We have already seen some photo's from the set of The Hobbit, currently filming in New Zealand. Today EMPIRE Online posted a photo of the first magazine cover to feature The Hobbit. The cover gives us a look at a much younger version of Gandalf the Grey and Bilbo Baggins.

Peter Jackson's return to Middle Earth staring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett and Orlando Bloom is due out December 2012.

Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug.

I agree, Hawksblueyes. It would be such an epic duel to watch. I think Dumbledore would be the first to go. Gandalf the Grey probably wouldn't last, but Gandalf the White would do some serious damage! But then again, Merlin is like the grandaddy of the wizards.

Commando: Gandalf the Grey took out the Balrog.

HULK2099: It says "younger" not "young." If I remember correctly, The events in The Hobbit take place around 50 years before the events in LOTR. Gandalf walked Middle Earth for hundreds of years before any of these events occurred.

True Hawks, but that battle with the Balrog is what killed Gandalf in the first place.

Freeman's a perfect choice for Bilbo! And it's cool that he also looks a bit like Pippin from the LOTR trilogy, since Pippin is a relative of Bilbo, and the book often refers to Bilbo's 'Tookishness'.
This is going to be an amazing couple of films.

At first, I was skeptical, but after seeing the screens and the way it's handled, I slowly get really excited. It's going to be awesome.

And the cover rocks, Ian McKellen is a god.

Bring it. One thing I never understood about Return of the King.. why did Frodo leave? I was pretty darn sad when he left Middle-Earth. Very emotional scene.

^^ in the book all ringbearers went to the undying lands (including sam, who went in his old age, since he used the ring briefly though gorgoroth)... Why isn't clear, but I see it as a form of compensation for their suffering, and since their nature was changed due to the ring usage, they could achieve their full potential at Valinor (though wouldn't be immortal).

In the case of frodo it's said that he couldn't live in middle earth anymore, since he always felt some part of him was missing (attachment to the power of the ring, seen in the movie as Bilbo asking for the ring even in very old age), and the pain he often felt because of the nazgûl (witchking) blade.
