'Smaug' Lays Waste To Laketown In New THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES Stills

Empire have released three incredible new images from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies. Two of them feature Smaug the dragon making good on his threat to bring "fire and death" to Laketown, while the other gives us a look at Bard (Luke Evans) in battle.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

Starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Hugo Weaving and Orlando Bloom, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is set to be released on December 17th.

So glad that Smaug succeeded in building up his confidence again with his little "I am fire, I am DEATH!" speech, after failing to even hurt any of the dozen short-legged folks that stumbled around his home making fun of him for half an hour.

Now go attack the shit out of that definitely totally immobile huge wooden city, killer - I believe in you!

@Kyos haha I agree completely, that unnecessary subplot involving the dwarves at the end of 2 only helped to make Smaug look like an idiot, never thought that Jackson would manage to let Smaug outstay his welcome

Did Smaug grow like 4 or 5 times his size in the space of a movie? In the last film his head was the same size as Bilbo (A Hobbit) yet now his head is the same size as a house? The fudge?

@Kyos
Agreed, went into the Desolation Of Smaug expecting him to be killing people or anything. Instead he did nothing the entire movie, then got out-smarted by Dwarves and a Hobbit before finally almost getting killed due to his own stupidity and lust for Gold.

Well, Smaug lost two of his limbs between the theatrical cut of AUJ and DoS, so I guess pretty much everything goes...

It seems as though Jackson is at war with himself in terms of keeping the light tone of the book and the serious gritiness of the lord of the rings franchise, which in the end becomes a huge issue because the films don't know whether to be a whimsical fantasy adventure or a dark prequel to the Lord of the Rings. If only Del Toro had stuck it out... sigh.

@Retrofit - bingo. Peter Jackson straight up emasculated Smaug with that awful furnace sequence in the mountain. 2 movies of build up to "the greatest calamity of our age" and thats what we get. Visually yeah he was freaking intimidating! But a dragon that keeps armies of elves, dwarves, and men away by the mere memory of him can't even gobble up a few home invaders? Stupid. PJ cut the balls off of Smaug with that scene. I can't stand it.

As much as you guys like to rip into these movies, I have a lot of fun with them. Sure they're not perfect and have their fair share of flaws but I just enjoy the hell out of them. All this talk of emasculating Smaug and all I can think of was how awesome he was! I guess like anyone else, you'll always have a different viewing experience as someone else. Just thought I'd chime in from someone who actually enjoyed this film.
