EDITORIAL: Why Mysterio Is The Perfect Villain For SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME

As we all know, Mysterio is reportedly going to be the next big bad for Spidey in his 2019 sequel. What should we expect from the ol' fishbowl head? Let's see...

When you think of your favorite Spider-Man villain... who comes to mind? Some would say the Green Goblin. Others would say Venom. Personally, I'm an Electro fan, but that's not what we're here to talk about. The topic of this whole thing is the Master of Illusion himself - Mysterio.

He's supposedly going to be in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and potentially be played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Sounds interesting, right? Well, if you're not excited from those factors alone, let's dig a little deeper into this.

Mysterio is one of the original Sinister Six members in the comics. He's not one of Spidey's biggest villains, but he's definitely up there. Otherwise known as Quentin Beck, Mysterio was a special effects/stuntman who dreamed of having the spotlight. So in order to get what he wants, he makes himself a suit filled with tricks and traps and becomes a supervillain. That's basically his origin story in a nutshell, for those who didn't know.

However, even though it doesn't seem like much, there's a lot you could build off for a film.

Unlike some of Spider-Man's other villains, Mysterio doesn't have a huge urge to kill the webhead. The only thing that matters to him is putting on a show and gaining attention. If Spider-Man gets in the way, then someone's going to get hurt. So translating a motivation like that into the next Spider-Man movie would be unique. We haven't quite seen someone of Mysterio's tactics in the MCU other than Loki.

Visually, seeing Spidey go up against Mysterio could be mind-blowing. He's not just fighting a guy physically. He's fighting someone mentally.

Mysterio is all about making you confused. He'll leave you in a thought process on if that missile coming towards you is real or not. If it's fake, then he's probably already escaped by then. If it's real, then you're in some major trouble. Sure, Mysterio will use physical attacks like robots and lasers. However, it's his ultra real holograms and hallucinogens that steal the show.

A young, naive Spider-Man, like the one we're seeing now, would be complete lunch meat for someone of Mysterio's skills. That way, in order for Spider-Man to beat him, he has to use his brawn and brains. Nonetheless, prepare for some incredible fight scenes.

You could give Mysterio a beautiful balance of scariness and comedy. Sometimes he can be a walking horror act, and sometimes he can be nothing but laughs. As long as they balance it right, I think we're in for a great adversary for Spider-Man.

Overall, Marvel has made a solid choice choosing the Master of Illusion for their next Spidey villain. Not much is known about the movie, other than the fact that Peter Parker will be traveling to Europe for a summer trip. Regardless, on July 5th 2019, I think we're in for a treat.

I hope Marvel doesn't go with a design like the one above (or any of the "realistic" designs people have been throwing around.) Mysterio is intentionally ridiculous looking; if you're not gonna go all in with him, then you shouldn't be using him at all. Gimme dat fishbowl, gimme dem eye-shaped cape clips, gimme dat green body-suit.

I love the idea of him putting on a show. I think of him as a villainous version of the characters in Now You See Me (don't judge me). This role would lead to some marvelous banter. It's the over-the-top flair that gets me excited.

Pretty much agree with everything being said here. I feel that you need to embrace the campy silliness that is Mysterio or GTFO. I'm also interested to see how they prop him as a main antagonist, as he's never exactly had the most depth of the Spider-Man rogues gallery.

I'd maybe you him against another antagonist, maybe a Mephisto or something weird just to balance the books

Great article though man <3
