And I have to say that I'm a bit worried for the theatrical outing of our "Sentinel of Liberty". The Wolfman by far is not a bad movie, but I'm sad to say that I kind of find it a little boring. I haven't watched the original version where this one was based from, so I can't really comment on how this stack up to that one. Though I'm thinking this movie might have followed that story closely because I had a feeling that the movie was a bit constrained. This might be due to trying to be reverent of the original film. But if that is not the case then its sad to say that for me this was a bit of a sad story telling. The movie was a bit sheltered not trying too much to go out of its comfort zone. The movie to be fair has a good pace, but the story is just so direct that there's not much mystery left for it hence I find it quite boring. There's are some good scares in the movie, the shock in your face, the growlings and our inherent fear to be eaten alive, but there are some movies who does this better, so that is not really special for this film. I wanted to like this film more, it is still a good watch though I think it won't be that memorable.
Actors are pretty decent, Del Toro gave the main character of Lawrence Talbot, much depth but I guess he is just stuck with a character which in the end is irredeemable(which you'll know instantly the moment he transforms), again with that knowledge there's really just one outcome for your character. I forgot the name of the female lead, I kept on repeating it last night, then while I was writing this I just forgot, didn't bother to check in IMDB. She's good in the role but there's not much chemistry between her and Del Toro's character, which made the outcome of the movie with less impact. Anthony Hopkins as always is great "I think as mentioned in this site" here's one guy we all could agree is unhateable. Which he proves here in this movie, and which gives me a good feeling towards his role on Thor as Odin. Hugo Weaving is Agent Smith on this film, I just can't shake that feeling the moment he spoke I thought I was watching the Matrix again. I don't know, when he was Lord Elrond in LOTR he was Lord Elrond but in this movie he was playing Agent Smith again. Sorry, I know Hugo Weaving is a good actor, hopefully he could diversify his acting in future movies.
A plus I could say about the movie is, how scenic it is, and I like the film Johnston used, it's a bit crisped, I like the silverish effect it has. That would work well with Captain America's War scenes, so I'll say Johnston knows how to bring period pieces which would be good for Cap. I saw some good action stuff as well that will translate well for our super-soldier, though watching the Wolfman, I hope Johnston has colored the Wolf's Blue and renamed it X-Men Origins: The Beast. The make-up are top-notch, just a little bit awkward on the transformation.
Well I think have to stop here. In the end Wolfman was not the best movie of the year, but by far its not the worst. I'm just a little worried Cap, but only a little. I still believe Joe Johnston will surprise us.
