JUSTICE LEAGUE Actor Ben Affleck Says "IP Movies" No Longer Interest Him

Ben Affleck is set to reprise the role of Batman for The Flash, but based on the actor's comments in a recent interview, it sounds like this will be the last time we see him in the cape and cowl.

After making three appearances as Batman in The DCEU, Ben Affleck decided to hang up the cape and cowl following what he describes as a "difficult" time working on Justice League. Though the actor did return to shoot additional scenes for the "Snyder Cut," it was generally assumed that this would be the last time we'd see him suited-up as The Dark Knight.

When the news broke that Affleck would reprise the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman for Andy Muschietti's The Flash, fans of this take on the iconic DC Comics vigilante were understandably very excited, and speculation began to mount that he might stay on as the character moving forward. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like Affleck has any interest in continuing his journey as the Caped Crusader.

While chatting to The Playlist about his new film The Tender Bar, Affleck was asked about the box office performance of The Last Duel and the current state of the film industry in general. Though he never mentions Batman or superhero movies, specifically, his comments certainly suggest that he's done with big franchise roles for the time being.

"I don’t want to do IP movies, where you have this sort of built-in audience. That’s something I was interested in and liked, and I just don’t like anymore. I like other people who do it. And if you are going to do it, you should love it. And I love something different. So, I want to do that."

Affleck said he had a "lot of fun" working on The Flash in a previous interview, so if the upcoming movie really is to be his Batman swansong, we're glad it was a positive experience.

What is IP?

@LordMushu - Intellectual Property. Basically it's a fancy short way of saying "a thing to sell".

I guess I should clarify more than "a thing to sell". Intellectual property is a category of property that includes intangible creations of the human intellect. There are many types of intellectual property, and some countries recognize more than others. The most well-known types are copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. In this case, film franchises.

@BlackBeltJones - It's funny because Snyder and his DCEU movies are directly responsible for Affleck's current mindset

@BlackBeltJones - And there's another cult who's hell bent to keep doing this...

Totally understand him. Before we even gotten a single picture of him as Batman he got shit at, and afterwards the only the question he got was about his Batman solo project. Can understand that leads to a feeling of feeling trapped. Rather just see him do stuff like Argo, Triple Frontier, The Town and flicks like that.

As for Batman specifically, the more I think about it the less I would've mind a Gotham Knights project in the movies (anything but that on CW really).

Big love to Benevolent Affluence. Love the man, dearly.

His Baman performance was dope. In BvS. Terrible shame there was zero thought put into any kind of strategy or storytelling for that universe. Could've worked with gentler hands and a more thoughtful approach.

But still, big love and respect. Dude is dope.

How sad is it that WB killed this man’s love for Batman.

He's gonna do indie movies for 5 or 6 years, until the inevitable Batman Beyond: Into the Bat-Verse, where Bale, Keaton, him and Robert team up to stop all their past villains. And Dr Fate is in there somewhere.

Well can’t say I blame him for not wanting to be scrutinized and blamed for a poor reception of a character who he is playing in a movie he didn’t write. WB ruined/sabotaged his and Snyder’s take on Batman, BvS wasn’t a great movie but Affleck was probably the best part of the movie then WB and Whedon turned him into a punchline in JL. I’m sure the psychological part of acting and working hard as DareDevil and Batman took a toll on his confidence from acting in big budget comic book movies. Expectations are hard to meet if you don’t have the right team working with you.

I really thought he did "Old Man Batman" well. It's a shame we won't see him in the role anymore because he was REALLY good in it. But I totally understand why he's moved on. Don't blame the guy at all.

Oooh I have such conflicting thoughts on this dude. On the one hand, he co-wrote two of the best films I’ve seen, Good Will Hunting and the Last Duel. And he was insanely young when he helped write the first which is incredible. On the other hand they’re the only two movies he’s been any good in except Argo, as well. Then there’s his interview with Sam Harris where he acted like an absolute dickhead and didn’t have a clue what he was talking about (he accused Harris of being gross and racist for expressing his views that Islam the religion is extremely dangerous, and Harris is an anti religion spokesperson who thinks this of all religions. Affleck just couldn’t weap his head around the fact that claiming a religion is dangerous or bad doesn’t mean all the people who follow it are. He sounded like a moron and an aggressive one at that). I can’t reconcile someone who wrote such a smart movie being so seemingly stupid.

I wanna like him. I almost do.

@TheWalkingCuban - What are people talking about when they talk about Christianity? The religion as taught in the New Testament or what humans have done on their own?

@rkshuttleworth -

Precisely. You can’t find a single hateful thing in what Jesus proclaimed.

Muhammad and other “prophet” however...not so much.

@rkshuttleworth - Supposed believers have twisted God’s word for millennia, nevertheless, the plain things in scripture and it’s true adherents are hated just as much as the supposed Christians.

Well that's a shame. Probably the biggest casualty from WB's mishandling of JL is driving him away and losing out on more of his Batman. An absolute travesty.

So essentially Ben is no longer going to be in big franchise movies we all know and like? That is a bummer... dude seriously got burned by Synder's b/s...

And in hindsight, this could've easily been his response to turning down Batman, in the first place.😂 It's interesting that Snyder's Dark Knight Returns pitch, convinced Affleck to take the role.
