it first to see if thats what it is.

Would you concede that it's FAIL then? I mean that's pretty good evidence ususally.

@ WeakMusic4Thomas... Did you get a chance to see that Showtime series Spartacus? That guy kicked so much ass on that show and he wasn't a beefcake. It COULD work, just sayin...

I'm not gonna give up on this just because his frakking muscles aren't big enough for some people! I think he actually really looks the part. Not sure about his acting abilities, but I dunno, I think this might surprise a few people.
TheHardGospel
TheHardGospel - 7/1/2010, 9:24 AM
@Hawksblueyes I'm not saying the movie will suck. I'm saying, CLEARLY, this guy doesn't look like Conan. I think everyone else here is saying that too. He doesn't look like Conan. The movie could turn out to be great, but there'll always be this debate on whether or not this guy is Conan. I mean, they could make a movie with a Black Superman and the same questions would come up. Acting isn't all that it takes. Looking the part is just as important.

The job of a director is to convince the audience that what they are watching is whatever story. If all of us are saying that's not Conan, the director is going to have a hard job convincing me/us.
TheHardGospel
TheHardGospel - 7/1/2010, 9:29 AM
@Agent0range, It's not always about kicking ass as looking the part. Bruce Willis was scrawny in Die Hard 1, but he kicked a lot of ass. It's possible, yes, but it's different when the character has a concrete look already.

*sigh* to comments saying Troy sucked and "this has better casting than Captain America"? Hardly. I don't mind people's opinions when they aren't completely off the wall lol. I know a lot of people who didn't like Troy because of Bloom, but that movie was rad regardless of how much we don't like Bloom in that movie, I watch it all the time. I can let that one kind of slide, but to say that Conan casting is better than Captain America's?! Get the [frick] out with that nonsense. Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones, etc... vs who? This random dude playing Conan, a C list character that NO ONE cares about? I'm not saying I don't like the old Conan films, I'm just saying in comparison to CA, there is no comparison lol. Huge gaps in quality and money put into the films. Conan will fail box office wise, which is unfortunate, but it's gonna happen. CA won't. Bottom line.
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 7/1/2010, 9:33 AM
Juggernaut: I most certainly would throw in the towel if the trailer looks awful. Almost everyone has written this off from a snapshot.

WeakMusic4Thomas: I agree 100%. I'm saying if you look at any Conan comic or book and compare it to Momoa, Momoa has the face of Conan and the beginnings of his build. (Remember) this is supposed to be a very young Conan.

Arnold had the build but absolutely nothing else. No blue eyes, no raven black hair and absolutely no cunning behavior or charisma, he was a brute.

I'm with Ror on this one I think Momoa looks very much like a young Conan. So far, I'm looking forward to this movie.

@ WeakMusic4Thomas...Agreed. But guns sort of trump beefcakeness don't you think? You don't need 24" pythons to drop a guy like a bad habit with a mp5.

Captain America casted everyone well except the main [frick]ing character Captain America!! Chris Evans is going to dismantle him. The supporting cast will turn CA into a WW2 Movie. It will be like watching band of brothers or saving private ryan.
Guy looks fine as Conan. Yall are bunch of belly achers. Granted who knows how is acting is. But Judge it when it comes out. A [frick]ing picture shouldnt be making your mind up before a trailer is even out. You mindless drones.
daFISH
daFISH - 7/1/2010, 9:39 AM
I am clearly going to be in the minority here but I like it. Arnold is iconic to be sure and his imprint on the character will be felt for a long time as well as Frazettas artwork depicting him (Conan). That said, Momoa is closer to the depiction that Robert Howard provided as far as physical attributes and his facial features captures the Frazetta depiction fairly well. Momoa is a fairly decent actor (Arnold was...well he was Arnold) and will hopefully provide more dynamic figh scenes instead of lumbering ones.

I look forward to this fresh take. We will see soon enough how well it was brought to the screen.

@RorMachine very good point, I'll wait til i see the trailer to voice my opinion

@Taboo13 Honestly I can't see how that's possible, because you're gorgeous. And I'm not a creep or a weirdo by any stretch, I'm just stating a fact.
