ComingSoon.net has reported the estimates for the weekend box office and it looks like Iron Man 2 has had a big start internationally.

"Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios opened Iron Man 2 internationally a week earlier to give it more time before the World Cup starts on June 11th. The highly-anticipated sequel earned an impressive $100.2 million its first five days from 6,764 theaters in 53 foreign markets for a strong average of $14,814 per site. IMAX Corporation reported that the film grossed $2.25 million at 48 IMAX theaters overseas - an average of $46,875. That's a new record for a 2D release, surpassing 2009's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($2.1 million)."

Grosses were especially strong in the UK with $12.2 million, South Korea with $10.8 million, Australia with $8.8 million, France and Russia with $8.2 million, and Mexico with $7.3 million. That's 26% more than Iron Man opened to in 2008 and a likely indication to a huge US debut next weekend. Pre-release surveys actually indicate that it could start with around $150 million and it even has a chance at surpassing the all-time biggest opening weekend of $158.4 million for The Dark Knight.

Iron Man 2 is out now in the UK and will be released in the US on May 7th!

sebz - 5/2/2010, 2:04 PM
@Minotauro - that's because it's not cheating by charging extra for 3D screenings... If Favreau had of bowed to the trend and converted this for 3D, Avatar would be biting the Mark VI's SHINY METAL ASS!!

Winterborn - 5/2/2010, 2:04 PM
@Mino NO one thought that it could catch Avatar, it doesn't have and gimmicks to pull people in.
Anyways that's quite good, already recouped it's marketing costs. Now only 200 million more before it breaks even.

I haven't seen IM2 and I already know it has surpassed Avatar in awesomeness (let alone watchableness--the ability to watch a movie all the way through without wanting to blow your brains out)

@Shazam171

it's because Paramount doesn't want to lose money because of the 2010 World Cup,which is more popular worldwide than in the US.

I know how you feel. I watched Avatar a few days ago and it was a grind. It gets really boring at times mixed with characters preaching at us. I hated it. Nice effects though...

Why five days? Here in Brazil and in several other countries, the film opened on Friday. And these are probably 100 million the amount only on Friday and Saturday.

F**k Avatard! It's all flash and no substance!

I told everybody so! Cameron fooled everyone
with his stupid 3D! The story is ripped-off
redundant tripe! A movie is not flash! It's
good story and dialogue and characterization
and exposition! Avatard has some of the worst
dialogue I've seen in a movie and Lang's
acting was so hammy it wasn't funny! I mean not
funny at all!

Cameron should be ashamed of himself, obviously
stealing animation shots from another movie and
almost it's entire look! And then writing stupid dialogue
to boot! If ya watch Avatard without the
3D you see a badly written and acted (except for
Saldana) cartoon! The dialogue is cartoonish and
the plot is cartoonish and the acting is
cartoonish!

It's just a big flashy empty scam to get kid's
butts in the seats and of course their parents
with them! The box office is overbloated and
shouldn't be compared to other movies like IM2!

On the other hand IRON MAN 2 is well-written,
extremely well-acted, and well-directed...and
I can tell that just by the trailers cuz I'm
from the USA and obviously I haven't even seen
it yet!

Forget the negative naysayers! They're either
blind and stupid or they just don't know a
perfect movie when they see it!

I'm going to go see this movie as many times as
I have the time to! Just to help get it's numbers
up and hopefully beat Avatard at the box office!
Not because it matters but because I just want that Avatard
crap have it's butt kicked by a real movie,
an excellent movie, an original movie, a movie that
ain't a rip-off scam, IRON MAN 2!
DDD
DDD - 5/2/2010, 4:06 PM
And IRON MAN 2 doesn't need 3D to make it awesome!

Screw 3D, it's only a fad and has come and gone
over and over since it was first brought to the
market place decades ago! I hate 3D! It has
nothing to do with real movies! I find it
actually a distraction from the movie itself!
And I know a lot of people who feel the same
way as I do!

DDD, some of the criticism you level against Avatar is valid, but its still a damn enjoyable movie and thats all that matters to me. Iron Man 2? Same, but don't count your chickens before you've seen it dude, if Avatar's story is too simple, Iron Man 2's is faaaar too messy..in fact Fav could have taken a page out of Cameron's book on that one!

DDD @ LOL!

AVATARS a great movie, oh and what ROR said! : P

P.S. I've got no beef with 3D, after all people have the choice, thats all that matters, plus GREEN LANTERN is gonna rule in 3D!!!

SHREK 4 3D maybe not! ; P

Avatar is decent. A hell of an enjoyable ride, but that's about it. People either love it or hate it, I'm one of the few in between :)

Is it really that big a deal if IM 2 surpasses it at the BO? I don't think it is at all. If it's a better movie IMO, it's a better movie. Who cares about how much $ it makes? Well, who cares how much money it makes as long as it makes enough so that we get to see more Marvel films like it? If you think it's a superior film, I think that's all that should really matter.

JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 5/2/2010, 5:37 PM
Avatar was a great movie in 3D, but without? Average at best IMO. However, I cant say I care all that much whether Iron Man 2 beats it in the box office! I just want the movie to do well enough critically and financially to guarantee an Iron Man 3 and to keep up the chances of these Marvel movies all being successful enough to lead into The Avengers! :)
