BOX OFFICE: MEN IN BLACK 3 Tracking Lower Than Expected But Will Beat THE AVENGERS

After a ten year absence from the big screen, the Men in Black are reportedly no longer on course for the predicted $85M - $100M weekend. However, it WILL still take back the box office from Marvel's The Avengers. Read on for details.

While Men in Black 3 will definitely take the #1 spot from Marvel's The Avengers this weekend, Deadline now reports that the threequel opened with $18 million yesterday and is expected to take only $75 million in total for the four day holiday weekend. Analysts had previously predicted a final weekend domestic gross of $85 million - $100 million, but it is currently tracking lower than box office flops John Carter and Battleship in some international territories (according to rival studios that is). With a budget of between $230 million - $300 million, the pressure is on Men in Black 3 to perform well this weekend, especially with Snow White and the Huntsman and Prometheus on the way. It's expected that the positive word of mouth surrounding the film will be a big help (be sure to check out my 4* review of Men in Black 3 by clicking HERE).

However, it's worth noting that this isn't the first time analysts have underestimated the performance of a film at the box office (The Avengers wasn't expected to open anywhere near as well as it eventually did either). The studio also claim some very strong openings overseas, with a $3.5 million first day in Russia - that's bigger than the Marvel Studios superhero ensemble. A Sony exec tells the site, "All around the world, the feeling is there is a big family audience which will be coming out over the weekend. While Western Europe continues to work to overcome some beautiful weather, we have the benefit of a holiday on Monday in various markets which should help boost our Sunday results there. Give us sometime to breathe here and wait for the kids to come out. Today will be good but Sat-Sun-Mon great."

Josh Brolin as Young Agent K

"only $75 million "

LOL

That used to be quite a lot of cash! Most films would be happy with that sort of opening. :)

A shame, it's a great movie! Well, hopefully it will get a lot more money in the coming days. I don't usually pay attention on all these Box Office stuffs, though, so I can't say much. But, go see it, people.

Avengers really did a number on this year's Summer flicks I think. It might get a refresh when Spiderman/Prometheus comes out. Got a weird feeling Batman isn't going to be very action packed as everyone is expecting. More dialogue between Bruce and Selina, Bruce and Alfred... Its the last one, for a while at least, and they are going to probably try and go for drama. Think I'm going to need a David 8 to translate Bane and Batman though.

Prometheus will do well, but its not going to take down Avengers and that is not an "Avengers is the best movie" statement. As great as its going to be, it appears its changing the origin of the Alien, suggesting it is a "re-engineer" of a human. That and there aren't as many Alien backers as comic fans. Ridley Scott is a awesome director and his stories are mind blowing, but his action scenes are...lacking. He goes for "epic" not "spectacular".

@Jimdlux

u do realise comic fans are small. The Avengers success is the general public

I'm fine with that. The Avengers had an amazing run, and beat the dark knight and the phantom menace!

this movie will break no box office records
it is no more than a tv movie at the cinema.
yes it has a slightly clever ending ,but it is just a basic movie
I enjoyed it but will never watch it ever again in my life....

seriously,Judge a movie on whether or not you would watch it again, within a week...

Just to add...my kids dont really care about going to see the avengers again, but mummy would like to go....she does tend to follow the herd, and it is the latest blockbuster,etc...
me...I waited so long to see it and it plucked not one nostalgic heartstring, whereas thor and cap and iron man pushed my geek buttons.

@Boosted: I think his point is that at this same point in the movies' run (after its 21st day, which was Thursday for Avengers), Avatar had $380.5 mil, while Avengers has $476.7 mil. And that's before this big holiday weekend. While Avatar had very strong late legs, Avengers has nearly $100 mil in the bank ALREADY. I don't think it has a shot at Avatar's $749.8 mil DOM, but it should cross $600 mil which will push it past Titanic's $600.8 mil original run (passing Titanic after this year's 3D re-release ($658.5 mil) will be more difficult for the Avengers, but it's not out of the realm of possibility just yet.
