Fans of '80s sword 'n sorcery adventure, Red Sonja, have been waiting a long time for some kind of re-release of the campy fantasy tale, and a 4K restoration is coming our way on July 18th. Now, Studiocanal UK (via SFFGazette.com) has debuted a brand-new re-release trailer and steelbook cover.
Released back in 1985, Richard Fleischer's Red Sonya was developed as a spin-off of Conan the Barbarian, and even though Arnold Schwarzenegger starred alongside Brigitte Nielsen as the flame-haired warrior of the title, he actually played a completely different character named Kalidor.
At the time, this proved to be a little confusing for Robert E. Howard fans who were hoping to see the legendary Conan join forces with Sonja, but despite being lambasted by critics upon its release, the movie would go on to gain a strong cult following over the years. A reboot is still in development (as far as we know), but we haven't had any updates since original star Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and The Wasp) parted ways with the project.
Check out the trailer below, and let us know if you plan on adding Red Sonja to your Blu-ray collection.
Brigitte Nielsen (Rocky IV, Cobra) stars as the iconic, flame-haired heroine who sets out to avenge the death of her family after being granted extraordinary powers by a mysterious vision, but only if she vows to never fall in love with a man who cannot defeat her in combat. She is tasked to stop the tyrannical Queen Gedren (Sandahl Bergman), who is in possession of a talisman that could destroy the world. On her journey she meets Kalidor (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who is gifted with unusual strength and insists on helping Sonja end the Queen’s reign of terror.
