James Gunn Updates On GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 And The Possibility Of Fox Characters Being Included

Marvel Studios may be holding off on revealing what's happening with its Phase 4 slate but we know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is in the works and James Gunn is currently hard at work on the screenplay. During a recent Facebook Q&A, the filmmaker confirmed that he's actually pretty far along in developing the script and seemingly right on track for that long rumoured 2020 release date.

"I'm more than a year into the process, so the script is far along," he reveals. "For many many
months I first write the treatment which is 80 pages or so with photographs. That turns into GotG - I'm now rewriting and making sure my rough draft works." Gunn was then quizzed on whether or not that impending Disney/Fox merger is going to change how he approaches the story as it could add some new characters to the franchise. "Not gonna happen in any major way. Too far along."

Gunn went on to confirm that he's started narrowing down the soundtrack and promised that we'll see some major changes when the team returns (whether or not those are a result of what happened in Avengers: Infinity War remains to be seen. "It's very, very, very different," he confessed. "Very different, but I won't say how! You'll have to wait to see the movie, it's a long time away."

So if the second Guardians was named Vol. 2 like the cassette Quill found at the end of the first movie, does that mean the title of the third will be Guardians of the Galaxy Zune?

@EarlChai - No, Gunn’s already say it’ll be Vol. 3

I'm really excited for this one! The Guardians movies have had some of the most emotional moments in the MCU. I really hope that Vol 3 deals with how the family handles loss and how they are grieving Gamora

Really excited for this one but I'm hoping Gunn moves away from his Guardians formula just a tiny bit. I still want the music, the (good) funny moments, and the emotional dynamics, but I'd like it if the overall tone is a little bit more serious.

My excitement for the Guardians was really tempered after Vol2, which is probably my least favourite entry in the MCU. I've not seen Infinity War yet though (I know, I know) so I wonder whether that will get me back in the mood to see more from them.

@FromACertainPOV - yea it's my least favorite as well followed by Thor Ragnarok

@FromACertainPOV - gotg vol 2 is also my least favorite marvel movie, and I liked the guardians in infinity war.

They still have the lamest moments in the movies though. You go from pure epicness... to a little scene where Drax acts like a retard. Star lord has some of the clingiest lines too. Apparently Gunn wrote the lines for the movie. No idea why they let him anywhere near the script, should’ve just let M&M deal with it.

@BloodyBed - On second watch Guardians 2 was better (I'm saying watch it twice, it's the movies JOB to be good the first time), but it became more obvious how poor the music choices were.

Too much treble, doesn't fit an action film. It was music for reminiscing with college friends or dying of cancer.

"The Chain" was the only song used correctly.

@fadersdream - I agree. The GOTG 2 mix tape was a fail, to be honest, and I love 70s music. Just didn't fit right.

@GeneralZod - Same.
"Fathers and Sons" was great for the end. Beautiful song, but it felt like songs from a feminine hygiene commercial.

I kinda hoped Gunn would go for Annihilation, but that just won't happen without Fox

He also said that they did a research and that Drax turned out to be the most beloved character of Vol. 2. To be honest, as much as I love James Gunn and respect him, I find Drax annoying in Vol. 2. He kinda ruined the movie for me.

I wonder (now that Quill has teamed up with people from his home planet) if this might mean it is earth-based?

I'm intrigued to see what Gunn puts on the GotG, Vol. 3 soundtrack. He said a few months ago he already has chosen 10 of the songs.

Here's a few suggestions I think would fit:
