Director Peter Jackson Gives a Behind The Scenes Look At The Hobbit

We return to Middle Earth on December 14, 2012. Until then, you can catch a brief glimpse of a scene with Bilbo and Gollum at 01:09 and another scene with Bilbo and Elrond starting at the 01:47 mark. This 10 min. documentary blog video provides a lot of information on Peter Jackson's approach to filming such an epic movie.

The Hobbit is an upcoming two-part epic fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson. It is a film adaptation of the 1937 novel of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien and prequel to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings, returns as director of the film and also serves as producer and co-writer. The film will star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Richard Armitage, known for playing Lucas North in the BBC drama series Spooks, as Thorin Oakenshield. Several actors from Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy will reprise their roles, including Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, and Orlando Bloom. Additionally, composer Howard Shore, who wrote the score for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has confirmed his role in both parts of the film project. The two parts, entitled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, are being filmed back to back and are currently in production in New Zealand; principal photography began on March 21, 2011. They are scheduled to be released on December 14, 2012 and December 13, 2013, respectively.

Nice and in-depth, without being too spoilery.

Did not know Andy Sherkis was the second unit director.

wow it's amazing how much it goes through to make these films, can't believe Peter Jackson did such a wonderful job with lord of the rings which without a doubt the best trilogy ever so far(batman may beat that of course if it can get the 3rd one right)

but wonderful to see all this, but in a way that is why Warner bros is my favorite studio, when they believe in a movie they go all the way for their directors which sometimes can land them in trouble (Green Lantern $200 mil is way too much) but mostly it works, they don't come out and say to directors like Peter Jackson,Chris Nolan to tone down cost nope, they go all the way.

easily my second most anticipated film in 2012

My only question is where were all these dwarves during the trilogy?

@GraphicCity, the dwarves weren't a big focus beyond Gimli and the Mines. You'll see LOTS more of the dwarves in these two movies, which is something I'n excited for because dwarves have always been my favorite parts of Mythology.

@MegaMattMOS That's what I mean. It's a war to decide if everyone becomes enslaved and the dwarves just decide to sit it out?

I'm so glad Peter Jackson decided to direct The Hobbit movies, can't help thinking the look and feel of the movies would have been different to LOTR if someone else had done it.

@GraphicCity, well, it's hinted that the dwarves are fighting their own wars (Legolas: "I fear war already marches on their own lands") with the Goblins (Mines Of Moria).

@GC, But I know what you mean, I wish the dwarves had had a larger (HA!) presence in the movie too.

This will be great..

Also I am sure Tolkien would approve of a spin-of
movie from Lotr with the further adventures of
Legolas and Gimli, by Jackson of course..

These movies are straight escapism at its best. Very excited to see the Hobbit.

sweeeet! I'm so excited for this and like everyone else super happy that PJ took on the book. it just wouldn't have fitted with the other three if done by another director.

@GraphicCity-During the trilogy, the Dwarves were fighting the war on the northern front, along with the Mirkwood elves, the men of Dale and the Beornings. This was a global conflagration, and the meat of the trilogy follows only those parts that deal with the ring, the reinstitution of the Numenorean line to Gondor, and the passing of the elves of Lorien. Of the twelve "Hobbit Dwarves," some died at the Battle of Five Armies, some, like Balin, died between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and some few were at the Council of Elrond (Though perhaps not shown in the film) where it was decided that Gimli, the son of Gloin, one of the Hobbit dwarves, would accompany the ring. But the bulk of the Dwarven clans made there home in the North, and fought the war there.
