Quentin Tarantino Liked Lots Of CBMs Last Year; Including GREEN LANTERN

The iconic director has released his best of 2011 list, and it appears QT was a big fan of several high profile comic book and sci-fi flicks, including a few that were not lovingly embraced by the CBM community..

I think most of us will agree that Quentin Tarantino is at the least a very good film maker. Personally I happen to think he is among the best, but that doesn't mean I always agree with his taste in movies. His best of lists always have a couple of strange or controversial choices and 2011's is no different. There are undoubtedly a few (in fact I would say most are) great films below. Perhaps he tagged on The Three Musketeers at the end there for a giggle. Anyway, the CBMs and other related movies we covered last year are highlighted, be sure to give your thoughts in the usual place.

Tarantino’s Top Eleven

1. Midnight In Paris
2. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes
3. Moneyball
4. The Skin I Live In
5. X-Men: First Class
6. Young Adult
7. Attack The Block
8. Red State
9. Warrior
10. The Artist / Our Idiot Brother (tie)
11. The Three Musketeers

Others he liked (no particular order)

50/50
Beginners
Hugo
The Iron Lady
Carnage
Green Hornet
Green Lantern
Captain America

The Descendants
My Week With Marilyn
Fast Five
Tree Of Life
The Hangover Part II
Mission Impossible 4
The Beaver
Contagion
The Sitter
War Horse

It seems that the man is a fan of the glorious CBM at any rate, although conspicuous by it's absence is Marvel's Thor. Maybe he didn't get to see that one? Tarantino has only dipped his hand in the genre once when he directed a segment of Robert Rodriguez's Sin City, but many fans have longed to see him helm a full comic book based movie. He was rumored to be interested in Deadpool at one point but even if that were true, obviously nothing ever came of it. Maybe one day we will see one. If so which property do you guys think would suit him best?

I'd give the 2011 movie year a rating of 7.5/10 for all of the movies that came out. This year should be no less than a 9/10.

GL had it's moments, it also had Ryan Reynolds doing a little jig when he sees himself in costume. Instant fail? Yes.

Cos of Midnight In Paris, which I loved..and I'm not really sure why! Maybe I DO have some romance left deep down in my stone cold heart.

I'm a big Tarantino fan. I'm probably one of the few who considers Reservoir Dogs superior to Pulp Fiction.

Nah, I wouldn't even mention those movies in the same sentence. Yeah BB had flaws, but even at it's worst it was better than GL at it's best imo.

Stil, I said as much in my review and I still maintain that for about the first 30/40 mins GL was a decent movie. I sat there happily thinking maybe the critics got this one wrong. I think it was actually just after the jig that I realized something was very wrong and they had decided to make a comedy instead. And not a funny one.

Well... we all have our own taste. Personally i havent seen half of those movies so i cant tell are they good or bad.

I would love to see Tarantino´s take of 100 Bullets or Loveless.

You remind him of a 14 year old Korean girl. I'm surprised he didn't adopt you, then marry you afterwards Tea.

I actually haven't seen a lot of the highly rated movies on those lists.

Moneyball, The Decendants, to name a few.

But I've seen The Beaver and 50/50 and I'm glad to see them get a mention

And tell me Nomis, would you say you were in the majority or the minority with that opinion? Now ask yourself which group would define who should be thought of as iconic or not?

crap taste from a one-trick pony director

and yeah, i agree with Nomis... 'iconic' is not the right word... maybe 'lucky'

my friends that saw Green Lantern that didn't know the source material hated it. my friend who did said it was decent (but he also has strange taste in film so he doesn't count).

@alex -- 100 Bullets is too epic. You would have to pick one of the larger subplots and go with that. Probably best as an ongoing series. "Scalped" might be better - best comic I've read in a while.

As far as Tarantino goes, he is a bit of a one trick pony but writes fantastic dialogue, especially intense conversations between interesting characters. i don't think he would be a good director for a james bond movie or something like that.

Nomis, yeah I'm aware people hate him..but you and I both know they are in the minority. I am also aware that not all of his techniques and styles were pioneered by him, and in some cases he does downright rip off other movies (he has never denied it), but he is still a fantastic film maker by any standards imo. By the way, I think the dude is a complete tool!

I love most of Tarantino's movies (I hated Deathproof and thought From Dusk Til Dawn draaaaagggggged on despite its thematic content), but I have no delusions about the man in question. He is a douchebag.
