GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2.: James Gunn On His Freedom Making The Film; Which Guardian He Relates To

As far as superhero origin stories go, some films have enough trouble introducing one main character, let alone the five that director James Gunn had to establish in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Speaking at this year's Writer's Guild Festival, Gunn said that he had a much easier time making the sequel, Vol. 2, especially since he was free from the stress of the first film's introductory segments.

“On the second movie I had a lot more freedom,” Gunn explained. “Because the first movie did well and it was great not having to explain the five major characters to the audience in the first half hour, we just go straight into the story.”

Despite taking certain cues from the first installment, Gunn was insistent that the sequel remain distinct, rather than straying too closely to the formula of its predecessor. “This has to be its own thing and you can’t start making this a sh***y Xerox of the first one,” he said.

When asked which Guardian he related to the most, Gunn wasn't shy in admitting that everyone's favourite gun-toting raccoon held a special place in his heart. “Rocket’s character I relate to more than anybody; Rocket is me,” Gunn shared. “He has the anger issues that I have and he has the same inability to accept love that I have.”

In addition, Gunn also revealed that Star Lord (Chris Pratt) will meet his father, Ego The Living Planet (Kurt Russell), about 20 minutes into the film. Have you got your tickets for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 yet? The Marvel sequel hits theatres May 5, 2017.

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

I relate with Star-Lord the most. I mean, I was abducted by aliens as a small child and have been cruising around the galaxy. The internet in these highly advanced ships has been surprisingly shoddy.

Gunn is amazing! He is so creative, just a genius. Actually, I hoped he would direct Infinity War instead of the Russo's, but just because I consider Gunn as a real master of filmmaking. They couldn't handle the amount of characters in Civil War, and now they have to deal with a much bigger ensemble. Hopefully, Gunn won't screw up the extra characters in Vol.2 now I've said this, but I can't imagine he won't threat every single character with respect in his films.

@Unites - I would have prefered Gunn to direct aswell. While the I the Russos can balance characters (really needed in this film) their visuals are quite dull

Thats not to say they are bad visuals, its just everything feels a tad dull. I think with Inifnity War space should be represented the way Gunn portrays it. Instead of having a vast emptness (like star wars) put a large colourful nebula in instead.

I just feel the Russos are going aim more for a grounded tone which wont mix well with the visuals of space which have already been cannonised in the MCU by Gunn.

Wouldn't it be cooler if Star-Lord's father wasn't even revealed yet?
Nowadays, movies tend to reveal reveal reveal BEFORE THE DAMN MOVIE COMES OUT!

@Darlene1974 - The whole Ego reveal would be one of the biggest WTF moments of recent CBMs. Maybe they should've kept the exact nature Russel's role secret. But I feel we'll have quite a few surprises to look forward to still.

what the directors said about working with Marvel:

RUSSO BROTHERS (2014):

“We’ve never had more creative freedom than we had with ‘Cap 2.’ That movie is tonally very different from everything they’ve done up to that point. We shot it differently, we lit it differently. The violence was very aggressive. It could’ve been too aggressive for them.”

" it's been the most hands-off experience we've ever had, no question. And we were given the most creative freedom we've ever had, inclusive of our TV experience, where we've built ourselves up into a nice position of power in television."

JAMES GUNN (2014):

"Every step along the way I’ve been surprised by how much freedom Marvel gave me. So much to the point I sometimes doubted their wisdom in letting me do so much. It’s strange, my first draft probably wasn’t quite as funny as the second draft. They loved the humor, but I was worried about making a movie too funny. I naturally make things funny, I guess. I don’t want to mix genre and confuse people, but they were like, ‘We love it.’ They know how to make a hit movie, while I know how to make my kind of movie. I hope that’s the right path, so I kept going.”

RUSSO BROTHERS (2016):

"The most simple way I could put it is Marvel doesn’t come to the filmmakers and say, “Here’s what the next movie is.” They come to the filmmakers and say, “What is the next movie?” That’s very much the process."

JAMES GUNN (2016):

"Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2’ is the most personal film I’ve ever made by far. I had 100% creative freedom. Mostly 100% financial freedom to create whatever was in my brain. So there was a very personal relationship I have to it…. For 3 years I’ve done nothing practically but made ‘Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2’ from the writing through the pre-production, production and now the editing"

SCOTT DERRICKSON (2016):

"I’m perpetually awestruck that I’m getting to make this movie," Derrickson tells the magazine. "I keep waiting for the knock on the door when somebody says, 'This movie’s too weird, we can’t make this.'"

"I'm asked about this often, so let me state for the record that I genuinely LOVE working with Marvel."

"Why has Marvel Studios had an unprecedented run of quality, big-budget successes? The answer is in the motive."

TAIKA WAITITI (2016):

"I feel like a guest in Marvel's universe but with the creative freedom to do what I want. I think this is the most different Marvel movie to date and one of the biggest,"

"In terms of the studio thing, these people don't act like a studio. They're cool, smart storytellers. I've been enjoying hanging out with them."

Waititi said, adding that without Marvel CEO Kevin Feige's trust and hands-off approach as an executive producer on the project, he probably couldn't have done it.

PEYTON REED (2016)

“One of the nice aspects of working at Marvel is the interaction with the other directors and writers. In Hollywood, directors don't always hang out with each other. We're generally too self-absorbed, egotistical and focused on our own things. So it's cool to see Taika {Waititi} or Scott {Derrickson} in the hallway and talk about whatever. It's fun to have a meal with James {Gunn} and discuss what we're doing. It's awesome to have Ryan Coogler in the office next to mine. It taps into that Marvel Bullpen fantasy for me.”

RYAN COOGLER (2016):

"I’m excited... I feel really fortunate to be able to work on something I’m this passionate about again."

"t’s going to be my most personal movie to date, which is crazy to say, but it’s completely the case. I’m obsessed with this character and this story right now, and I think it’s going to be very unique and still fit into the overall narrative that they’re establishing.”
