Updates from the set of Iron Man 2 and fresh Mandarin news from Faran Tahir!

According to director Jon Favreau's Twitter, he spent the day working with Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow. "Back from lunch. More Tony and Pepper in the workshop."

Will The Mandarin play a part in the sequel? Sci Fi Wire has some quotes from actor Faran Tahir, who played the terrorist Raza in the first film, saying he's not in this movie, but a subsequent one's possible. "We're still talking about it," Tahir said. "It hasn't been finalized yet, so we'll see. Is he the conduit to Mandarin? Does he become Mandarin? Is it just another leader of the Ten Rings, you know, thing? All the allusions [in] my first speech [were] all about Genghis Khan and all that, which is Mandarin's thing, you know? So I think they have created the character and the storyline very wisely. To leave it as open as possible so whatever they need to, you know, pull from, they will."

i read an article a while ago, it was a casting call for iron man 2, and it called for people who could play mongolian mobsters or something like that, all i know is it said mongolian mobsters (maybe bodyguards) but thats a hint towards them playing and setting the mandarin up for the third film!

Chow-Yun Fat had his dim moment in the spotlight with Roshi. No more Fat. I'm sure they can find someone better to play Mandarin.

They gotta make him hardcore badass though. Maybe it's just me but never took the mandarin seriously as a bad guy. He just didn't makeout to be the best he could be

YOU OUGHT TO GET CARY-HIROYUKI TAGAWA TO PLAY MANDARIN..HE WAS SHANG TSUNG IN MORTAL COMBAT...PERFECT ACTOR FOR THAT, HE CAN PLAY IT REGAL, EVIL, AND HE HAS THAT SWAGGER ABOUT HIM THAT JUST SAYS MANDARIN.

Who's the Mandarin?
THEHAWK
THEHAWK - 4/16/2009, 8:50 AM
Mandarin is a needed character. He is more important to Ironman's storyies that Ironmonger. He is Ironman's most formidable foe.

I say they should have Chow Yun Fat to play him.

It would be great to have Mandarin! After seeing him, I'm really hoping he'll have his moment of awesomeness!

I don't know if this bothered anyone else, or just me, but Tahi said "you know" an annoying amount of times.

If MANDARIN is in the sequel, i reckon it should be a important part, though but a small part, like a cameo!!! Just for the Fanboys! (I know, important but cameo heh) ; ) As for that guy?? Didn't he die???

I dont see how wanting a certain actor for a role counts as being in any way juvenile! But it takes all sorts i guess

Dellamorte i think Jet Li would be a great Mandarin, the guy is a great actor aside from his martial art skills.

Okay cheers KEVEN @ An you got a point, don't need a big actor!

but isnt the mandarin supposed to be chinese, not arab???????????????
o and keven, who ever said we dont need a big name to play mandarin, the movies so far have been filled with big names, so it wouldnt really hurt, it would just add to the badassness

As long as we are all throwing in stupid ideas, i would like Angelina Jolie to play mandarin. Throw in a couple a love making scenes with tony stark and one lezzie scene with Gwyneth paltrow.... and maybe batman can crossover to the marvel universe for a brief appearance.

i just think it would be way better than whiplash.

I agree GUNSMITH, Carey Tagawa is a fine actor, and would fill the role nicely. But my pick is David Lo Pan himself: James Hong!
Check out the guys imdb film history, he has more movies under his belt than anyone I've ever seen!!!
Give him some long, white hair, throw on to mits worth of rings, and you've got yourself the penultimate MANDARIN!!

adamant877 - 4/16/2009, 12:54 PM
Keven: They're called the "Ten Rings" because they are a global terrorist organization, assburger! They even make a reference to the fact that they hold subsidiaries all over the globe.
It only makes sense to have someone overseeing their operations from behind the scenes, and honestly, the character of "Raza" was a bit of a thugish tool, I don't see him running this large of an operation... Now, the backwood (or desert-wood, as it were) operations of a small group of middle eastern terrorists, that makes sense!
The Mandarin is Iron Man's greatest enemy, and the idea of a "magic vs science" story is more intruiging than "Armored Bad Guy #3" standoff anytime!

CHANGING UP MANDRIN INTO ARABIAN IS REALLY RETARDATION..CHANGING BACKGROUNDS OF LONG LIVED AND BELOVED CHARACTERS IS MEANT FOR THE GUYS IN SMALLVILLE. DONT SAY JET LI, MANDARIN HAS RINGS, HE DOESNT DO KUNGFU, YOU WANT SOMEONE MORE REGAL, MAYBE ASIAN EVIL..AN DONT GET AN UNKNOWN, GET SOMEONE WITH ACTING CHOPS, ITS IRON MAN YOU GOT DOWNEY JR, SCARLETT JO, ROURKE, CHEADLE, ALL THESE GOOD ACTORS, KEEP THE JUICES FLOWING...
GUNSMITH
GUNSMITH - 4/16/2009, 1:33 PM
KEV-CARY TAGAWA CAN ACT, DONT BE A HATER...

joob234 - 4/16/2009, 1:33 PM
well kevin if u read my first post on this article, they mentioned people in a casting call to play mongolian gangsters, so..... thats kinda somewhat close to being chinese but, idk
adamant877
adamant877 - 4/16/2009, 2:47 PM
If not James Hong, I would have probably suggested someone like Ken Watanabe, but he has dealings with the "distinguished competition", so I don't know that he would want to be involved in a Marvel project... Then again, you never know.
Keven: Sorry for the assburger comment, that was uncalled for and childish. It just frustrates me to see that people cannot make the correlation in what Favrou was trying to make PAINFULLY obvious! The set of terrorists we saw in the first film were an independant cell. They worked solely on their own, but had funding from an outside source ("Ten Rings"). Now, typically you see terrorists that work on a religious or politically motivated basis (most times both), but every once in a while they end up recieving help from some surprising sources. (*Think like when the US gave Soddam Hussein all of those military weapons, and millions of dollars in foreign defense, and then turned around a decade later and blew his $#it up!)
It's not unheard of... In fact, it's more than that, it's common practice!
Welcome to global politics 101.

Yeah Cary Tagawa would be perfect. He's a hell of an actor. Just look at him in America Me. He was one of the Vatos, lol. Jet Li, he's too small and doesn't speak english fluent enough. Lo Pan, James Hong, too old now. Now if it was back in the Big Trouble in Little China days, then yeah. But even then he doesn't have the demeanor like Cary does.

I think since Liam Nissan played Raz Al Guhl, then we could have Nicolas Cage as The Mandarin.
