BOX OFFICE: JOHN CARTER Limps To #3 Spot; Will International Receipts Save It?

Despite a stronger opening than originally expected, John Carter has had a disappointing second weekend at the box office. Not helped by the impressive debut of 21 Jump Street, the Disney film has slipped to the #3 spot with a measly $13.5M for the weekend. That's a drop of 55% reports Deadline in their analysis of the weekend's takings. The only thing that can now save the Andrew Stanton helmed film (based on the century old novels by Edgar Rice Borroughs) are international receipts. The past week has seen John Carter make $40.7M internationally for a worldwide cume of $179.3M. It's expected to finish at around the $80M mark stateside and it will have to perform exceptionally well over the next few weeks to be anything other than a $100M - $150M write off for the studio. With The Hunger Games and Wrath of the Titans on the way, it may struggle to ever reach profitability.

maybe part of the bad numbers are the bad press the internet has given to this movie.

of course the general audience cant be excited for ALL the sci-fi movies, but at the same time many sites didnt stop talking about "the problems" the producion had and all of that... when none of us really know what happens in the behind the scenes of every studio.

@ gambgel - Agree, bad marketing and negative press ruined it. If you watch the rating on imdb it is 7.1 which is very good. That's higher than Thor, CA, and TIH, and those movies made a lot of money and were liked a lot..

I liked it as well. Seemed to be a mix of the first two books with some new stuff not from the books. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

The movie is doing very well on international seas, the problem seems to be on USA (US$ 126 million against US$ 53 million, according to The Box Office Mojo) - don't ask me why!!!

That reminds me of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, that made US$ 240 million domesticaly and US$ 800 million out of the States.

I loved the movie and I just saw it two times. My hope is it will be a trilogy - for the least.

GO TO THE MOVIES!!!

why the heck arent people seeing this movie its a 200$ MILLION DOLLAR movie. people say im an idiot for loving expensive movies (yes i loved conan and cowboys and aliens) but these movies are incredible!!!

i went on saturday morning with my kids,and we had the cinema to ourselves.
I really enjoyed the whole thing,and immersed myself in it 100%
my kids only stopped watching at the romantic moments but they also enjoyed it immensely
I am looking forward to seeing it again at home when it comes out on disc.

I need to add,i went to the normal screening and not the 3d version,A couple of bad 3d experiences has put me off taking a risk.

I also reckon there was a it of negative publicity in the month prior to release and not great reviews.

i just wish you didnt have to spend a good $15-20 just to see a movie. if they would lower the prices people would go a whole lot more than they do now. many times i can't ever go with friends because they say they dont want to "waste" all their money

That's too bad, I thought it was great. Will be buying it on Blu-ray. I guess all of the negative press helped to kill it. Negativity seems to be very popular these days. Negativity needs to be SMASHED!

Good example of a movie that was trashed by people who never saw it. Especially, folks on this site. The hand wringing and whining about how it made less than $30 million on opening when it actually DID make that much. Really unfair. I saw it. Big, bold adventure. I think that Stanton has an eye for action and drama.

Why the hell do people listen to critics? It's people who have nothIng in common with most of us, giving us their opinion. Who cares what they think. Go see it for yourself. I did and once again saw a great movie where it should be seen. If I listened to critics I would have missed out on many great films, like "John Carter".

Underworld Awakenings trailer was better than its movie.
John Carter movie was better than any of its trailers.

I seem to be the one here who didn't think John Carter was very good. I saw it with several friends and we all pretty much thought it was an absolute mess.

But regardless of the quality of the movie, I agree that the main reason nobody saw it was probably due to the terrible job marketing it. I mean seriously, how do you not capitalize on the fact that it was written by the guy who did Tarzan?

watched it last saturday, its good movie and better than I expected

lynn collins is pretty hot and gambit is good in it and nice twist ending
what makes this movie failed is bad marketing, the trailer not interesting and if I dont visit this site I wont know this movie and maybe I wont watch it

and title is very odd for movie like this, its not like james bond or sherlock holmes how many people in this world know john carer anyway? it makes people who dont know not interested to watch it

My wife and I saw it on Saturday. As someone who was really looking forward to this movie, and recently started reading the books, I'd say it was a really good movie.

It felt like something was a little off at the beginning of the movie but it definitely got better as it went along, and the ending was fantastic.

It was great to see Carter, Dejah Thoris, Tars Tarkas, Kantos Kan, Sola and Woola brought to life on the big screen.

If you were thinking about seeing this, please do. It's worth the price of admission.

I saw John Carter last week and absolutely loved it. Since that time, I've been telling anyone who will listen to go see it.

What killed its box office was bad marketing. Not being familiar with the books (except for what I've heard about them through friends), I really had no idea of what the movie was about. You watch the ads, it looks a lot like Wrath of the Titans or an Avatar ripoff. A better job of representing what the basic story is would have probably drawn more people to see the movie. I could also see the movie's title as a problem for it. A lot of people have no idea who John Carter is.

I just saw it this weekend and I thought it was good but I don't think Disney is gonna profit from this film at all. $350 million is a lot of money to try and get back

I mean, I didn't hate the movie, I thought it was okay. But it just seemed like they threw a bunch of elements from the books into a blender and threw it up on the screen. It was kind of all over the place; my one buddy kept saying how nobody did anything for any discernible reason.

Granted, that's kind of how the books are (or at least the first two, those are the only ones I've read), but I just didn't think they did a good job adapting it. I'd say the 50% on RT is about right.

Also, @JackBauer, your wife is certifiably awesome.
