Jodie Foster Believes The Superhero Genre Is Ruining Movies As Studios Make "Bad Content" For The "Masses"

In a new interview, Jodie Foster has made it clear that she's not a fan of superhero movies and appears to blame them for ruining the moviegoing experience as a whole. In fact, she holds a certain level of disdain for all things blockbuster and compares releases like that to how companies recover gas and old from shale rock. If that seems like something of an extreme comparison, it's probably because it is!

"Going to the movies has become like a theme park," the actress turned filmmaker explains. "Studios making bad content in order to appeal to the masses and shareholders is like fracking – you get the best return right now but you wreck the earth." Foster went on to take aim a specific genre which is particularly popular right now. "It’s ruining the viewing habits of the American population and then ultimately the rest of the world. I don’t want to make $200 million movies about superheroes."

Bizarrely, despite those comments, Foster went on to say that she would actually consider making a superhero movie but only if it was one with, "really complex psychology." So, in other words, she hates seeing these movies take over Hollywood but would make one if it had the right story (and presumably if the money on offer was high enough). What do you guys think of these remarks?

@RoninHawkeye - she's one to talk, she's had and made her fair share of bad movies.

@RoninHawkeye - People like Jodie Foster need to stfu and accept times are changing. Netflix & Amazon have evolved into the experimental and indie category for new films with story. Just look at the success of Narcos, Strangers things, man in the high castle, sneaky pete, Daredevil, and orange is the new black.

The problem is filmmakers like Ridley Scott and Mel Gibson aren't getting the budget for their little projects because the theater business is expensive to run as is. So why give $65 million for a film about a mayan running through a jungle?

People want superhero films and nostalgia based films at the moment. While people want good and compelling stories at home on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon.

@RoninHawkeye - meh, it’s to be expected. The more fans you have, the more detractors you have as well. All this complaining from industry insiders reeks of sour grapes. The CBM is dominant for now; they should get used to it.

@RocknRolla - What she and others of her ilk are ignoring is the fact that po-faced indie Oscar-bait movies outnumber superhero films by a good margin, but their creators aren't interested in engaging a wider audience beyond critic and awards voters. She can complain as much as she likes about a certain genre supposedly ruining people's viewing habits but the fact is that higher quality dramas are available on TV now. With the high cost of movie tickets, most folks aren't inclined to go out to see fare that really doesn't need the big screen treatment. Honestly, many indie films would be better off being released on streaming platforms, and this is what's happening more often now. People go to the theatre for cinematic experiences they can't get at home, which action movies provide.

Take it to WB & DC.
They are ones who's making bad content in order to appeal to the masses and shareholders.

Marvel's doing just fine with No Rotten Movies
