DEADPOOL Star Ryan Reynolds Explains Why He Never Shies Away From Poking Fun At His GREEN LANTERN Role

Promoting Free Guy during a recent online press conference, Ryan Reynolds opened up about his decision to poke fun at Green Lantern, reflecting on one Deadpool joke, in particular. Check it out...

Ryan Reynolds has never shied away from poking fun at some of his past mistakes as an actor, and Green Lantern is one role that he frequently takes aim at in a tongue in cheek way. While the 2011 movie certainly has its fair share of fans, it was also something of a disaster, and there was plenty in it to make fun of (the visual effects are somewhere near the top of that list).

During an online press conference for Free Guy, Reynolds made it clear that he's laughing at himself, not at those who worked hard on a blockbuster like Green Lantern

Deadpool featured quite a few references to the DC Comics movie, and Reynolds elaborated on why he had Wade Wilson point out that he didn't want to be put in a certain type of suit. As it turns out, that was a line the actor came up with himself while they were working on the R-Rated box office hit.

"I wrote it into the Deadpool script, I think where my character says something like, 'Please don't make this suit green or animated,' when he's being shoved into the superhero factory or whatever," Reynolds recalled. "And I noticed that it felt good to shine a light on that for a second."

"So I don't know, it's just something I've always done, but the most significant thing that's ever happened in my career is laughing at myself always. Like, since the start of the work. And there's plenty there to laugh at. Everybody has their own...you lay in bed at night and you think, 'Oh God, this thing I did was so awful or silly or ridiculous.' I think that's got this fuel for lots of stuff."

Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe will give Reynolds plenty of chances to poke fun at Fox's X-Men franchise, and with rumours swirling that he's signed a huge deal with Marvel Studios, we'll hopefully see that become a reality sooner rather than later. Right now, his future as the Merc with the Mouth is uncertain.

Makes sense, although sometimes he goes too much overboard with poking fun at himself. His youtube channel is pretty funny however, especially when Hugh Jackman is on board too.

@BlackBeltJones - Yeah, it's nice to see he can laugh at himself. But the Green Lantern Corps in general are great characters with a lot of strong material. Just a bad movie.

@KWilly - exactly. Part of me thinks his continued bad light brought upon that movie gives GL a bad rap to those who don't know much about him.

Obviously, fans like us can sort of separate that, but I think its about time to close the book on it as GL tries to make a comeback.

I think it’s a little tired at this point with his constant ragging on gl.Yeah I look at it now and it’s not great & has plenty of areas which should have done better but at the time I went and saw it and I didn’t leave the theater thinking I just saw a terrible movie.I actually enjoyed it and definitely wanted more.As time goes on u see it doesn’t hold up well especially with the suit but he acts like it was as bad as say ghost rider 2 or the fantastic four reboot

He's done a lot worse than Green Lantern. This is actual footage of Ryan Reynolds poking fun at Green Lantern:

Movie was such a wasted opportunity. The costume was not the biggest problem, the script was. It had a great cast as well with not much to work with. I remember reading ahead of time that this was going to be like a Star Wars superhero movie. I don’t absolutely hate it, but it wasn’t what it could have been.

This film was awful on multiple levels, and Reynolds portrait of Hal Jordan was shallow, unsympathetic and ridiculous. This stupid film doesn't change the fact that Green Lantern is a great sci-fi concept, and I hope we can see a well-developed Green Lantern film -- so Reynolds can finally keep his mouth shut.

You know, he really should be grateful for that movie because it's where he met his baby mama.
