EDITORIAL: Why KICK-ASS 2 Is the Most Underrated Comic Book Movie of the Year

I personally think Kick-Ass 2 is extremely underrated, so after reading the Man of Steel article by yonny616, I decided to make an article of my own. Hit the jump to see why it's not as bad as most people seem to think.

Kick-Ass 2 has received a lot of hate since it was released and lately I've been meaning to write an article about why I think it is underrated. After reading yonny616's article on why he thinks Man of Steel is underrated, I decided that the time has come for me to do so.

Here I will share some common complaints people have and will explain why they don't bother me.

Complaint 1. Katie's character:
A lot of people had a problem with this scene, saying that it was handled very poorly. Katie sees Dave talking to Mindy and assumes that they had something going on. This pisses Katie off and breaks up with Dave, never to be seen again. I myself thought this was handled poorly at first, although it never bothered me too much.

Why it didn't bother me:
Like I said, it didn't bother me too much. I realize that this scene was made to get the Dave and Katie relationship out of the way and give space for the Dave and Mindy relationship. And if you really want to look in depth, these movies are supposed to be grounded in real life, with realistic characters, and if your girlfriend witnessed the same conversation between Mindy and Dave, she would probably act the same way.

Complaint 2. Mindy and the Sick Stick:
Another complaint people have is the Sick Stick scene. When Mindy goes to get her revenge on the mean girls, she uses the "Sick Stick", which makes them vomit and crap all over the place. People complain that it's too cartoony for a movie like this.

Why it didn't bother me:
I also had a problem with this scene like a lot of other people, but I quickly got used to it. I realized that this is the kind of thing Hit Girl would do. And although it could have been done better, I am fine with what they did, and how it shows Hit Girl's craziness as a character.

Complaint 3. Lazy Script:
After the first one, a lot of people thought this movie was weak in comparison, mainly because of the script. People say that a lot of the scenes, especially the dramatic scenes, weren't handled very well. Now this is the complaint that I didn't quite understand.

Why it didn't bother me:
I actually enjoyed this script quite a bit. I thought the dialogue was pretty good and most of the things the characters dealt with throughout the film were necessary for a sequel like this, like Dave's dad's death for example. In the first movie Dave said that he really had no other reason to be a superhero other than because he wanted to. When his dad dies, Dave contemplates if this world is really meant to have superheroes, and in the end decides that because his dad died, he has a reason to be a hero. I know all these things happened in the comics, but I think Jeff Wadlow did a great job at translating them to the big screen.

Complaint 4. Union J:
This complaint is probably the most common. People say that this scene where the girls watch the boy band video was there for product placement and had no place in the film. This is the only big complaint that I agree with. It really didn't do much for me. I've gotten used to it after watching it several times, but I really don't think it was necessary.

There are also a lot of things great about this movie that I think a lot of people overlooked.

1. The Score:
Like the first one, I think the score for this movie was phenominal. Matthew Margeson and Henry Jackman made a score that is powerful and effective, both borrowing from the first film and conducting their own Bad
-Ass tunes. It's something I listen to almost everyday.

2. The Action Scenes:
Now I'm not a huge fan of shaky cam action, but it didn't bother me here and I think it was used well. It gave the movie a more grounded feel than the first one which is what these movies really have going for them. I think Jeff Wadlow did a great job with these action scenes, especially the fight between Justice Forever and the gangsters near the middle of the film.

3. Pure Entertainment value:
Now this movie is not as good as the first one, it is definitely flawed, but to me it still entertaining as hell, and maybe even more entertaining than the first. To me it's a lot easier to get through, even though the first is also easy to get through, and is a lot more fast paced. If nothing else, this movie is a great time.

So these are my thoughts on Kick-Ass 2. I thought it was extremely underrated and doesn't get enough credit. I'm sure some of you have more things to add, good or bad, so be sure to leave comments below.

Now that I've said that, I'll read your article.

I enjoyed quite a lot to. I really is very underated not only because of the great character development, awesome characters and moves fast while keeping momento but also because it's the first time that we'll ever see some of this stuff. A team of villains fighting against a team of heroes. That amount of unique costumes (except for ass-kicker) are a many years away of being seen again.

Nice article. I totally agree, Kick Ass 2 was great. MoS was better, but Kick Ass was a close 2nd. Both were better than the Wolverine, IM3 and especially Thor...

Loved a KICK-ASS 2!!!

Wonder if Kick-Ass is going to name himself "Big Daddy Kick-Ass" there's only one more left and Miller said it isn't going to end happily ever after. That last scene in the movie was such a cool cliff hanger! Can't wait for Kick-Ass 3!!! Just haven't decided if I should read the comic for 3 yet?

PS. Mother Russia was a beast!!

I also forgot to point out how great Christopher Mintz-Plasse was as the villian, and how hard he tried at being a bad ass and failing miserably.

@DukeNukem

I agree strongly with your claim. The same is going on for "47 Ronin" everyone I know who's seen it has loved it. RT is full of hipsters who don't appreciate different takes on things. I can agree with some of their reviews but a majority if them are just stuck up people who degrade films for the littlest things. lol

That's why I always say to people "go see the film for yourself and you be the judge" when you read the reviews of other parties to an extent you become brainwashed into what they expect out of your films rather than the message you solemnly set to place within your film.

I'll say this before I leave, when The Wolverine reviews hit this site before it was released in theaters everywhere so many people read the review in which one viewer disliked the 3rd act, so everyone went into the theater claiming that the 3rd act was bland and horrible. If people never pay these reviews any attention before they go see films they want to see I'm sure the experience would be more thrilling.

I enjoyed Kickass 2... that being said I don't think its the most underrated. On here that seems to go to Iron Man 3. I mean it is often called the worst CBM ever and got worst CBM of 2013 where I think it was a good but not great film. Most over rated on here seems to be Man Of Steal as it somehow took best CBM of the year while taking second for Worst CBM of the year.

Vaughn leaving was noticeable in the 2nd film but I loved it still, I have watched it 3 times now and it's quality. Very rarely do sequels even get helmed by the same team that did the original so you always have some "new" vision that rubs fans of an original the wrong way. That said, they are both quality films and the 3rd would benefit from a much darker tone, wrap up the sequel right and let Vaughn do so, and hurry before Chloe is 18/19 playing a "little" girl

Oh my dear God! How has bitchy behavior like this and sloppy writing become accepted into public norm?

GhostBoy
GhostBoy - 1/3/2014, 3:36 AM
Outside of that, shitty article. Your only argument is that because you enjoyed watching a movie, that everyone else must be wrong. And that is a horrible argument! Let me just explain a couple of things.

Katie's character
In no way should her behavior/writing have been considered acceptable. It completely undermines her growth from the first movie. And to add insult to injury it doesn't even give her and Dave an intimate and emotional scene. It is a throwaway fifteen seconds of the movie, and the real reason it is in the movie is so that Dave can f*ck Night-Bitch without anyone hating Dave.

Lazy Script
There is absolutely no excusing this. You site the death of Dave's dad as good screenwriting and "necessary," but it is not necessary. The truth is, it is only in there because they forced it to be because otherwise it wouldn't be a "kickass" movie. Absolutely nothing would have changed had Dave's father not died. It is in the end, irrelevant. You say that his death is what gives Dave reason to be a super hero, but this is a lie. It is a false arc. The topic was already handled in the first film and this shit doesn't need to be covered in the sequel. More importantly, this reasoning, that the death of one's father gives someone the right to be a vigilante, it doesn't work. You know why because it is the exact same reason The Mother-F*cker is a super villain. And you might think to compare Dave to Bruce Wayne because of the death of his parents, but this doesn't work either. Bruce Wayne became Batman not because of his parents' untimely deaths, but because he was angered and sickened by the criminal underbelly of the city of Gotham which caused it.

Union J
Literally, up until this point, I thought they were a fictional band that was created for the movie. However, if they are real, than this kind of product placement in the movie is the worst [frick]ing offense since a whole scene from iRobot being devoted to Will Smith and his shoes, and in fact it is worse.

I am not going to write much of anything about the sick stick because in truth it is just an awful joke.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed watching Kick-Ass 2 too, but it doesn't mean the movie isn't a shit movie.

I love "Kick-Ass 2". More Chloe in the plot (she is second MAIN character now!!!), more superheroes, more supervillains, masks, costumes. I love training scenes and their humour, like action sequences (especially "Chloe on the car" and "Glass fight with Mother Russia"!). There was all R-rated amenities: Boobs and Gore (the fisrt one have no nudity, f@king Lindsey close her breast!! arrrhg!...). Even there is SCENE AFTER THE CREDITS! Main modern thing in comic books, soooo love it!!!

And Alternate Opening from the dvd is so much better than the theatrical one, it's so awesome!

And I am very happy, that they not use child-killing scene at all from original comic book. Wadlow is great and awesome, "Kick-Ass 2" is one of the best movies of 2013. Really R-rated entertainment superhero comedy with awesome Chloe Moretz!

I feel bad that this movie was not well supported i the box office compared to other superhero movies considering for a superhero movie led by characters which actually does not have superpowers ... the cast and crew did one hell of a job making the movie very interesting and entertaining compared to The Dark Knight Rises which in my opinion is so overrated :P
ManDeth

Much of the film just didn't work. For starts there was no villain just a running gag with Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Even in a comedic film like this, you have to have a bad guy.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Kick-Ass wasn't a clear protagonist. Much like Anakin in Ep 1+2. Kick-Ass was more of a bystander with no purpose. He just walked around watching people until someone messed with him. And he wasn't even aware he was MFs target unto the film was half over.
Chloë Grace Moretz/Hit Girl had more of a plot and focus and was the one thing done right in the whole film. In fact, if the film had been about her and called Hit Girl and had less of Kick-Ass and no MF, it might've worked.

I don't like Carrey but if ever there was a time to change a comics story in the adaption it was this film.
Jim Carrey/Colonel Stars and Stripes seemed to work. And despite the comic, the role should've been greatly expanded. I might've even had The Colonel be a former ally of Big Daddy or even an apprentice.

Kick-Ass 2 needed a rewrite and it needed restructured.

Let this be a lesson to guys complaining about films changing comic stories. A comic book writer is not necessarily qualified to write a movie. Every thing that did not work in this film was directly lifted from the comic, with disastrous results!

Yes it's the most underrated film from last year, in my account it's Third behind The Hobbit (No 2) and MoS (Numero 1).
The rest of the list goes
4. T-tdw
5. The Wolverine.
Thats my top 5

@TheDemonsHead Right now it looks bad for a 3rd film. I'd say it would be a direct to DVD/Bluray with a whole new, cheaper cast.
