The Green Hornet Recieves Almost Unanimous Praise At Test Screenings Making A Sequel Likely!

Despite a fairly troubled history and doubts from fans that this movie will be anything other than another CBM flop, the results from a recent test screening were so good it seems that Sony are already talking about a sequel...

Ever since it was announced that would play the Green Hornet, most fans have had nothing but negative things to say about the upcoming movie from Sony. However, things are looking much better as results from an early screening have apparently been very positive. Here is an excerpt from the report over at The LA Times.

The studio had a test screening Tuesday night in Long Beach that went better than anyone could have hoped for. According to one of my spies who was on hand, after the ratings cards were tabulated, the movie had scored a 93 rating in what is known as the top two boxes (the percentage of people saying the film was either excellent or very good) with 83% of the moviegoers saying they would "definitely recommend" the film to their friends.

Even if the film was shown for the kind of younger audience that would be most likely to want to see it, those are impressive numbers, which is perhaps why the studio executives on hand at the screening were seen breathing huge sighs of relief. In fact, the Sony high command was so buoyant that Amy Pascal was overheard talking about the possibility of a sequel after seeing the test results.

Were you at the test screening? If so, we'd love to hear from you! Just click on the "Contact Me" link at the top left hand side of this page. The Green Hornet is set to be released in 3D on January 14, 2011!

the casting for these pre-run are made from general audience that don't even know what they are going to see before they enter the room deadpool72. So your theory about it being staged with fans is unlikely.

This being said, It wouldn't hurt if you watch your level of language. We are not all 8 years old like you.

[frick] i hate Rogen. He could win an academy award and i'd still hate his performances. Doesn't matter what he plays in, i just hate having to see him. It ruins the whole movie for me. It's not as bad if it's just a cameo but a main role? I wouldn't go see this film to save my own life! I guess it really doesn't help that i've never been a fan of Green Hornet either.

Hmmmm...

Wasn't there an earlier screen test before where majority of the viewers hated it? Did they re-edit it in the last minute? If they do then I might reconsider. Otherwise this could be just a promotional gimmick wherein viewers are all oblivious who the green hornet really is.

Again the issue for me is not Rogan since I don't mind an ordinary guy playing the green hornet (or maybe because I haven't watch any of his movie yet-- he is not popular in my country). What is important is that it is not campy but be more realistic. Im even open to less dark as long as it has great intelligent plot and intrigue.

They have done everything that they can to get people into the theaters for a movie that we have heard nothing but bad things about. I like Rogen and I could care less who plays the Green Hornet so I was happy with the choice. If anything he would get me into the theater otherwise I probably would have waited for a bootleg or netflix. Reshoots? Converted to 3d? Re-edits? They have done everything that they can to salvage what they have on their hands. The trailer looks all right. I will see the movie but how often do studios release the results of test screenings in this manner? It could be fairly common but to me it just seems like the studio is saying "see, we are gonna make a second one and people love the first so make sure you see it, especially those who doubted it"

loganoneil & teabag- Seriously, i have no idea what Kevin Smith was smoking when he first glanced at Rogen and thought he'd be the next big star. I guess he was smoking the same stach as when he thought he could shit out nothing but gold. Cop Out's a bitch in'it? For my money, i don't know who's worse between Seth Rogen and Danny McBride. Those two should never have been allowed on screen.

loganoneil - 11/12/2010, 6:19 AM
LMAO - Danny McBride, what a schlep! It's Will Ferrell syndrome. Actually, that's not fair - there are a slew of 'comedians' out there that are all 'one-trick ponies' (Ferrell, McBride, Rogen, Adam Sandler, Jim Carrey, Vince Vaughn, etc.). They rely on the same tired gag of making asses out of themselves and trying to pass that off as 'humor'! It MIGHT have been funny the first couple of times out the gate, but now it's just old and tired the hundreth time 'round! At least with Sandler, Carrey and Vaughn (and to a lesser extent Ferrell), their careers are FINALLY dying out (though not fast enough for me!)!

The old TV show was always a bit on the corney side even though it was played straight, so turning it into an action/comedy kind of makes sense. However, it is difficult to get an action/comedy just right, with the right kind of balance. As for Rogen, I'm kind of meh on him. I certainly did not see him for this role -- Vince Vaughn or Ryan Reynolds I could see. The trailers look pretty good.

Several of the "comedic" actors have been able to give very good performances when they tone down the "excesses" of the "see how stupid I can be" performances. Sandler and Carrey have actually made some pretty good movies. Ferrell seems to find good projects for himself once in a while, like "Anchorman." Maybe this will be the movie where Rogen really shows that he can act. Nobody thought that Michael Keaton would make a decent Batman . . . maybe Rogen can pull it off.

I have a "wait-n-see" attitude towards this one. I'll see what the reviews and several friend say before I run out to see it.

JoshWilding - 11/12/2010, 7:03 AM
I'm not a massive Rogen fan and am still stuggling to imagine him being able to pull off a role like this but the trailer looked great and I'm looking forward to it regardless.

loganoneil
loganoneil - 11/12/2010, 7:19 AM
Local Man - I think you're confusing 'The Green Hornet' TV show with that 'Batman' POS with Adam West and Burt Ward (which is understandable because they came out at the same time and were produced by the same people). 'Green Hornet' was NEVER played for laughs (while 'Batman' was) and ALWAYS had a serious theme (except for the Bat/GH crossover episode). It's also one of the reasons it didn't do so well commercially. Everyone was expecting another 'Batman' and when they didn't get it, it was cancelled.

I think it's HYSTERICAL that Burt Ward (who was a black belt in Karate) thought he was the sh!t and could take out Bruce Lee! When Brue heard about this, he actually went looking for Burt to call him out, but Ward tucked tail and ran for the hills!

'Anchorman' was in 2004 (and it was the same ole' tired schtick seen in just about EVERY Will Ferrell movie!)! ...and what 'quality' films has Mr. Ferrell made since? ...'Bewitched'? ...'Taladega Nights'?! ...'Blades of Glory'?! ...'Step Brothers'??!! ...'Land of the Lost'???!!! About the ONLY semi-decent thing he's done in the past SIX YEARS has been 'Megamind' - and that's a CARTOON! Honestly, WHY does this man still have a job in Hollywood?! ...and don't even get me started on Vaughn, Sandler or Carrey! I for one knew Michael Keaton had 'something' when he was cast as Batman - he is, after all a brilliant ACTOR!

But who knows? Maybe you're right - maybe this will be the movie that shows Rogen can act and isn't just another buffoon milking America 'stupid'-bone... and maybe hundred-dollar bills will come shooting out of my sphincter ! In any case, I'm not holding my breath for either! The fact that they took a SERIOUS property that made Brue Lee a star and turned it into a 'Starsky and Hutch'-style comedy is an insult, and for that they can kiss my @ss!

thekabsin - 11/12/2010, 7:47 AM
loganoneil- Stranger than Fiction, not a typical Ferrell movie. He did quite well and while the humor was Will Ferrell humor(toned down) the movie achieved what it was going for and hit on several emotions. He was all so in a smaller movie years ago called Melinda and Melinda, it was a Woody Allen film so you can only imagine how that went. Ferrell has had quite the career and I believe that he has earned his stay. While it does get annoying at times(or most) every now and then he has something worthwhile that reminds you of why he is where is today.

thekabsin
thekabsin - 11/12/2010, 7:56 AM
Well if you are going to take that route, opinions do vary and despite your opinion of Will Ferrell and his acting abilities you are able to name off all of the films that he has starred in in the last five years. Sandler had Punch Drunk Love, Carrey had The Majestic, Eternal Sunshine, and The Man on the Moon. Rogen did great in Observe and Report whether you liked it or not. Whether you like these actors or not they have an audience, make millions and keep raking in audience after audience. It must be because they have no talent or acting abilities. So I guess while we have opinions the numbers are what really say something.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 11/12/2010, 8:14 AM
The box office totals of the movies you listed (as verified by Box Office Mojo):

'Punch Drunk Love' - $17,844,216 (did not place in top 10)
'The Majestic' - $27,807,266 (opened #8)
'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' - $34,400,301 (opened #7)
'Man on the Moon - $34,607,430 (opened #6)
'Observe and Report' - $24,007,324 (opened #4)

'Stranger Than Fiction' - $40,660,952 (opened #4)
'Melinda and Melinda' - $3,826,280 (did not place in top 10)

Mind you, these are the TOTAL amounts made for each movie during their ENTIRE run of MONTHS in the theaters. Wow, these guys are just RAKING in the big bucks! Like I said before, "Opinions vary..."
thekabsin
thekabsin - 11/12/2010, 8:19 AM
I was referencing these movies not because of there earnings but because these movies showed these actors abilities to act outside of their typical genre. I am sorry that I did not clarify that. These movies did not do so well and they did get mixed reviews. Aside from all of that the movies show that these actors can act without having to make complete idiots of themselves. While these movies maybe not be breaking records at the box office those numbers still really arent that bad.

edit: according to your box office mojo most of the films that I listed saw a limited release in theaters and Melinda and Melinda only saw 76 theaters in its release? Based on the numbers you gave I would actually say that is quite impressive despite the budgets of the films.

We can go back and forth all day. I am not trying to argue on the internet. You just really need to relax when it comes to trashing these actors. I can not really say that I am a huge fan of any of them but I have liked them all at some point for one reason or another. They are movies, they do not need to be made. While hollywood is backwards compared to how we live our life I would like to think that there are producers, writers, directors and film studios that know what they are doing when casting and creating movies. The Green Hornet? I could care less if it was ever made but I might enjoy it because it looks like a fun movie. Sometimes I can stop taking cinema so seriously and just simply enjoy what is before me.
It is sad that movies are made for general audiences and is especially sad that studios do not care to cater whatsoever to those of us who are passionate about things like this. It is what it is, we all have our opinions and tastes but to really go as far as saying Will Ferrell or Jim Carey do not deserve to be where they are? Did you ever see SNL or In living Color? I think that they have worked their asses off to get where they are.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 11/12/2010, 8:35 AM
Those films showed that these guys were willing to take a risk and temporarily move out of their comfort-zones (and for that I WILL commend them), BUT it does not prove that they can ACT! Notice that when they all fell flat on their @sses, they went back to what they KNEW to be safe! An ACTOR looks for roles that challenges their ablities and skills. These guys THOUGHT they could 'act', and when they realized that they didn't have the skills needed to do so, they went back to their "same-ole', same ole'" .

I'll agree, they have an audience (abet a SMALL one as the numbers clearly show). I am not one of them, and apparently there are others on this site who would agree with me. And as for the 'bigger picture', those numbers are horrible!
loganoneil
loganoneil - 11/12/2010, 8:49 AM
How about we chalk this up to 'agree to disagree'? And for the record, I LOVED 'In Living Color' (Jim Carrey not so much...) As for SNL, aside from a few sketches here and there, in my opinion it hasn't been funny in over 25 years - but that's ANOTHER discussion... (LMAO!)

loganoneil-I was kind of disappointed that while listing off comedic actors that were one trick ponys, you didn't list off Jack Black. If I was going to bag on any one of them it would be Jack Black. Maybe Vince Vaughn, I thought his rants were so funny at first and now I am really irritated by him even in the movies that I once liked him in. Danny McBride is funny as shit on Eastbound and Down, but its really the tone that Jody Hill has set for the show that I really appreciate. He did The Foot Fist Way, Observe and Report, and now Eastbound and Down. He has a way of taking something absurdly funny and showing how sad and pathetic it is at the same time. Like Rogens character in Observe and Report. He plays his normal stupid self but he makes him look more pathetic and delusional rather than a harmless funny everyday guy.

To be honest, when Rogen first popped on the scene, I didn't mind him. But as he progresses (or lacko f progression) I find that he plays the same character in every movie. To put him in a starring role in the Green Hornet is blasphemy.

For my tastes, i mostly agree with Loganoneil. With some exceptions like Ferrel. I find some of his movies to be hillarious while others are down right horrid! My faves of his are Blades of Glory, Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Night at the Roxburry and Step Brothers. But the whole lot of the rest are stinkers to me. And you certainly hit the nail on the head with Vaughn. Can't stand him. But McBride takes the cake. There is not one word that would ever come out of his mouth that could ever make me snicker, let alone NOT reach for a bucket. He is the epitome of NOT FUNNY. As for Jack Black... here's a pony with a few tricks that he doesn't often get paid to use, unfortunately. The man was brilliant in High Fidelity, Tropic Thunder, Kung Fu Panda and School of Rock but anything else he ever did never showed us the skills he does have. They all relied on... stupidity. But even though i tend to give him a break for the few performances i've truly enjoyed of his, he most certainly is part of that godawful list!

thekabsin- With Rogen, for me it's not a matter of if his film is fun or not. It's his ass uggly mug that takes me out of every damn film he's in. Watching a film where he actually headlines is absolute torture to me! That goes beyond the film's plot and even his own acting skills if he ever had any. I don't know, i never was able to force myself to notice them. The ONLY film he didn't bother me in was 40 year old virgin. Must have been the beard.
