Seth Rogen Disappointed With Uninformed Online Criticism of The Green Hornet

Seth Rogen explains his frustrations with uninformed Internet critiques over the course of shooting The Green Hornet.

Seth Rogen talked with MTV recently about his upcoming film The Green Hornet. In what is an interesting conversation, he told MTV how he was aware of the fact that the online community would be against this movie until they had the chance to actually see it in theaters. He also told them that knowing this, didn't always help during the long process of bringing the film together.

Now, with most reviews for the film being beyond positive, Rogen says people will finally have the opportunity to make an informed decision instead of assuming they know what the film is like.

"It's something that Evan would constantly have to remind me of throughout the process, in that this is kind of exactly what we thought would happen. From the second we thought of doing a movie like this, I remember talking about it like, 'Everyone's going to think it's going to be insane and terrible and we'll just have to keep our heads down and make it, and then it'll come out and then people will slowly see that we weren't nuts and that it was actually a good idea.' "

"As you get wrapped up in it, as there's two years of time where people are saying how bad it is, without having seen anything, it does get frustrating and, ultimately, just disappointing, more than anything. You look at these outlets that, as a comic book nerd, I kind of respected at times and thought were interesting voices just say things that are insane and completely uninformed and uneducated and based on no reality whatsoever, and it's kind of like, 'Oh, that's disappointing. I thought these guys were cool.' But they're not. They're just like everybody else."

"It is nice that people actually have to base their assumptions on the movie now and not just what they think the movie is going to be like."

Hawksblueyes: I have to admit that I have been one of the people he is complaining about. I still fail to see how a Green Hornet film with Rogen involved can be anywhere near true to the character. However, it does seem after reading the initial reviews for the film that I could be completely off base and I am planning on viewing the film myself (which I was not planning until very recently). If it's as good as some are claiming, I may have to apologise to Mr. Rogen myself.

This was one of the movies I had doubts because it's hard to take Rogen seriously, but I'm willing to give it a chance because the Car is just bad ass, and I can't wait to see how the plot plays out. There's so many routes you can go with Green Hornet that this movie will most likely have a sequel.

telavizion @ I've never watched the Hornet TV show at all... I read the actual comic books and I still think KEVIN SMITH would have made an epic GREEN HORNET!

Still, this should be good but putting too much HUMOR in it is wrong...

Look at BATMAN & ROBIN!

Like I said... fingers crossed its good though!

I liked the movie, it was fun and less comedic than expected. It is very much the story of how Brit Reid becomes the Green Hornet, its about his early days where he is naive and immature but eventually turns into the Green Hornet known by fans. It is more the evloution of a hero.

I've seen the trailers, looked like crap.
I will say that Kato and the car looked cool, Seth Rogen was the worst choice for a superhero.
Looks like a great Kato movie, but a crappy Green Hornet movie.
They should just edit out Rogen and call the movie "Kato & the Car"...I'd go see that movie.

Basically Seth is right. You can't judge a film until it has been SEEN.

Critics of X-men: First Class beware!! The news on this film is pretty flimsy at best. And to my knowledge no ones seen a script or a treatment (which can get changed radically during a shoot) so hold fire until its in the theatres about whether you hate a film or not.

Of course, if it is a turd after that, by all means share your opinion.

@ hawksblueyes

these are lines of the reveiw from empire film mag no.1 film mag in the u.k.

when i hear shit like this,i'm put off paying to see the green hornet.

"too often scene just sit there, limp & directionless."

"poor old christoph waltz's chudnofsky isn't so much a character as a quirk with lines."

"rogen is his usual self as reid, although the fact that hornet remains a buffoon throughout gets very old, very fast."

"in terms of energy,verve,wit & genuinely exciting action sequences,the green hornet-oh,go on then-simply doesn't have a sting."

reveiw score 2/5.

Orphix - 1/13/2011, 7:53 AM
Leee@ I think the reference to first class is to Xavier and Magneto and whoever is hanging out with them back in the swinging 60's rather than the original 5 pupils from the comic books.

The term first class can also have more than one meaning - subtextual as well as literal so I wouldn't get too strung up about how it's gonna work out.

Admittedly I hate Fox too - but thats mainly cos of its news channel than anything specific to the film studio.
StrangerX
StrangerX - 1/13/2011, 7:53 AM
@orphix-First class is a whole different story/ leee is right it's not the actual first class. They have already screwed up continuity so bad that any future movie will have to be a reboot. and The Last Stand killed Cyclops wtf.

I just read an official review from a major paper here in Canada and according to the review, it's a horrible movie. I believe the author's opinion was "this could end up taking the title of worst movie of the year. It's a good thing there are plenty of movies still to come out."

Personally I can't stand Rogen's movies and I won't be seeing this one. I am interested to read the reviews from the members on here who have smack talked this movie and are going to see it. Who knows, maybe it will be a good film or maybe their dislike for it will be justified.

StrangerX@ I hear what ya saying but the continuity argument is superfluous. Mainly because the x-men movie universe is now its own creation and also partly because no one has seen X-Men: First Class so we don't know whether it uses it's own continuity effectively.

Of course you can critisise Last Stand cos you don't like what happened to Cyclops - thats fine because you have seen it! :o)

I'm gonna give it a chance mainly because the critics are in between. I would treat it like Jonah Hex, but I think it deserves better. Plus Knocked Up was funny as hell how can you hate on Rogen.

I wasn't thrilled about Seth Rogen taking on this role, but from the reviews, he seems to have done a nice job of adapting the character well to his ability to portray it.

Don't forget that many good comedic actors have done some of their best acting in less comedic roles. Robin Williams, Bill Murray, Jim Carrey and even Adam Sandler are much better "actors" in less comedic roles when they don't spend all their time mugging to the camera or acting like morons. On the other hand, dramatic actors rarely can make the switch to being effective comedic actors -- Leslie Neilson is probably the best example of a dramatic actor who was successful at becoming a comedic actor. Even the great actors like Merryl Streep,Robert DeNiro and Robert Duvall are a bit awkward in comedy roles.

sight & sound online mag hasn't reveiwed the shite yet.

look if you want to pay & see this crap, then go for it.

this film isn't getting my £7.50 ticket price,i would be pretty pissed if the film was shit & i wasted my money on it & helped them come to the conclusion "i think this needs a sequel."

i'll wait for it to be shown on tv for free, then i can change the channel if its shit.

@marvel72 you're a jaded hater. I at least gather more than one review unlike you, HERP DERP

can't wait to see this tomorrow. Looks awesome

As for the First Class debate, here's the thing:
IT'S NOT COMIC CONTINUITY, IT'S THE MOVIES DAMMIT. STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT IT "NOT BEING THE REAL FIRST CLASS" ITS FOR THE MOVIES!

Herp Derp is what you say when someone makes stupid comments that don't contribute anything worthwhile.

IronicMan
IronicMan - 1/13/2011, 9:00 AM
Sheesh, people are so upset about it being "goofy." Man, look at Mystery Men. That movie's great and it's an outright comedy.
Beyond that, just consider CBMs from a distance. When it boils down to it, they're still about a guy in a rubber fetish suit beating up another guy in a costume. They're ALL goofy.

Rogen's Green Hornet is nothing like the character at all... Britt Reid is not a goof... party animal etc... Let Zack Snyder do Supes like this or Nolan's Batman or Any other comicbookmovie adaption the fan's would do the same... Most people are too young to appreciate the Original Green Hornet...

I call for an immediate Reboot!!
