Kevin Feige And Shane Black On IRON MAN 3's Twist; Reveal Mandarin's Role In IRON MAN

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and writer/director Shane Black talk more about Iron Man 3's big twist with you-know-who and the former even reveals the role that the villain would have played in 2008's Iron Man. [MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD]

If you haven't seen Iron Man 3 yet, stop reading now. If you have, you'll know that the Mandarin in the Marvel Studios threequel is in fact Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian and not the decoy we saw Sir Ben Kingsley portraying in the trailers and TV spots (instead, he's revealed to be Trevor; a British actor with a serious substance problem). "Ultimately we do give you the Mandarin, the real guy, but it’s Guy Pearce in the end with the big dragon tattooed on his chest," director Shane Black tells Entertainment Weekly. "He says, ‘You don’t understand, I’ve been this guy since I was born. I’ve been embodying him in this [actor] that I’ve had proxying for me, but it’s really me.’" This decision has of course left some comic book fans seething; how does Kevin Feige feel about that? "It was nerve wracking," he confesses before adding why he thinks it's such a clever twist. "Shane really had a lot of great ideas about identity and about false faces and about anonymity."

As for how Black and co-writer Drew Pearce came up with the idea of the Mandarin being simply an idea created by Killian, the director added: "What if he’s sort of this all-things-to-all-people uber-terrorist? What if he is the myth, and in the end that is what we’re dealing with, a created myth that [a research group] has perpetuated and cobbled together using elements from popular consciousness. It felt like it said more about the world we live in than just having [Iron Man] fight another terrorist, as opposed to putting a spin on it that said something about the way we view terror, perhaps." When asked how they approached Marvel with such a controversial idea, he adds, "[It’s] okay to come up with these crazy things, these far out ideas...and they’ll fly. It’s just that the Marvel guys have to be in the room."

When talk turned to their initial ideas for the villain, Feige revealed that we would have seen a very different take on the Mandarin had he not been cut from Jon Favreau's Iron Man back in 2008. "He was in every Iron Man 1 script until about 10 weeks before we started filming. He was a contemporary of Tony Stark. He was younger. He was involved in business deals with [Stark.]" This means that the Mandarain would have been the one trying to secure Iron Man's weapon manufacturing capabilities and Jeff Bridge's Obidiah Stane would have been a sidekick of sorts to him. "We’d have revealed that Obadiah was the mole on the inside. But it did’t work. It didn’t work." Is this version one you guys would have preferred to see in Iron Man or Iron Man 3? Be sure to sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Loved the film... Can't shake the idea of what it would've been like to see Rhodes and Tony fight Fing Fang Foom and a alien tech wielding Ken Wantanabe...

With Marvel movies and DC movies I've come to think of them as alternate universes. That is why I love the comics and the movies in different ways. I understand where many people get their dislike of these changes, but I'm okay with them as long as the film is entertaining. At the end of the day, why do we read comics? Because they entertain us. Same goes for the movies. At least, that's my opinion.

What the they did with The Mandarin is unforgivable. I mean really Marvel that's the best you could do and even worse you let this happen? All of us have been waiting years for Iron Man to take on his most notable enemy on screen and this is what we get? It was a waste of using Ben Kingsley. I found this film quite boring and a drag. The action sequences were very well done though. This is probably one of the most disappointing movies that I have watched in a while. Such a shame. Hope Marvel redeems themselves with Thor 2.

Oh, and the film isn't over saturated with comedy. It has jokes, which are very funny, but they don't damage the film in any way. Many times I found myself laughing out loud in the theater, which happens rarely. Maybe that's just me. Dunno.

having obidiah stane as a sidekick to the mandarin would of worked as well, you could of done 10 rings terrorist group to start of with in iron man & start building them up over the next film(iron man 2) & then have them make their move against tony in iron man 3 with kingsely as the real mandarin & the ten rings terrorist group,it would of been awesome.

Worst twist in comic book history. Really hurt the film. They could have just had him be the real Mandarin and have a fight sequence between the two instead of that stupid scene where he is all drunk with hookers. So dumb.

This twist is like a comedian who tells a joke, but instead of waiting for laughter, he keeps saying, "Get it?" while laughing hysterically. No, we do not get it. Please get off the stage.

Not to turn this into another DC/Marvel pissing match, but...umm...what about the twist in TDKR? I mean, isn't that just as unfaithful to the comics as this was? I enjoyed IM3 - I actually enjoyed IM2. Do I think this movie was flawed at all? Yeah, probably, but every movie is. I say, leave it as it is - enjoy it. It may be the last IM movie we get.

"isn't that just as unfaithful to the comics as this was?" - no, since Bane was also a henchman of Ra's Al Ghul in comics, an he was also in love with her.

I'm tired of hearing the whining about not respecting the comics. It's not about respect, the comics change every outing. There is how many takes at the manderin, one in which he is a robot that stark builds. The manderin was always a lame character to begin with, how did they disrespect him?? By making him white? By making him breathe fire? Let it go

Peter Travers review says it all. This movie is just a hollow cash grab. Not to mention the massive plot holes and tired jokes.

"Either way fanboys saying that this is the same as if they did this too the Joker is infact a joke. Magneto, Thanos, Dr Doom, Loki, Venom, Ultron, Galatcus, and Green Goblin are the best villains Marvel has. Mandarin comes no where near them. Joker is a 5 star villain and threat to the DC universe, Mandarin is a 3"

Mandarin is as famous/not famous as Loki was pre-movies. Ask people on the street "hey, do you know who Marvel's Loki is?", and anyone who said yes, would know Mandarin too. Same with Ultron. You can make the case that Ultron and Loki are better villains, sure, but if Mandarin is a 3 star villain, they are too.

But any of those villains, changed THIS much, is not good. Fox did it to Galactus. If there's a villain who's a major enemy to a hero, and then the writer/director thinks "but wait, we -can't- use him because of ___, ___, and ___, so lets take his name and change everything about him, and say we're using him", then I say either pick a different villain, or even make someone up. Wanna know how to have avoided alot of controversy in Iron Man 3? Don't make Ben Kingsley the Mandarin, make him some made up guy. Then you don't change him to the point of making him unrecognizable, and problem solved

I know right. More people wore the suit than TONY did. Tony had two action sequences. The house and the end battle. The rest of the time he was controlling it with his mind.
