Ian McKellen Has The Perfect Actor In Mind To Play Gandalf In Amazon's LORD OF THE RINGS Show: Himself!

In Sir Ian McKellen's mind, there is only one Gandalf, and that is him. The actor was recently asked for his take on Amazon's upcoming LOTR series, and you can read what he had to say about the role below.

Sir Ian McKellen apparently isn't done playing the legendary wizard Gandalf quite yet. With a new Lord of the Rings television series in production at Amazon, McKellen, who appeared on Graham Norton's BBC Radio 2 show, was asked if it was going to be annoying to have another Gandalf around.

The Academy Award-nominated star made it quite clear that there is only one Gandalf.

“What do you mean, another Gandalf?” he responded. “I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I’m not too old.”

Amazon's TV series won't be a re-adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's LOTR novels, but will instead focus on "unexplored stories" from Middle-Earth. How big of a role Gandalf will play in the series remains to be seen, but it's good to know Ian McKellen is down to return if needed.

I love this guy. He is just a prestige actor yet he isn't highbrow or looks down fantasy or comic book franchises. He genuinely seems to love the part.

So does that mean this show is in the same universe as the films? Or is WB even involved in this production at all?

Amazon needs to get in contact with McKellan before it's too late.
Come on Amazon, show us the meaning of haste!

Even if Gandalf doesn't appear in the stories themselves (assuming they are based on the silmarrilion tales) having Ian a Gandalf perhaps narrate the prologue (akin the Galadirel in the FOTR) would be glorious.

I feel the only story that could involve Gandalf directly would be the capture of Gollum by Aragorn before the fellowship of the ring.

Yeah, let him keep doing the role. And if they need a new Saruman since Christopher Lee past (R.I.P.), how about Anthony Hopkins.

i'm really curious which storys they will tell or adapt... i hope it's not about dwarfs again. i hope it's more like the lord of the rings and not more like the hobbit. i mean, i really liked the hobbit trilogy, but it was full of cg and also the story a little bit (it should have been two movies and not three).

if the series is a huge fail,... then whatever, it's really gonna hurt, but nobody can take away my film series.

Nice to hear. It would be cool to see other actors return for small cameos too.

Sir Ian IS Gandalf bottom line if they don't cast him to play the part then they might as well not even feature the character as whoever they do cast will always be compared to him
