Michael Myers will soon return to stalk the streets of Haddonfield, and Halloween Kills had its world premiere earlier today at the Venice Film Festival. Some early social media reactions found their way online soon after the screening, but now that the embargo is up, critics have begun to post their full reviews.
For the most part, David Gordon Green's direct sequel to his 2018 revival seems to have been fairly well-received, but it certainly didn't win everyone over. The cast, led by franchise icon Jamie Lee Curtis, has come in for a lot of praise, as have the extra gruesome kills. However, the movie has been criticised for defaulting to usual slasher tropes, and it sounds like the ending is more an abrupt set-up for the final part of the trilogy than a proper conclusion to this film.
You can keep an eye on the reviews as they're added to Rotten Tomatoes here (it currently sits at 56%), and check out some Tweets below.
Myers was defeated by three generations of Strode women in Halloween 2018, and while he appeared to burn to death, we all know you can't keep a good masked maniac down for long. Curtis, Judy Greer, and Andi Matichak will all return to stand in his way - and it sounds like they're going to have quite a bit of backup this time!
Kyle Richards will also reprise the role of Lindsey Wallace from John Carpenter's original Halloween, while Anthony Michael Hall will play Tommy Doyle, another character Michael terrorized in the 1978 film.
Minutes after Laurie Strode (Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie’s basement, Laurie is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, believing she finally killed her lifelong tormentor. But when Michael manages to free himself from Laurie’s trap, his ritual bloodbath resumes. As Laurie fights her pain and prepares to defend herself against him, she inspires all of Haddonfield to rise up against their unstoppable monster. The Strode women join a group of other survivors of Michael’s first rampage who decide to take matters into their own hands, forming a vigilante mob that sets out to hunt Michael down, once and for all. Evil dies tonight.
Halloween Kills slices its way into theaters this October.
