Can Iron Man 3 Beat the Avengers at the Box Office?

Iron Man 3 has only been out for 5 days internationally, but it has already grossed an estimated $195.3 million. For comparison, the Avengers made $185.1 million in the same time period. However, Keith Simanton, the managing editor of IMDB, doesn't think that Iron Man 3 can beat the Avengers: "It's a dark film. I think that's going to prevent it from being in the same $1.5 billion range as The Avengers."

But Simanton did have positive news for the threequel: the early numbers for Iron Man 3 show that "this is not being viewed as an Iron Man sequel as much as an Avengers sequel." Iron Man 2 was not received nearly as well overseas as The Avengers, and a closer connection between Iron Man 3 and the Avengers will likely translate to higher box office numbers. It will be interesting to see if other Phase 2 movies such as Thor: The Dark World benefit equally from a connection with The Avengers.

Simanton predicts that Iron Man 3 will make about $600 million internationally and $400 domestically, which could still be enough to propel it past the coveted 1 billion dollar mark.

Iron Man 3 hasn't only been popular in paying markets, though. Iron Man 3 is reportedly the 3rd most downloaded movie on BitTorrent last week, despite despite being a bootleg recording made with a camcorder.

Not Avengers, no.

And Batman Begins is the best origin movie, followed by Iron Man.. Hoping Man of Steel will top that list.

Batman 89 was a great movie and had a joker that same as the comics. Batman Returns was good as well.

They were fun movies for the time.

Then came Batman Forever & Batman & Robin.....these films remind me of IM3

At this point, I think it's hard to say what any movie will make these days. There have been a lot of surprises at the box office.

A lot of people didn't think Avengers and TDKR would hit a billion. Who thought Skyfall would hit a billion? Up until a few weeks ago, a lot of us thought GI Joe Retaliation would bomb.

IM3? Anybody's guess at this point. So, I'm just going to stop guessing.

comparing the two would be unfair. Avengers is a new whole being. you combine several franchises together into one huge movie. where IM 3 is merely a continuation of a movie series, where the character had JUST appeared in the teamup flick, just a year ago. so, i think having another portion of Tony Stark and his iron suits after only a year is actually a minus point in giving IM 3 the edge and chance to top The Avengers and other big competitions, this summer.

what you wanna see the numbers of are that of Man of Steel and Pacific Rim. THOSE TWO actually have the bigger chance in topping The Avengers at the box office, this year.
