"It's gonna be a killer 2026."

Star Neve Campbell and director Kevin Williamson have announced that the seventh Scream movie - which is seemingly being referred to as Scream 7 (ditching the Roman numerals) for the time being - is set to hit theaters on February 27, 2026.

Campbell, who will return as original franchise final girl Sidney Prescott after skipping Scream VI, shared the following promo poster to her Instagram page (it's nothing too exciting, but does count as our first official artwork for the movie).

Plot details are still under wraps, but rumors have claimed that the story will revolve around Sidney (Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and some new characters defending Sid's family from some kind of Ghostface cult.

There have been conflicting reports about exactly how many masked maniacs will be targetting our returning heroes, but we have heard that there will be a "big time jump" following the events of the last movie, presumably to allow for Sidney's children to have grown to appropriate slasher movie age.

Previous reports have also claimed that this film will be at least partially set in a new town (i.e., not Woodsboro), and is being developed as the first instalment in a new trilogy.

Patrick Dempsey is reportedly on board to return as Sidney's husband, Detective Mark Kincaid, but that's yet to be confirmed.

Following the departures of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, It also remains to be seen if the surviving members of the "Core Four", Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding, will reprise their roles.

“Sidney Prescott is coming back!” Campbell posted on Instagram when her return was made official. “It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the Scream movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”

Campbell's decision to return has stirred up some controversy due to Barrera's firing over social media posts that Spyglass deemed to be "anti-Semitic." A lot of fans felt that Campbell should have shown solidarity with her former co-star and declined the studio's offer.

Barrera was asked about the situation in a recent interview, and while she declined to comment on Campbell, she did reveal that she would consider returning to finish Sam Carpenter's story down the line.

“I’ve learned to never say never, but also a lot of things would have to happen for Sam to come back. For now, next page, next chapter, and then we’ll see what the future holds.”

“It’s definitely hard, because I was just in such a cloudy state of mind, but I was very fortunate,” the Abigail star told THR. “I had a lot of support from the people around me: my team and specifically my publicists — they just carried me.”

"Following the latest Ghostface killings, the four survivors leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter," reads Scream VI's synopsis. "In Scream VI, Melissa Barrera ("Sam Carpenter"), Jasmin Savoy Brown ("Mindy Meeks-Martin"), Mason Gooding ("Chad Meeks-Martin"), Jenna Ortega ("Tara Carpenter"), Hayden Panettiere ("Kirby Reed"), and Courtney Cox ("Gale Weathers") return to their roles in the franchise alongside Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra and Samara Weaving."

@TheWalkingCuban - 4 is great, 5 was okay, 6 is good besides a few obvious stupid things. They're fun.

I'm telling you, they're gonna come full-circle and Sydney will be the killer. This'll be 7 films in, she finally snaps, and they turn the whole, traditional horror movie franchises on their heads.

@lazlodaytona - That's literally been the constant rumor that has come up every single time one of these films comes out. It's not a fresh take, and it would be lazy af and goes against everything about the character.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 10/2/2024, 1:54 PM
@ThorArms - Yeah, I'm the genius who started the rumor over a year ago.

@lazlodaytona - No I started it 3 years ago

@lazlodaytona - Dude why do you keep saying that? I remember when you first posted that theory and still to this day, it's lazy and it defeats the whole purpose of Sydney's arc as a surviver. Why would see go nuts putting everything she has, her family, her career in jeopardy??

@ThorArms - I did 4!
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 10/3/2024, 9:37 AM
@TheLight - I respectfully disagree. Lazy is doing the same thing over and over in the previous 6 films. And, not only is she always in danger, but her family will always be too just because of who she is; next killer or not.
Remember, eventually? Everybody dies. Even Nancy.
ThorArms
ThorArms - 10/3/2024, 11:27 AM
@TheLight - Literally this.

And also that theory has been around since the 4th one came out.

Do you hear yourself right now?

Dude, why else do you think they made Sam Carpenter??

I have only seen the first 3. Someday I'll probably watch the others.

By then they will be up to Scream 10.

@DocSpock - 3 and 4 suck horribly. I liked 5 ok and, unlike a lotta people on here, I really liked 6.

Now. it's Part VII: Prescot Snaps

lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 10/2/2024, 1:56 PM
@InJustWeTrustTHF - I SO hope so. That'd turn the whole horror genre up on its head for once.
TheLight
TheLight - 10/2/2024, 8:07 PM
@InJustWeTrustTHF - Then her entire arc would be pointless. We already has her half brother go crazy and tried to kill her. No need to add to the family tree.

Have not been super impressed with 5 and 6. To me, they feel like fanfiction with a modern glossy cinematography. Not that they’re particularly bad…they’re just missing the soul of what makes a Scream film.

With the last decade of horror delivering some downright incredible and iconic films, you’d think they’d have more material to work with in the meta commentary and messaging of the films. Scream is as much about a love of horror movies as it is about the moviemaking process. Horror has changed a lot since the 90s and has become a lot more cerebral and redefining of tropes. Where 90s was a reactionary decade of irony and nihilism, these days horror isn’t as reactionary as it is exploratory. Think of movies like Hereditary or Color Out of Space, or the Malignants and the Barbarians. Horror is thriving, and all these new Screams have to say is that fans are obsessive.

@SheepishOne - For some reason I actually liked 5 and 6 even more. I HATED 3 and 4 and loved the first two.

However, I completely agree with your 2nd paragraph. It's an amazing analyzation of the genre over the past 35+ years.

@lazlodaytona - I’m not the biggest fan of 4, but I love Scream 3. I understand the popular criticisms, but I really do think 3 is a misunderstood masterpiece.

Zzzzzz

I love Sidney but how many [frick]ing times can she outrun a ghost face? How many times can someone target her and have an actually decent motive? It’s so tired.

Spyglass had an interesting story to finish with Sam and Tara but the CEO being a goddamn Zionist ruined everything. I’ll probably go see this but I’m not really excited for it.

@TheLobster -

That's why there so many of us think/want Sydney to be the killer. It's the 7th film and she hasn't snapped yet?!? Total B.S.
Plus, her smoothly being revealed as the killer in the last act would be turning the genre completely on its head for once.
