On paper, the CW's Arrow appears to be making all the right moves. Deadshot, Deathstroke, Chyna White, Huntress and now The Royal Flush Gang (RFG) are all confirmed to appear on the show. Debuting in an episode titled 'Legacies', that probably implies that we won't see an origin story for the villains but one of the later incarnation of the RFG. The group has ties to Hector Hammond and Maxwell Lord in the pages of DC Comics.

Actor Kyle Schmid will portray Ace in the show's version of the RFG. Schmid was previously seen on Being Human" and "Blood Ties." Zap2It reports that his real name is Kyle Preston, a slight deviation from the Android Ace of the second generation Royal Flush Gang. No confirmation yet as to whether Schmid is indeed playing an android.

The Royal Flush Gang or RFG are fictional characters in DC Comics. They first appeared in Justice League of America #43 in March 1966 under the leadership of Professor Amos Fortune.

They are a group of playing card-themed supervillains who are usually thwarted by the superheroes they encounter. They have code names based on a royal flush in poker i.e. Ace, King, Queen, Jack, Ten.

The original Royal Flush Gang was Professor Amos Fortune's childhood gang. With Fortune himself as Ace, they fought the Justice League on two occasions, using Fortune's luck-altering "stellaration" technology. The second Royal Flush Gang was set up by Green Lantern villain Hector Hammond in Justice League of America #203. Hammond led the group as "Wildcard". This version wore technologically advanced costumes based on the suit of spades. The gang split up and went on to have separate criminal careers before re-establishing themselves, without Hammond. They were twice hired by Maxwell Lord as part of his manipulation of Justice League International. Later, they were reorganized and reoutfitted by a successor to the Golden Age Green Lantern villain the Gambler. The post-crisis version of the Royal Flush Gang appears in Justice League of America (volume 2) #35. This version is working under the authority of Amos Fortune, who is addressed by other members as "Wild Card". In the following issue, Fortune gives a history of the gang. It seems to combine the first and third gangs' histories/characteristics, with Fortune indicating that he was always running the group in some capacity.

Arrow premiers October 10th on the CW.

@Grif

You haven't seen it yet.

RFG best character addition I've heard so far. I'm afraid they might be saturating the first season with so many great characters though.

They're really gooing all or nothing, which I don't mind. If I only see one season it'll be this one.

@calin88
When they will be robbing a bank, why not?

I am pretty sure that most of the superheroes or super vilains will be smallvillized (meaning shitty costumes and shit origins).

Deadshot and Deathstroke could have been wearing black special ops suit (with small parts colored with the original colors, but darker). Add a high tech helmet for Deadshot and a [frick]ing balaclava for Deadstroke. We might see something better in Arrow but it's still made by CW, the channel that [frick]ing raped DC superheroes and vilains.
AtomicChipmunk
AtomicChipmunk - 9/16/2012, 7:16 AM
And why the [frick] is Green Arrow getting important vilains (Deathstroke and Deadshot)?

Wow this show is going to be an epic failure, it will not make it past the 1st season. Lame. This should never have been started, there are so many other heros that would have been better.
This is going to be a DC version of those stupid Vampire movies.

I actually agree 100% with AtomicChipmunk. He's right. CW raped Deathstroke and Deadshot horribly. Those assholes made Deathstroke into [frick]ing john mcccain with an eye stone (they didn't even get the eye patch right)

With Deadshot they made him into a cowboy hick.

Deathstroke and Deadshot should pop up in movies, at least there they would be done justice AWAY from the [frick]ing retarded CW.

Smallville raped at least a dozen other characters too including even SUPERMAN himself.

@zachman2013- No offense but you can't really say it'll be ten times better than lame ass Smallville when all we have seen are a few set pics here and there. And with this show recycling the use of Lex's mansion from Smallville and the tired idea of ollie and merlyn being friends before enemies it seems this show will definitely revert into Smallville sadly.

Anyone think John Barrowman might be playing his father?

This is just speculation, but even though Barrowman's character hasn't been revealed, we do know he will be a mysterious figure who is wealthy, a prominent figure in Starling City and an acquaintance of the Queen Family.

His first appears in episode 5.

Kyle Schmid first appears in episode 6 as Kyle Reston, also known as Ace. If you check the spoilers on Green Arrow TV, back before the RFG were revealed, there's speculation that a character named Derek will appear and be called the King of Diamonds.

Derek Reston is a comic book character who appeared in Justice League of America in the early 80s. He was the president of a corporation who was forced by Hector Hammond to build the android version of RFG member Ace.

Again, this is just speculation, but we have Barrowman as a prominent wealthy figure who has ties to the Queens. That would fit the president of a corporation.

You have a character named Kyle Reston also called Ace, who shares the last name with the man who actually created Ace in the comics. And you have rumors that a character named Derek (possibly Reston) may be in the episode and is being called The King of Diamonds. Creator and father is basically the same thing. He could easily be his father in this version.

Like the article says, episode 6 is called Legacies, so that could mean this is a multi-generational gang, with both father and son involved.

I'm not entirely familiar with the RFG, but I would assume King of Diamonds would be the leader of an incarnation.

We'll see.

I really want to like this show and am willing to give it a go, but it doesn't make sense that they aren't going to have any villains with superpowers, yet they are going to have a super strong android and that is realistic enough for them?

I know the Royal Flush Gang is technologically-powered, but there can be a fine line sometimes between superpowers and technology. Just make the villains the way they are intended to be and don't worry about whether they have powers or not.

You know CW wasn't involved in the creative decisions in Smallville right ? they were only producing, and saying if they were happy or not . It will be the same with Arrow. If you blame somoeone, blame the writers and designers, not CW.
tazmaniak
tazmaniak - 9/16/2012, 8:04 AM
@Ranger14, He's going to be the human version, not the android.

They want to make a specific type of show. And that means unnatural or supernatural things don't fit in their world. They want to make a crime-thriller about a vigilante, not a straight-up superhero show. If that what it takes to keep a show on the air, then I'll roll with it. It actually fits Green Arrow, as he rarely encounters superhumans in his solo series, and didn't for a longtime during the Mike Grell run.

The producers said they will be using characters who have powers in the comics, but will creatively work around them not actually having powers. I figure technology will substitute metahuman abilities for these characters.

@blackagar94, this is what I'm talking about. The CW, which is a network and not a person, doesn't write these shows. It's up to the showrunners and their staff. The network president gives suggestions, but he/she isn't involved in the writing process.

Also keep in mind that Dawn Ostroff, president of The CW since it's inception, left in June of last year. She was the former head of Lifetime and had a focus on fashion and soap opera-esque drama. She developed America's Next Top Model, Gossip Girl and 90210 and championed those shows. She's the one who eventually decided the network would solely focus on a female audience, something The WB and UPN didn't do.

But Mark Pedowitz is now the head of The CW. While he headed ABC Studios, he developed shows like Lost, Desperate Housewives,Criminal Minds, Ugly Betty and Reaper (a show Ostroff canceled) and is a more well-rounded network president. He's made it clear the network can't survive if it focuses on that one demo and excludes the male audience.

He's said he's using the combo of Supernatural and Arrow to make a night that's aimed at male audiences. He also says that if Arrow is successful, he hopes to work with DC on developing more male-oriented superhero series.

Anyway, Pedowitz has held high positions at both MGM and ABC and is a lot more competent than the former CW president. He doesn't appear to favor the same shows Ostroff did at the detriment of other shows and he doesn't seem to be pushing the melodramatic plots on the shows.

I'm honestly looking forward to this season. Arrow, Supernatural, Nikita and Cult. Cult is a show that was in development at The WB back in 2006 and was then at ABC a few years ago. Pedowitz thought the project was so strong back when it was at ABC that it was the first thing he picked up when pilot season came around. Looks interesting.

I say give it a chance. This show has executive producers, showrunners and writers who have worked with these characters for a number of years. They're not just random TV hires, but creators who have extensive knowledge of the DC Universe and actually care about the characters and how they're presented. I think that's something Smallville never had.

Until they give me a reason not to be, I'm excited.

Been pretty "neutral" about this show but it's a bit hard not to get excited about all the major appearances happening. I don't watch the CW like... at all so I'm going to have to try really hard to remember to watch when it premieres.

And I'm going to hazard a guess that the main reason they're overloading this show with major players is because it's the only platform they have right now to test drive characters and see which ones the general audience will dig enough to check out in future projects.
