JUSTICE LEAGUE Star Ben Affleck Says Matt Damon Influenced His Decision To Stop Playing Batman

We've heard quite a bit from Ben Affleck about choosing to leave the role of Batman behind him recently, and the actor has now revealed that long-time friend Matt Damon influenced his decision.

Ben Affleck is set to reprise the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman for an appearance in The Flash, but the actor recently confirmed that this will definitely be his final time suiting-up as the Dark Knight. The Tender Bar star hung up the cape and cowl shortly after the release of Justice League, and has now revealed that Matt Damon was influential in his decision to step away from the character.

Affleck elaborated on his negative experience filming Justice League while being interviewed by Damon for an EW piece, and reminded his Good Will Hunting co-star and long-time friend that speaking to him ultimately helped inform his decision to move on to other projects.

"I didn't like being there. I didn't think it was interesting. And then some really shitty things, awful things happened. But, that's when I was like, I'm not going to do that anymore."

"In fact, I talked to you about it and you were a principal influence on that decision," Affleck continued. "I want to do the things that would bring me joy. Then we went and did Last Duel and I had fun every day on this movie. I wasn't the star, I wasn't likable. I was a villain. I wasn't all the things I thought I was supposed to be when I started out and yet it was a wonderful experience. And it was all just stuff that came along that I wasn't chasing."

The Last Duel did not do very well at the box office, but did perform a lot better on streaming, and Affleck believes smaller, lower budget films may not have a very bright future when it comes to theatrical runs.

"I think movies in theaters are going to become more expensive, event-ized," he added. "They're mostly going to be for younger people, and mostly about 'Hey, I'm so into the Marvel Universe, I can't wait to see what happens next.' And there'll be 40 movies a year theatrically, probably, all IP, sequel, animated."

Affleck has previously stated that IP films no longer interest him, and these latest comments only further hammer home his desire to leave the world of big, blockbuster movies behind. So, don't expect him to show up in the MCU anytime soon!

I didn't have a problem with him as Batman,I just hated Joss Wheddons cut of Justice League.

@marvel72 - I liked his Batman/Bruce, a lot actually.

Too bad BvS and JL films had really bad writing. I think he'd shine if he had someone who really understood Batman at the helm.

@Fogs - But it was Affleck's guy, Chris Terrio, who did a lot of that bad writing.

Here’s the thing: I like Ben Affleck’s Batman. He delivered a strong performance in some poorly directed movies. But the guy is a full-on dumpster fire IRL. The only times I ever hear from the guy is when he’s blaming Jennifer Garner for his alcoholism, blaming Batman for his rehab stints, and holding Jennifer Lopez’s purse on TMZ.

@santoanderson - did he blame Garner for his alcoholism? That's messed up

@Gizmoduck - He did in an interview with Howard Stern, and then he walked it back a couple days later.

@Gizmoduck - Not quite, but almost. He publicly said something that should've been said in private, and of course it came out wrong. Basically that he felt trapped into his marriage and unhappy and thus he ended up falling back into alcoholism. So not exactly "blaming" Garner specifically for it and more stating a shitty state of mind, but still not cool to vent it out in public.

@santoanderson - he said that was out of context and I never blame Jennifer Garner.

@santoanderson - I dont think he is a bad guy, but his personal life is a mess, and media dont let him even breath without putting a camera up his ass...has been this way for over 20 years, since the "Benifer" days

@santoanderson -

I listened to the WHOLE interview. I get what Ben was saying (albeit very clumsily)--he wasn't blaming Jennifer.

Howard addressed the "controversy" himself, saying that Affleck's words were being twisted out of context.

Shame, wish he had more fun because I personally enjoyed his take on both Bruce and the Batman. I felt like we were going to get some more quality batman films - still probably will, but unfortunately not with Ben.

I just hope they can right the ship in a good direction and make the current lineup less of a mess.

But does he blame millennials and their phones for The Last Duel bombing…

@BlackBeltJones - I blame its narrative structure for it not being as engaging as it could be.

Its not my attention span, since I recently made it through movies like The Green Mile and Schindlers List with ease.

@bkmeijer - The marketing was ass. Older (and younger) audiences simply had more appealing options at the time of release and looking for something not as morose as TLD. Given pandemic woes.

I also think given the current climate people didn’t want to endure a BRUTAL and DISTURBING rape scene (and it was hard to watch, my gf’s friend closed her eyes during it).

All in all, it was a big budget R-rated period drama with tough subject matter to sit though, during a pandemic that was dropped with little marketing in the the middle of a hugely competitive month.

@BlackBeltJones - completely forgot about the scene. Probably because I looked away too.

But yeah, marketing and release date really didn't do it any favors. It was probably Disney+ 45 window policy I cared for it enough to watch it so soon.

@BlackBeltJones - I blame the premise of the movie. I loved the movie don’t get me wrong. But it is DARK, heavy and graphic. Hell promoting a film where the central conflict revolves around rape (that is shown mind you) sounds like a nightmare to market.

Glad I was able to watch it in the comfort of my home with the option of taking as much time I need to watch and process scenes and skipping that particular one.

I have no idea wtf Ridley Scott was talking about with that statement.
