Today, I'll be reviewing IRON MAN 3. And if you're one of the two people on the planet who haven't seen it, (my brother included), you shouldn't read this because it has spoilers in it. Like, major spoilers. So, I'm doing this review because I just got my BluRay combo pack in the mail yesterday, (including "Agent Carter" One-Shot which I'll also be reviewing), and wanted to share my thoughts about the movie with you guys. Now, shall we begin?
One thing that distracted me was that it was set in Christmas. Now, it'll probably become a tradition to watch this every Christmas Eve or something, but I don't want to think about Christmas year round. I get that it's a Shane Black thing or whatever, but, it's distracting.
I was a little disappointed in the theatre when the opening scene (after the Switzerland scene, of course) was Tony testing out the Mark 42. I was hoping we would get to see sort of the evolution of the suit, but I guess they needed to just get that out of the way for more important stuff.
Rhodey, Rhodey, Rhodey. After Don Cheadle kept playing up the movie as more of a "buddy-flick", I was devastated to see how little he was in it. I mean, he got adequate screen time, but I really like the character of Rhodey and how he plays it and was expecting more. And at the end, when asks for a suit and Tony says something along the lines "their only coated to me", I got ticked. I doubt Tony Stark would let his best friend run around extremis soldiers without as much of a suit of armour. And speaking of suit of armour, Rhodey was barely in the Iron Patriot armour at all!
One thing people have complained about is how Pepper defeated Killian, not Tony. And I thought this was so anti-climatic. It would have been so much better for Tony to face his problems and knock 'em out. But, nope. Pepper Potts to save the day. Don't get me wrong, I love the character and Gwenyth Paltrow's portrayal of her, but Tony's the superhero. She's the girlfriend.
Here, we are going to be discussing the Mandarin twist. Now, if you are not mature enough to hear my opinion and accept it as my opinion, I advise you leave now. If you are mature enough, thank you. So, this is the first Marvel movie where for about five to ten minutes I was completely taken out of it. I had been looking forward to it for months, and I wasn't sure if I was liking it then or not. Then of course I got sucked back in and started seeing the reason why Black did what he did with the Mandarin. It made sense in the movie. And, even if you absolutely hated the twist, you have to agree Ben Kingsley pulled it off pretty amazingly.
Acting wise, everybody's really talking about Downey, Paltrow, Cheadle, Pierce, and Kingsley, but for me it was James Badge Dale who stole the show. He killed the role. HE WAS FRICKIN' SCARY! He owned every role he was in, and I'm surprised he's not more mainstream than he is.
Another thing people complained about was too much comedy in the movie. Whilst this didn't distract me, I can see how some people could've not been happy about it.
The movie has really grown on me since I saw it in theaters. Like, a lot. Initially, I liked Man of Steel more, but I like this way better.
I read an article on here about people determining whether people judge CBM's on how good they are, or on how true they are to the comics, and this is definitely one of the strongest solo movies Marvel has put out, but it's getting rejected by fans for the Mandarin twist. I feel like a horrible person because I can't remember who wrote the article, but if you wrote it and came across this review, comment and tell me:)
So, I'm going to give the movie a 9 out of 10 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed it. So, those are my thoughts, sound off below for what you think about it. Until next time, I'm EpitomeofAwesome.
