A Quiet Place was one of 2018's surprise hits, grossing over $300 million worldwide and receiving rave reviews from critics and moviegoers alike. Its success has prompted the studio to explore a sequel and back in October, we learned that John Krasinski, who starred, directed, and wrote the first film,
will return to write the sequel.
It's obviously too early for details, but Krasinski did share what his vision for a sequel would entail.
But the idea for it is pretty simple. I’m writing now—I don’t have it fleshed out—but the thought that occurred to me, that really excited me about it, was that most sequels are about the return of a hero or a villain. You take this character that people loved once and you bring them back, and you have to create a new world around them. We have the exact opposite setup. We have the world, and you can drop whoever you want into that world and everyone feels connected to it. The reason I decided to go back, in the end, was this world is so rich, and it’s so much fun to explore. There are so many different things to see now. Everyone else in the world is experiencing this, so I’m curious to see what that looks like from another perspective.
This approach makes the most sense as the ending of the first movie seemed to pretty definitely wrap up the story arcs for the characters involved. Krasinski also admitted that he originally didn't want to do a sequel as it was never his intention to build a franchise based on the original film. But it sounds like he has an idea that he's excited about so hopefully it translates into a script that is just as exciting as its predecessor.
Earlier this year, screenwriter Bryan Woods also shared a similar sentiment, calling A Quiet Place "a fun world" with "so many stories you could tell."
"It's just really, at the end of the day, who are the characters in this and what does this situation mean to that dynamic?" Woods said at the time.
The sequel to A Quiet Place is headed to theaters May 15, 2020.
