BRIGHTBURN: Superman's Origin Story Is Given A Very Dark Twist In This Revealing New Trailer

The first trailer for the James Gunn-produced Brightburn got everyone talking, and now Sony has released a second look at the horror-tinged supervillain origin film, which features a lot more footage of the incredibly powerful, but inherently evil alien (Jackson A. Dunn) in action.

This movie is clearly a not-so subtle riff on Superman's early days in Smallville, and everything from the Man of Steel-like trailer titles to the hint of a red cape in the shot above points to a delightfully dark retelling of the iconic DC hero's origin - if he happened to be a murderous little SOB, that is.

Check out the new trailer below and let us know what you think. Brightburn also stars Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Matt Jones and Meredith Hagner, and is set to hit theaters on May 24.

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker of Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.

I feel this is somewhat the direction the "MoS" (Man of Steel) sequel should go

If WB went with the working title of "Man of Tomorrow", and focused on a dark descent on a Clark clone, turning into Bizarro, this would be the way to go

Have the story be modern/post-modern/semi-futuristic

Have glimpses of Krypton/Bizarro-world and show Bizarro's fracturing mind and alienation from humanity into something frightening

@BlackBeltJones -

One of the best scenes from Christopher Reeve's era is the battle between Clark vs Evil Superman in a scrap yard

I envision a modern horror film revisiting that premise

If someone were to write a script focusing on Clark's reconciliation with his Kryptonian heritage, in a way, where he comes to term with his Kal-El and the Kryptonian culture, in a Damon Lindelofesque unraveling of dense mythos with unresolved grander mysteries, it could be quite a challenging and demanding, yet frustratingly satisfying experience

Zod vs Superman scratched the surface on Clark's internal conflict, to much audience disappointment subjectively

This conflict should be deconstructed further, in a "Good Will Hunting" type of psychological character study on Smallville Clark, and his transition from Smallville into a greater Metropolitan culture, while really coming to terms with his extra-terrestrial origins...

A well-written characterization on Bizarro would really delve into his psychology the way Matt Damon and Ben Affleck unravelled Will Hunting's character

It would be career defining if Henry Cavill were to be tasked with providing a performance to counterpoint his doppelganger and expect a performance as naked as only Robin Williams could give as Will Hunting's psychologist

Christopher Reeve's really went all in, with capturing Clark's layers, even if deconstructing the various identities born from Smallville Clark (Metropolitan Clark/Kal-El[Clark's reconcilation with heritage & namesake/birthname]/Superman) went south, after Richard Donner's run (Superman 1 & 2)

I really wish someone with the talent could dissect Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" and construct a character study, that could attract Daniel Day Lewis in portraying a truly layered performance for a frighteningly complex and tragic take on Bizarro

I don't understand how this got made without them being sued. They had to get permission along the way, right? I mean, they're pulling dialogue. They're using the same color palette. They ripped the same font, for crying out loud.

@BackwardGalaxy - They had to have gotten permission. WB okayed all of this in some way.

@knocturnalzen10 - Superman is often dubbed being INHERENTLY GOOD, and maybe he is, but he is for sure a product of some of the GREATEST LUCK EVER in being raise by the quintessential salt of the earth people.

Superman is just a product of good parenting.

@BlackBeltJones - exactly , he's someone with limitless abilities it's what both parents instilled him on his direction and options..... he's the most complex character as from silver surfer in comics imo ..... those characters can do anything but the dynamic of each arc is more dove into idea of their choices and actually sticking to them .

example the JL animated series statement super man made when he said the word is made of cardboard

@Matador - the scariest part of that film was when he puked on that girl while she was....."going downtown" lol

That literally made jump in my seat haha.

I feel like people forgot about Chronicle. It was pretty good and I would have liked a sequel.
