According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has gotten ahold of the movie rights for Dungeons & Dragons.

The studio is actually quite far along in the development of the project, as it will use a script by Wrath Of The Titans and Red Riding Hood scribe and Frank Darabont protege David Leslie Johnson.

The film will be produced by Roy Lee ("The Lego Movie") and Courtney Solomon. Courtney, should be familiar to D&D fans, as Courtney was the director of a previous D&D film, that starred Jeremy Irons. Wait, Jeremy Irons was in a Dungeons & Dragons film? My how the mighty have fallen.

For WB, the plan to make every effort to turn Dungeons & Dragons into their next Harry Potter-like franchise. With the popularity of other fantasy films and shows, like HBO Game Of Thrones it's not hard to see why WB feels this is the time to tap into the genre.

It's a shame that any new D&D film will always live in the shadows of the cinematic masterpiece that was released in 2000.

The book "The Crystal Shard" is written almost like a screenplay. The absolute PERFECT movie setup. Four Heroes each of a fantasy race (Drizzt, Wulfgar, Bruenor, and Regis), Evil Wizard, A Nasty Demon, An asshole town Councilmen([frick] Kemp), and a giant horde of giants, orcs and goblins...awesomefun..

Listen: I would love for this movie to work and it could be very entertaining, but it will not be! This movie will suck. It will suck for many reasons, but most especially because WB treats all of its scifi, fantasy and comic book material with complete disdain and is extremely condescending toward us, the fans. The movie will be cheesy, poorly thought out and poorly edited. It will appeal only to children and the most simple of fans.

@m0th3r

Definitely need everyone's favorite Drow Ranger.

Crystal Shard would be amazing on the big screen, if it was done right.

But honestly, they really should get Salvatore involved in the screenplay regardless of whether they use Drzz't or not.

Or at the very least use him as a creative consultant on the movie.

Here's another thought:

Dragon Lance Chronicles.

That would make for a great trilogy, if done right.

Does this include rights to Forgotten Realms?

Tom Hiddleston would be a badass Drizzt.

As previously stated, using the characters from the Icewind Dale trilogy and done correctly, would be money in the back. Of course you'd have to do the first three Drizzt books first then role into that. And I agree about Salvatore being involved, his books are literal D&D gold. Outside of that Dragonlance would be kick ass. Tap Weiss and Hickman to assist the project and you'd have another sound hit trilogy, if done correctly.

Just as long as they don't make any references to the game, or game mechanics. That would be a quick way to certain fail.

The rules are just there to allow DMs and players to tell stories. So let's hope the D&D part is just an in to the stories and worlds that are part of it.

Did anyone say Drizzt?

Not Hiddleston. Needs to be a black dude.

They could have multiple franchises from this, come to think about it - Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Greyhawk, Dark Sun, Planescape, etc. - if they throw some money and good talent at it, the potential is huge.

m0ther - Dont forget the Ice Dragon too ;)

I say a Forgotten Realms Drizzt story or GTFO. Actually the Dark Elf triliogy compressed into one movie would be pretty cool too though Crystal Shard would be equally good.

Plus the books has a lot of social commentary...

Agreed. It would be a good chance for the studios to test Drizzt on the big screen since you know theyre wary of putting a dark elf on at the moment. If they do use crystal shard I hope they do a flash back scene from the DET where Drizzt first meats Bruenor and Cattie. Loved those scenes in the book.
