MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE Star Tom Cruise Reveals How Close He Came To Playing IRON MAN In The MCU

For years, rumours have persisted that Mission: Impossible and Top Gun star Tom Cruise very nearly played Iron Man in the MCU, but the actor himself has now weighed in on those claims. Check it out...

It's long been rumoured that a much earlier version of Iron Man was set to star Tom Cruise and potentially even include a talking toaster (or one that would transform into Tony Stark's armour).

Unsurprisingly, Morbius and Venom producer Avi Arad was overseeing that project, though it would later morph into the Iron Man movie released in 2008 starring Robert Downey Jr. That was where the MCU began, and while Downey made the hero his own, many fans have been unable to get the image of Cruise as the Armored Avenger out of their minds.

Even last year, there were rumblings that the Top Gun: Maverick star had shot a cameo role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, while theories continue swirling that Cruise will be part of Avengers: Secret Wars

In a recently resurfaced interview with Phase Zero, Cruise was asked how close he really came to playing Iron Man. "Not close, not close," he confirms. "I love Robert Downey Jr. and I can’t imagine anyone else doing that role..I think it's perfect for him."

As for whether he'd be open to playing a superhero, Cruise would add: "I look at a movie and I don't rule anything out. What's the story, what's the character, does it interest me? Do I feel this is what an audience would like to see me in? What can I learn and what can I contribute? That's really how I look at things."

Cruise is notoriously picky with his projects and doesn't allow his likeness to be used in merchandise, so that might close the door on him ever playing an Iron Man Variant.

We can't help but wonder if Marvel Studios might do something to make it happen, though, especially as those Ultron drones suggested Earth-838 might count an Iron Man among The Illuminati's ranks.

Would you still like to see Cruise suit up as Iron Man?

He wouldn't do it without a real flying suit working.

@CapA - Tom cruise: "you mean this scene with my character hurtling through the air and hanging onto fighter jets is all cgi? Hard pass!"

I can accept what little he said, but still would be nice to have him show up as Iron Man in a limited role as a variant in a future MCU film.

@Mugens - I can see this absolutely happening at some point... just like John Krasinski, who may never come back and play Reed again.

It could just be a quick "blink-and-you-miss-it" - type of gag. Like, Kang, Doctor Strange or someone opens bunch of multiverse portals and in one of them we see Cruise with a fake moustache wearing an Iron Man gauntlet.

@FinnishDude - it would be like the split second appearance of Brad Pitt in Deadpool 2.

I'd be good with never seeing Tom Cruise again

@Clungermania - thanks for asking. I feel as though he is scientology at this point and supporting his product is to aid and abet his cult. Churches should be taxed into non-existence and critical thought need be elevated and championed before we burn down our mutual house

@ProfessorWhy - Governments have killed and hurt more people in the last 100 years than churches have in the last 500. Governments don’t need any more money and power.

@mountainman - mosquitoes have killed more still. You miss the point because your immediate reaction is to dismiss it, so as to defend your own programming. I've said my piece, as you are welcome to.... but I will not engage this anymore here since I know I won't be changing any minds any more than one of you could get me to belive in The Jeebus Man

@mountainman - Exactly. Paedophilia is more the church’s area of expertise. Second to none there 👌🏻

@ProfessorWhy - I’m not religious I’m just good at discovering the biggest enemy out there, and it’s no churches in the modern world.

@Tasmaniac - Every pedophile should suffer the worst consequences known to man. Whether it’s the ones in any religion, or the exponentially larger number of pedophiles in public teaching. The numbers aren’t even close.

Show up as variant, but, in an awesome fighter jet that has the same abilities as a suit in iron man colors.

RDJ was great but I still think Cruise would have killed it. I’d still take him as an older Hal Jordan

@Twenty23Three - Cruise would have been a more accurate 616 Tony Stark. RDJ's Stark is really not anything like the 616 Tony Stark. He was 100% modeled after Ultimate Tony Stark. And he was awesome and filled that role perfectly. Cruise wouldn't have been able to pull that off as well and would have made way more sense as a more serious and less comical version of Stark.

Another ridiculous Josh article where he poses a question that is just going to be answered “no” in the article.

The better, less click bait and professional title would be

“Tom Cruise explains why he didn’t come close to playing Iron Man in the MCU.”

That way you aren’t tricking the reader into reading the article.

I’d appreciate your take on this @natebest

@TyrantBossMedia, @BobbyW - We may have different definitions of clickbait... Clickbait to me is misrepresenting something for clicks with the accompanying content *not* being related to the headline.

Compare that to a headline that encourages people to click and read content that *is* related to the headline.

In this particular instance, why would anyone write the headline as "Tom Cruise explains why he didn’t come close to playing Iron Man in the MCU."? There's absolutely no reason for anyone to *want* to read it as you already know everything from the headline...
TyrantBossMedia
TyrantBossMedia - 2/23/2023, 5:46 PM
@NateBest - But the answer to every question Josh posts is always "no" or "no comment" or something silly like that. That's click bait because the headline is written to make you think the celebrity offered something of substance or a poignant answer, and they never do.

That headline easily prompts you to learn more. I would want to know Why Tom Cruise didn't play Iron Man. Was it his choice? Was he not offered? Did negotiations break down? Was he going to but his schedule got full? Was he used like Robin Williams was used to lure in Jack Nicholson for Batman?

But you are saying that "Tom Cruise tells us if he was ever going to play Iron Man?" is the better question.....when the answer is just "No?"

Seriously?
