THE MUMMY Director Stephen Sommers Reveals Why He Was "Insulted" By 2017 Reboot Starring Tom Cruise

The Mummy and The Mummy Returns director Stephen Sommers has shared his take on the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise and admits he was "insulted" when Universal failed to reach out him about the movie...

Released in 1999, The Mummy was a box office hit with $409 million worldwide (by today's standards, that would be roughly $767 million). Two sequels followed, as did a spin-off - 2002's The Scorpion King - which put Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on the map as an actor.

Stephen Sommers directed the first two movies, passing the baton to Rob Cohen for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Then, in 2017, The Mummy franchise was rebooted as part of Universal's short-lived "Dark Universe."

Tom Cruise took centre stage in what proved to be a rare critical and commercial flop for the A-Lister, and Sommers recently shared his thoughts on the movie while talking to The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com).

"No," he responded when asked if the studio reached out to him. "Actually, I was kind of insulted because the writers and director [Alex Kurtzman] of that Tom Cruise one, no one ever contacted me. I contact people if I was going to take over somebody’s thing. The third one, which Rob [Cohen] directed, it’s kind of my baby."

"I didn’t want to step on his toes, so I helped produce it. But I had nothing to do with the Tom Cruise one," Sommers continued. "They never contacted me or called me. I was doing other things, and it’s not like I sat crying. I just think it’s common courtesy."

As for Brendan Fraser's comments about potentially reprising his role as adventurer Rick O'Connell, the filmmaker admitted he hasn't been involved in any talks about a possible revival.

"All the people at Universal are new after I left. I don’t really know them, and they haven’t got a hold of me, so I don’t know what’s in their heads," Sommers said. "At the same time, it would have to be something really special. Of course, I would work with all of those actors again."

Finally, he reflected on helping make The Rock a star. "He was great. I had never heard of the guy, but then they sent me some footage of him, and he was just perfect. I had to shoot so fast with him because he flew into Marrakesh on Wednesday, and he had to be in Detroit for a WWE thing on Saturday."

"But boy, was he a trooper. As soon as the studio saw the dailies, the president of Universal was calling me up and saying, “You got to write a movie for him.” Somehow over the next week or so, I came up with this idea that became the Scorpion King movie."

There's currently no word on what Universal has planned for The Mummy franchise. While The Rock is revisiting some of his past ventures such as the Fast & Furious franchise and WWE, we're not banking on ever seeing a Scorpion King sequel...

The best thing about this movie is when the first trailer dropped and they forgot to add some of the audio. So all you heard was Tom Cruise's awkward screaming.

@IronMan616 - Yes.lol. this was the first trailer they released and the sound fx wasn't mixed correctly. They ended up redoing the trailer. But by then the memes started and they were too late. Great for a laugh tho.

@IronMan616 - tbh I'm not exactly happy the Dark Universe didn't pan out. I always loved those old films growing up. I wanted to see a modern take on the classic Universal Monsters. I guess chasing that Avengers bag wasn't a good choice for Universal. Too much, too soon.

@DarthOmega - Yeah, I love the Universal Monsters, have that collector's box set that came out in 2004 with the busts, right around the time Van Helsing was going to come out. I watch those every year around Halloween time. I was hoping Van Helsing was going to kick off a shared universe with the Mummy franchise back then before I even thought about superheroes teaming up. Van Helsing and Rick O'Connell, didn't know the exact timeline for those movies, but all I knew was that I wanted it.

Then that didn't pan out, and then came "The Dark Universe" and while I didn't hate the Tom Cruise mummy movie, I wanted a mummy movie set in the past, not in modern times to me that felt out of place, but then again, the old mummy/monster movies were set in their modern times. Yes too much too soon with them announcing movies before knowing if they were going to be hits.

I mean , I don’t get what it is to be insulted about since he didn’t create the concept.

There have been many takes on the Mummy throughout the decades with different filmmakers so this was just one more with new characters in a new world…

If they were continuing Rick , Evy’s & co’s story then I could understand him being upset since he created that version of the franchise.

Anyway , the 2017 one was sadly a dud anyway so it doesn’t really matter lol.

@TheVisionary25 - right. I agree in principle with his notion that you should reach out to the former people just as a courtesy, but at the same time, his movies weren’t the original mummy movies, so it wasn’t really his solely.

Stephen Sommer’s Mummy rankings (favorite to least)….

1.The Mummy
2.The Mummy Returns
3.The Mummy:Tomb of The Dragon Emperor.

Universal: We're going to build a "Dark Universe."

Tom Cruise: Hold my beer.

@BillyBatson1000 -

They could have built such a cool Dark Universe too.

My dream Dark Universe would have been Brenden Frasers character from The Mummy as the focal point, and have him be the thread tying together the movies, he could go up against the Wolfman, Dracula, The Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde, hell they could have even done some fancy footwork and got Van Helsing with Hugh Jackman into the mix.

I would have watched the shit out of that Dark Universe.

@TrentCrimm - Me too, I still love the (old-creaky original) Universal cross-over movies. And I still think it's possible. Just start from a different point/character. "Take my money."

No disrespect to the guy, but why would they contact him? It's neither a remake nor a continuation of his movie(s). Its a complete reinterpretation of the classic story. It's not like he invented the premise of reincarnated mummies.

@Humby - ...have you seen the new movie? It's basically a remake of sommer's movie. Right down to individual scenes and iconic visuals that are specific to the sommer movie.

The only thing I remember about this was not entirely hating it.

I need to revisit. Then again, The Mummy's Hand is my favorite OG Mummy flick because I love Dollar Tree comedy duos.

For what we got from this movie, I found it to be entertaining. Universal's plans to restart their Monster-Verse sounded good on paper. Bad execution, though.

To sum up:

Tom Cruise is short.

The movie opened up many great possibilities.

The movie was a snoozer, so very few people cared, so the whole thing died. The end. ZZZzzzz......

Really? You can't be satisfied that the remake was a failure in every way but have to still feel insulted? That matters as much as me feeling insulted by all the bad Stephen Sommers movies I paid good money to see. This man should be nowhere near a director's chair again.

Well its not his franchise

There was this little movie back in 1932 starring Boris Karloff

Then 4 or 5 more Mummy films fhat werenf sequels to if

He kind of took from all over those films

The movie sucked but what has he done worth watching in many years

This is as dumb as the writer being mad that Whedon didnt give him a co writing credit after Whedon completely rewrote the script
Fares
Fares - 5/13/2024, 12:21 PM
Yeah, I see no insult there. It's like a director who made one James Bond movie being mad at the director of a Bond movie that came after him.

That being said though, I unironically believe that the first Mummy movie he directed is one of the greatest movies ever made, period. After the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I have a hard time finding a movie that I enjoy more than Mummy 1999.

Dude, you didn't create this franchise. Or did seek permission from Karl Freund's ghost, before making your version?
