30 New And Intriguing GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Details Revealed From Set Visits
Minor spoiler warning! From something in The Collector's collection appearing in future Marvel movie(s), to Nebula's "holy" mission, hit the jump and check out new Guardians of the Galaxy info
Just a couple hours ago, the embargo lifted for many journalists to report what they saw and learned when they visited the Guardians of the Galaxy set back in September. While there are several interviews with the cast, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, and Lee Pace, Collider and HitFix have compiled over 80 key details about the Marvel production. However, you can find the most interesting things below, and some of them enter spoiler territory.
-
We learned that certain scenes will feature selected characters from the Marvel cosmic universe. They said on set that Guardians will have the most live-action Marvel characters in a movie by a factor of four. Some will be mentioned by name and some in the background. They said fans will have a field day. Every character had to be cleared with Marvel legal.
-
There is a fight sequence in the movie involving two characters that they’d practiced for over two months and days before they were set to shoot, James Gunn informed them it wasn’t working and they had to redesign it. When they finally shot it they did it 22 times and it was the last take they got it right. The entire fight was done in one take.
-
We will get a bit on Rocket’s backstory, but we don’t get into the Kree backstory in the film.
-
James Gunn calls the Collector the most unique character in the film. Plays a very important supporting character.
-
Xander is a big and bright world where we meet Groot and Rocket for the first time. It’s also the world where some of the team gets arrested.
-
Xander is an almost futuristic Earth located on the other side of the galaxy. It’s where people travel to for safety and it’s the center of the universe on that side of the galaxy.
-
Some of the things the Collector has in his collection will “definitely” be involved in future Marvel movies. His collection looks like the cubes filled with monsters and creatures in Cabin in the Woods.
-
Gunn's packed in more insane Easter eggs during this one sequence with the Collector than I think anyone will recognize the first time through, and there are some great characters who haven't even been teased yet in public.
-
The ending battle scene is the biggest in scope of any Marvel movie.
-
The MacGuffin of the movie is the orb from the beginning of the film. There is more to this orb than meets the eye.
-
The Dark Aster is Ronan the Accuser’s ship. It’s 3 miles long. The ship is involved in huge action scenes.
-
Necrocraft’s are thousands of smaller ships that surround the Dark Aster.
-
In the production art that we were shown we saw a picture of Ronan bowing to Thanos.
-
Drax will only wear trousers in the film and he’s also a knife man.
-
Gamora is the last of her race after her planet was destroyed.
-
The Nova Corps are run by Glenn Close (Nova Commander Rael) and she’s the most powerful woman in the galaxy. John C. Reilly (Rhomann Dey) works for her.
-
We might see a member of the Kree in the prison sequence.
-
Rocket builds a big weapon that Peter Quill uses in the 3rd act of the movie. It’s like an atomic bomb that works in a small confined area. I believe it’s called a Hadronic Forcer. The bomb is small enough to be stored in a backpack.
-
The production built a huge gambling table that is 21 feet long for a scene. It’s like a miniature Greyhound track with roulette. In this version of gambling you’re betting on the animals and the table has steam and flame effects.
-
Zoe Saldana said that she wanted her character to be pretty, which is something she normally doesn’t care about when doing a role.
-
It took almost 10 camera tests to find the right color for Gamora.
-
Drax’s motivation in the film is to avenge the death of his wife and daughter.
-
A lot of the comic relief in the film has to do with Drax.
-
Nebula is the daughter of Thanos. Her character is on a holy mission to get rid of the weak characters of the universe.
-
Gillan said she read Infinity Gauntlet before getting the role.
-
Groot can grow and use his limbs. He’s very powerful in the movie.
-
Rocket and Groot have a background before the movie starts and Rocket treats Groot like a slave.
-
Nebula and Gamora share a (sister) relationship at the start of the film, but that Gamora becomes disenchanted with living in service to Thanos, and when she leaves, it sets some of the film's primary events.

Knowhere is, as described by executive producer Jeremy Latcham, "the severed head of a celestial being. It's… become this mining town that's popped up around little bits of what you can mine." That includes brain matter and spinal tissue, and within the head, there is the equivalent of a Wild West frontier town.

Sakaaran is the name of the soldiers Ronan brings in. They wear masks and you rarely get to see their faces (they’re disfigured underneath their helmets as they are missing their nose and mouth). One of the really interesting things about this race is they can grow their armor, helmets and even their ships. It’s all organic.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opens August 1, 2014
