Storyboard Artist Federico D’Alessandro Teases New IRON MAN 3 Details

Federico D'Alessandro is the head storyboard artist over at Marvel Studios, and has worked on Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers. Here's what he had to say about Shane Black's approach to Iron Man 3 and much more.

Filming of Iron Man 3 has already begun, but the plot remains shrouded in mystery. Little is known about what writer and director Shane Black has planned for the Armoured Avenger, although the addition of several villains to the cast has left fans chomping at the bit for more information. Talking to Desde Hollywood recently, storyboard artist Federico D’Alessandro has revealed a few interesting new details on what we should expect from the threequel. "Shane Black is a master storyteller and the movie is in really good hands. The story delves deeper into Tony Stark’s character. By the end of the movie, audiences will have a much better understanding of what his fears are and what makes him tick. I think audiences are really going to enjoy that. There are also some really cool action scenes. It’s going to be a thrilling movie."

So, we have a slightly better idea of what to expect from Iron Man 3, but what is Shane Black like to work with? D'Alessandro had nothing but good things to say about his approach. "I learned how Shane Black manipulates audience expectations to keep them guessing and riveted in the story. I also learned how he creates true suspense to maintain tension throughout the story. He’s been a huge influence on my storytelling."

In the interview, D'Allesandro also looked back on what it was like to work with directors Joss Whedon, Joe Johnston and Kenneth Branagh , sharing his thoughts on how each of their approaches has affected his work. "Joss Whedon showed me how a filmmaker can inject his personality and sensibilities into a film. Joss is a very charming and hilarious man, and watching The Avengers I see his personality shine through in every scene. He also showed me how two characters having a conversation can be as entertaining as the best action scene. Joe Johnston is a very practical guy. He comes from old school filmmaking, and was a big time art director, so he taught me not only how to create a scene that needs to be grounded in reality, but also how to manipulate sets to serve the purposes of the storytelling. Kenneth Branagh is one of the most charming men I’ve ever met. His personality puts you at ease, which is wonderful, because a director’s personality seems to filter down through the rest of the crew. He’s also very open to other ideas and opinions while still knowing exactly what he wants, so that was a big lesson for me. I hope that when I direct, I do it like Ken."

I am just praying that they don't try to stuff too many villians into the story, like they have done with every Batman film ever made (Dark Knight included - Two Face was completely NOT needed). That would kill it for me.

@GAMBIT- AFTER THE AVENGERS EVERYONE WANTS TO SEE THAT HULK WITH RUFF AS BANNER WITH THAT INTERPRETATION ON THE BIG SCREEN..THEY NEED TO STICK WITH RUFF, TIRED OF THE MUSICAL CHAIRS WITH HULK ACTORS

I like what I'm hearing. I really hope I'm not as spoiled as I was for all of MS' other flicks, sans Iron Man.

@soberchimera61 A solo Hulk movie is not a definite thing. That comment about a new movie coming out in 2015 was ultimately an assumption, based on audiences' praised response to Hulk in Avengers.

ALOT OF CHARACTERS ARE COOL IF YOU KNOW HOW TO BALANCE EVERYTHING OUT AND GIVE A GOOD STORY, NOLAN CAN DO IT, WEDON DID IT IN AVENGERS..ITS POSSIBLE..YOU JUST NEED A SOLID STORY....SOLID.

@DC and Gambit True nothing's been confirmed, but I'd rather the heroes stick to their own franchises rather than popping up in each others. If you do that too much it kind of destroys the point of The Avengers movie. I mean its cool if Ruffalo has a cameo, but Hulk shouldn't team up with Iron Man again until Avengers 2.

GUYS, WAKE UP!!!......It is completely obvious that Dr. Banner is going to be working somewhere "on the first seven floors of Stark Tower, which is all dedicated to R&D... Hell, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he helps build the hulkbuster armor as a fail safe, given his cautious nature and new found friendship with Tony Stark at the end of Avengers (driving off together?)... It will most probably involve gamma emitting nanotechnology.... Yeah, the story will be about Stark/ Ironman, but Banner will be there for sure... It's gonna be government program rooted as well, as already verified by mention of the Extremis storyline, which only leaves me with one conclusion: THIS MOVIE WILL NOT BE A SET UP FOR AVENGERS 2.. IT WILL PROBABLY BE THE LEAD IN FOR THE TRUE HULK STORYLINE WITH AN AFTER CREDITS SCENE SHOWING GENERAL ROSS BECOMING THE RED HULK.... AGAIN, THINK "CONTINGENCY PLAN"... avengers 2 is already setup with thanos.. they DO NOT NEED AN IRON MAN 3 TIE IN FOR CONTINUITY... BUT, everyone is calling for the hulk now, so hmmmmmmmm....... So, Iron Man 3: Banner and Stark working together to fight government sponsored tech mission that collaborates with the Ten Rings organization that includes the mandarins nanotech advances... Banner sees this coming, as he always does, and uses newly developed hulkbuster armor to fight the governments relentless quest to tap into the hulks power that is now co-mingled with tech pursuits meant to take down stark....remember, Ross is a real prick!

MrsTonyStark507- i'll agree with you on the overuse of villains for the original films but not on TDKR. Two face was a very important character to the story and the overall trilogy....your troll colors are slipping a bit.

NathanV- having the Hulk in IM3 would detract away from what makes Iron Man great.
How great can the hero be if he needs a assist by the Hulk in his own movie?
Like when Spidey turns up in the first issue of someones new series. You know that series isn't going to last.

@nathan - I am quite certain that Jane Foster was going to be in the Avengers but Natalie Portman was pregnant and giving birth at the time of filming so she couldn't be in it. I am guessing that is why Josh did a quick little thing to explain her absence. Hulk on the other will not be in IM3. I can't see Marvel combining the main characters in a solo movie or otherwise it is not a solo movie. I just hope the actually do a solo Hulk movie.

Blah, blah, blah, everyone loves eachother.Same old crap from every movie in production these days.Next it'll be 'faithful to the comics','we're all comic fans' blah,blah,blah....Tired of this drivel.
On a different note lol...Marvel releasing two comicbook movies a year is going to kill this genre with the general public quicker than the Black Death killed Europeans. We've peaked with The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises in a single year. It's all downhill from there...Hollywood history proves me right.

No. Ironman 2 was NOT better than the original (my opinion). I saw the original three times in the theater. I saw the 2nd one via bootleg and stopped it halfway through. Tried to watch it on DVD, and again stopped it. I went a whole year without finishing it. Then finally concluded my viewing thinking, that movie sucked hard.
The DJ AM scene was lame lame lame. War Machine's first appearance was written incredibly weakly. The Amalagated villain: poorly acted. "Where's my bird?" Yeah, that was weak. The Briefcase suit fight: let's wrap my arms around his whips and throw him to the ground. That's it?

Yeah that's it. Rant over. Displeased w/ part two.

@neuromonitor I would watch that movie. Don't know if extremis, hulk and 3 villains is too much or just too much winning, but at least it's interesting. That's why I like the comics, they aren't afraid to try something new!

I dont get all this Hulk should be in Iron Man 3. You guys complained when Iron Man 2 was more about SHIELD and the lead up to the Avengers than it was about Tony himself. And now you want to take the spotlight away from Tony again by having the Hulk get screentime in the movie. Make up your mind guys!

I agree completely with soberchimera61, keep their team-ups for the Avengers. Sure have a Bruce cameo, have Tony talking to Bruce on a screen & establish he is working in a random Stark Industries installation somewhere in America, safe from the forces who would be chasing him. But no Hulk appearance

Agreed @ thepowercosmic
