Recent reports have indicated that the budget for John Carter has ballooned towards the $300 million mark, a claim that the director of the movie (Andrew Stanton) recently called, "a complete and utter lie." Talking to the press on Thursday at a junket for the Disney adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs novels, Movieline reports that he was quick to shoot down the claims that a combination of reshoots and production resulted in the increased spending.

Stanton added, "I want to go completely on record that I literally was on budget and on time the entire shoot. Disney is so completely psyched that I stayed on budget and on time that they let me have a longer reshoot because I was such a good citizen, so I find it ironic that we’re getting accused of the opposite." Several reliable sources have recently indicated that the budget is still fairly high for a movie based on a little known property, but with test screenings last year coming back with high approval ratings, fans hoping for a sequel will have to cross their fingers that the poor tracking figures revealed yesterday aren't an indication of its eventual success.

Yes, he said that in the interview with Empire too. He always planned to reshoot from DAY 1. He said that to Disney also. The comments that keeps saying how this was $400M film are [frick]ing ridiculous.

$400 million dollars? That's absolutely insane. It's a science-fiction movie, not a reboot of the creation of the universe.

Fartman: I know. My point exactly. But trust me, a lot of people, for some weird, have been putting this film down just because it has a budget over $200M. It's crazy.

JJ's Trek made over 300 million, so anything can. This movie already looks like it will much more solid than that film.

The first book was great. I have yet to read any more. But I got Books Two and Three. Going to try and start reading them soon. :)

I think this movie looks great. Very scifi/fantasy.

Oh, and some comments I've read (not here, other places) about this looking like an Avatar/Star Wars rip off crack me up... Lucas himself has said he took inspiration from John Carter/Flash Gordon. Research, kids! :P

This film will Easily make over $300 million both domestic and definately world wide so they have nothing to worry about and I doubt the Budget is $300 million, maybe with marketing attached but definately not production.

@pintoman - Just for the record, JJ's Star Trek was popular only in America and didn't make $300 million, it made a mere 257 million. It picked up a puny $127 million internationally to make its world wide figure $385. John Carter will probably do over $600 million world wide easily.

@coolant10 - Avengers was RUMOURED to have a $300 million budget, it's actual budget is $225 million and that figure has been hyped to $260 on some reports. Either way its not substantially higher than the budget for Iron Man 2 that was $200 million. They know its Box Office receipts based on the figure made by the most successful of the character based films (Iron Man 2) which had the biggest international take at $311 million and by far the biggest international gross at $624 million.

I know fanboys are thinking the movie will make a billion but in all honesty it stands to do around $700-800 million at most world wide. On a $225 million budget, that's gonna be pretty decent.

And I can't wait to see John Carter on the big screen, out of all the movies previewed this year, that flick definitely has the "must see on the big screen" visual spectacle about it, so expect a huge cinema draw.

Maybe, just maybe, if this is a huge success we can move onto a proper adaptation of ERB's Tarzan.
