There was a mixed reaction(thats putting it mildly) when it was announced that Cloverfield director Matt Reeves would be remaking the movie for American audiences and inexplicably retitling it at the same time. But since that, he has assembled a very impressive cast which includes Moretz, The Road's Kodi Smit Mcphee, Richard Jenkins and Elias Koteas. He has also addressed the concerns from the fans of the original and promised that his movie would not be just a straight remake made more palatable for U.S movie goers, but a fresh take on the original's source novel.
Of course, no trailer has been released as of yet to give us an idea if he's on the level or not, but Chloe Moretz put her 2 cents in at Wondercon on Saturday...
"It's definitely a lot like the original, but Matt Reeves, Kodi Smit-McPhee and I, we definitely brought our own aspect to it. I hope you guys like it."
"It was really cool," Moretz said of playing Abby(previously Ellie).
"It was fun portraying a vampire. The face of a vampire that people don't really see. You know? It's the side of a vampire that's usually hidden. They don't show it. It's always this cold figure that people always draw themselves to for no apparent reason. And this girl that I play is much darker. She's dirty. She doesn't really bathe that much. She's not glamorous. She's just a girl that no one could care less about."
Moretz, still just 13, has not seen the original all the way through..
"I wasn't allowed to see the whole thing," she said.
The fact that they are keeping Abby grimy and unwashed is a good sign. I really though we might be getting
Twilight for tweens with this one. Although,... MAJOR SPOILER FROM THE NOVEL....from her comments she seems to have played Abby as a girl, and anyone that has read the book or seen the original movie(to a lesser extent..its only hinted at) knows, Abby is not a girl at all!. Anyway, she may of course just keeping everything as hush hush as possible, but even if they lose the gender ambiguity, I'm still liking the sounds of this particular remake..so far!
