GOTG VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Says He Was "Concerned" About Adding The MCU's First F-Bomb

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 features the first F-bomb in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and director James Gunn has now admitted that he was concerned about leaving it in the movie...

Before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hit theatres, one of the officially-released promo clips revealed that the movie was going to feature the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first F-bomb.

In the scene, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) rushes the crew into action as they prepare to face-off against The High Evolutionary's forces. When Nebula (Karen Gillan) has some trouble getting the car door open, Quill walks her through it, before getting increasingly frustrated and telling his teammate to "open the f*cking door."

Director James Gunn has previously confirmed that the addition of the swear word was not planned, but he left it in after deciding that it made the sequence much funnier. Now, the filmmaker has admitted that he was somewhat apprehensive about keeping the F-bomb and was sure the studio was going to make him remove it.

"We put it in the cut and it was just so damn funny. And I was like 'Oh man, Disney is going to make me take this out, aren't they?,'" Gunn tells to JOE.ie. "They've never made me do anything. And I'm like, 'This is the first time they're gonna make me do something, and I'm going to be bummed out.'"

As it turns out, Gunn had no reason to be concerned, because Kevin Feige was fully on board with the bomb!

"I said 'What about that f-bomb?' And [Kevin Feige] is like, 'Well, you know, the Russo brothers had one in ['Avengers: Endgame'] at one point. And, you know, it got a big applause, but at the end of the day, the Russo brothers were like... They didn't want that to be their legacy. And Kevin said 'if you want that to be your legacy, then sure.' And I said, 'Kevin if you think you're scaring me away instead of just enticing me even more to put this in the movie you're crazy.' And so that's how it happened. And then he laughed his ass off."

You can check out a censored version of the scene below.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now in theaters.

It felt spontaneous and unscripted, which was exactly what made it work.

@DrReedRichards - I'm irrationally giddy about the word "fvcking" being in an MCU film. Lol

The last scene of the last movie vestige of the garbage DCFU Snyderverse(AquaBro 2?) should be Snyder standing next to a WB studios dumpster with all his stuff in it on fire.

And then he says, "FACK!"

Fade to black....

It worked. And even the humor in that scene didn’t bother me. It reminded me of a family bickering in a car.

The couch scene wasn’t as bad as the trailer made it out to be either. The only incredibly cringey joke was the communicator mix up in the Amongst Us suits. Now that was dumb and went on too long.

In fact, this movie could have been even better had they cut that entire pointless Orgocorp sequence. That was the low point of the movie for sure. And they had to go on a second fetch quest after that fetch quest didn’t give them what they needed. Gunn could have had his wife and friends cameo in other parts of the movie and just cut that whole part out, especially the silly suits the security team was wearing.

@mountainman - I think it was just a reason to get Gamora to join the team without it coming off as rushed and tasteless. It made sense that Gamora left Earth with the Ravagers and has access to a wide array of Intel.

@SonOfAGif - That tracks. It was just the lull in an otherwise very good movie. I’m still a fan of it overall, but that sequence did bring it down a smidge.

@mountainman - Really? I enjoyed that sequence a lot, specially the part with Peter and Gamora.

@Polaris - The elevator conversation was good, but the communicator joke was the worst one in the movie, the security guard suits looked so dumb, and the action and entire reason they went there seemed like a waste of time.

Overall still liked the movie a lot but I was so bored during most of that sequence.

@IcePyke - Exactly what I was thinking. How is everyone forgetting this scene with Gary Shandling? First F-Bomb by a main character - sure…but not in the MCU.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 5/10/2023, 9:20 AM
@CookieHound - Because that was censored in the movie.

@IcePyke , @CookieHound -

It was beeped, guys. It was censored because it was viewed as a news broadcast on a TV screen. Same way Fury's "Motherf-" was cut out short, just like May's and Peter's "What the f-?!" at the end of the first two MCU Spider-Man movies.

It's clearly hinted at, but it's not explicitly heard, so it doesn't really count.

@IcePyke - Because it was censord in the film, this is the first uncensord F-Bomb in the MCU, unless you count the Netflix shows, they had a few F-Bombs...

I don't know if it was just the italian dub, but it had A LOT of swears, definetely not just one equivalent of a f-bomb. Surely more profanity than any other MCU movie. They probably adapted some of the minor english swears with something much stronger in italian.

Polaris

It's funny cause the spanish dubbing has had the equivalent of f-bombs since the beginning so I didn't even notice at the cinema. Like in civil War Spider-man is like "holy shit" but in spanish he says "f***ck" and nobody bats an eye.

SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 5/10/2023, 9:40 AM
It was funny because of how stupid the Guardians can be. Nebula was so frustrated with Drax and Mantis the entire movie for their stupidity and Quill was just as annoyed with Nebula. And I think what makes it even funnier is how Nebula couldn't open a human car door but bragged about being about to drive the car. Lol

I didn't mind it, but if Star Lord is going to swear like that--so casually, naturally, and in such a mundane setting--then he would be swearing all the time. Which meant it did feel a little out of place.

My thing is... 1) The scene wasn't even all that funny. I spotted a few different scenes that the F-bomb would've been better utilized.

2) I do wonder why it took so long for Marvel to use an F-bomb. Not complaining, just wondering.
LeonNova

When I saw it with my friends, they commented about how Gamora really would’ve said “F you guys” instead of “Screw you guys” in that one scene. I chuckled because I knew the F-Bomb from quill was coming up.

It's going to be funny when Deadpool comments on how he is only allowed to say one F-Bomb due to the PG-13 rating and has to carefully use it at the right time. And then he just randomly blurts out "F***" at the most random time and all the others heroes just turn and look at him in confusion.

I really wish Disney hadn’t made Gilroy cut the f-bomb out of Andor. It would have been a first for Star Wars and it would have had a lot more meaning than a joke like this.
Toonstrack
Toonstrack - 5/10/2023, 12:23 PM
@CassianAndor - that would've completely taken me out of the scene. Glad it got cut.
CassianAndor
CassianAndor - 5/10/2023, 12:41 PM
@Toonstrack - It might have taken me out a bit at first just from the surprise of hearing it, but I think that evocativeness is exactly why it would have also made the scene feel even more powerful.

Not to mention people would still be talking about it, and I only see bringing more attention to Andor as a good thing.
