THE POPE'S EXORCIST Trailer Pits Russell Crowe Against The Ultimate Evil

Sony Pictures and Screen Gems have debuted the first trailer for "true-life" supernatural horror flick, The Pope's Exorcist, which sees Russell Crowe's holy man facing a particularly nasty demon...

Screen Gems (via FearHQ.com) has debuted the first official trailer for upcoming supernatural horror film The Pope's Exorcist, which stars Russell Crowe (Thor: Love and Thunder) as real-life demon-fighter father Gabriele Amorth, “the legendary Italian priest who performed over 100,000 exorcisms for the Vatican.”

Supposedly based on Amorh's actual files, if what we see in this gloriously over-the-top teaser is any indication, we're in for a crazy - if not particularly original - ride.

In the movie, Amorth is called in to investigate a case of demonic possession in a young boy, only to discover that the demon in question asked for him specifically. It also looks like the Pope himself might be part of some kind of satanic conspiracy.

Check out the trailer below along with a new poster, and let us know what you think.

Amorth, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 91, claimed to have encountered all manner of inexplicable supernatural phenomena over the course of his career. Whether he was telling the truth is obviously up for debate, but something tells us this retelling may have taken just a few liberties with his story!

Overlord director Julius Avery is helming the movie from a screenplay by Evan Spiliotopoulos, with revisions by Chuck MacLean.

The Exorcist director William Friedkin recounted the priest's tale in the recent documentary The Devil and Father Amorth, which is now available on various VOD outlets.

Fr Amorth's books are written in a very calm, considered manner, not sensationalised. I was raised Catholic so the theological side was expected while reading them. I was reading from a place of belief and while they're written in a factual manner, they scared the shit out of me. One story which really got to me was his conversation with a satanist who quietly appeared in his office trying to taunt or antagonise him and ended up confessing how he had become what he had become and breaking down.

I'm about to watch the trailer but the description made me think of the BBC TV series 'Apparitions' which I believe were also loosely based or influenced by Fr. Amorth's books.

That voice from the kid is hilarious. Not at all creepy like the original Exorcist movie voice. Reminded me of the beginning of Scary Movie 2. 🤷‍♂️🤣

"Inspired by..." pretty much means that other than using the actual names of people and/or places; they can feature Russell Crowe brandishing a crucifix-lightsaber all in the name of 'artistic license'. 🙄
